August 26, 2013

When I suggested the idea of doing a Blogcademy in Austin in August Gala and Shauna looked at me like I'd gone totally mad. " You know it will be utterly boiling down there then? It's practically on the Equator!" they replied. "Ahh ya wimps, how hot can it really be?" I responded. Well more fool me because when we stepped off the plane last week and were greeted with 40°C+ temperatures, I'm finally understood what living the sun must feel like.

Bouquets of Balloons on a Brooklyn Rooftop: A Bushwick Fairytale with Rent Patina {Part Three}

The view from Rent Patina's rooftop was incredible. The Manhattan skyline stretched before us looking just as inviting as ever. When ever I arrive in New York, no matter how exhausted I am from the flight, I get a whole new wave of excited energy as soon as I see that view - the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Chrysler Building... what's not to love?

August 14, 2013

After lying flat in front of a fan for about 20 minutes straight, we were cooled down enough to get back on the pavement for the next set in our lookbook shoot with Rent Patina. When owner Michelle Gala, Shauna and I that they'd grabbed a bunch of disco balls called in some rainbow confetti and balloons and found some vintage silver roller skates lurking in their collection I had high expectations for what we'd see... but nothing prepared me for this. This set up is literally my dream come true, I'm sure you can see why!

August 7, 2013

On a hot and humid New York day Gala, Shauna and I headed over (under?) the water to Bushwick to hang out with our friends at Rent Patina. The air was heavy and thick and the heat was stifling but we hopped on the subway with a spring in our step, excited about what they had in store for us. They were shooting their brand new lookbook and we, of course, jumped at the chance to play dress up and get involved.

Lake Life and New Adventures for The Blogcademy, Minneapolis

July 15, 2013

When you're visiting a new city and the first thing your hosts do is invite you to hang out on their pontoon on Lake Minnetonka, you kinda know you're in for a bit of an adventure. I had no preconceptions about Minneapolis before I visited it last month, well actually less than none - I knew absolutely nothing about this mid-western city. I had a rough idea of where it was in the country (after checking a map) but that was pretty much it. I was oblivious to it's lively hip hop scene, it's lake culture and all the deep friend delicacies that are served in almost every restaurant (deep fried pickles and cheese curds are both much more delicious than they sound and cream cheese wontons are definitely oh so wrong but oh so right...)that was pretty much it. Without a doubt, one of the most amazing and satisfying things about running The Blogcademy is meeting so many enthusiastic babes marching to the beat of their own drum and wanting to tell the world about it! Before starting this journey I couldn't have ever imagined just how life-altering this event would be for so many of the girls who attend and just how strong the bonds they form during that weekend really are.

I've been throwing the word ‘whirlwind’ around a lot lately, but goodness these past few weeks have really been one! I've strolled around the streets of Manhattan, danced with a disco ball, made custom lipsticks, got a crazy Japanese glitter manicure, found my perfect wrist candy, had a coughing fit live on the internet, hosted a lunch date with our past students, eaten a tub of popcorn larger than my head, posed on velvet couches on city block corners and got locked on a rooftop... and that was just in the first few days! We did two Blogcademy classes on this trip and I'll be blogging all about the Minneapolis adventures soon, but today it's all about my favourite city in the whole wide world - New Yaaawk!

Goodness, what a rollercoaster The Blogcademy has been already, and today we're about to take another upside-down corkscrew followed by a loop the loop because we're adding even more dates to our 2013 world tour! Your headmistresses are nothing if not diligent, and when we announced the full wack of dates back in March, there were some outcries that we weren't going down to any of the Southern US states... Well, your wish is our command and so we've added an Austin date in August. BRING. IT. ON.

Spending my Birthday at the Los Angeles Blogcademy

May 8, 2013

After a blissful few days in Portland, it was time to hit the road and fly down to Los Angeles for the next stop on The Blogcademy world tour. I'm not gonna lie, I've visited LA once before and didn't really fall in love with it, but I was looking forward to experiencing it with my girls and seeing if my mind could be changed. I mean obviously the weather made it much more bearable, it was a scorching 25 degrees a lot of the time which was rather blissful, especially when hearing that it was snowing heavily at home!

Keep Portland Weird: The Blogcademy Recap

Made U Look Studio

May 1, 2013

After a solo long haul flight, an epic Q&A livestream and a whistle stop tour around Portland's least reputable establishments, I barely had time to catch my breath and it was time for the next leg of The Blogcademy World Tour. Portland is a weird little town, but one I felt an instant affinity with. I loved all the independent stores selling all manner of crazy creations, and the candy-coloured houses and walls obviously made my little heart sing!

Fun With Film & Rainbows

Kat

April 20, 2013

I love old film cameras. There's something so innocently wonderful about having a tangible and imperfect photograph to hold in your hand. In this hyper digital age, I think we've all been so quick to forget that unadulterated joy of taking your rolls of 35mm to the developers and waiting with baited breath to get the prints. They didn't always turn out, but that was weirdly part of the appeal. When you did get that one perfect shot, without previews on the back of the camera or Photoshop wizardry to help, it was utterly magnificent.

The Ace Hotel is… er… Ace!

Kat

April 15, 2013

Booking a hotel as your wedding venue is no longer the number one choice for engaged couples. The bland conference-style rooms, the package deals and the dodgy carpet have fallen out of favour, and somewhere with more personality, where they can really put their own stamp on their day, has taken it's place. In many instances this bad rep is understandable. I've visited more soulless and lacklustre hotel wedding venues charging extortionate rates than I'd care to admit. Luckily these days, brides & grooms seem to be quickly realising that they don't have to go with a traditional wedding venue, and smaller spaces like studios, pubs, restaurants and galleries are getting more of a look in.

It’s getting to be quite the regular occurrence for me when I’m travelling. Every time I return home after some far flung adventure, I start to daydream about the benefits of spending less time online and more time, you know, actually out living my life. I don’t know if it’s the sunshine, spending so much time with friends or all the new experiences, but I always land at Heathrow with a surge of ambition to spend more time away from the artificial glare of my computer screen.
