Polka Dot

Dottie is dottie (!?!) about…erm…dots so that’s exactly the theme she wanted to go for in her wedding! She and JP were married at Christ the King Church in CA followed by a polka dot themed wedding at Elements Venue at the Ice House.

The bride (real name Amanda) wore a gorgeous Mori Lee dress, customised with a polka dot sash (and a polka dot garter!) which matched JP’s tie, made by Elmmies. The polka dot theme continued into the cake, the linens and even the groom’s socks!

“So Dottie loves polka dots to death & that’s how she picked up the nickname Dottie,” Christina, their photographer, told me. “They are a super fun & totally madly in love couple that know how to live life to the fullest!  We LOVE all of their fun faces & big smiles! Not to mention they’re epic style. They are the happiest, nicest couple around. They’re the type of people that can make you laugh until your belly hurts & horchata comes out your nose & ohmygosh, the reception was filled with tons of the best goodies that life has to offer. They spent their honeymoon at the happiest place on earth…but of course, DISNEYLAND!”

“We live in a South Philly row home with a garage that houses our bicycles and Aaron’s home-brewing equipment in lieu of a car,” bride Leigh began. ”We knew as soon as we were engaged that we’d ride our tandem bike, acquired from craigslist a few years back, into our reception entrance. We kept the bike theme going with a tandem bike cake topper, a Ketubah that was designed for us especially by Chris Soria, and hotel gift bags and DIY thank you notes with tandem bike stamps.”

“For the beer part of our wedding theme Aaron brewed 45 gallons of beer in 5 different styles (He is now setting up his own home brewing company called Franklin Heights Brewing). Our centerpieces used various-sized jars which we collected, filled with wheat and barley (the barley was purchased from Barry’s Homebrew Supply in South Philly), and our florist incorporated wheat into our bouquets and corsages. Aaron grows hops in the backyard that went into his boutonniere and was on display at the bar. We had almost no beer left at the rest of the night – a testament to his talents!”

Leigh’s love of polka dots also crept into the wedding theme in terms of their invitations, her Belle Couture dress and a lot of the other 100% DIY paper details which were put together by the couple and their friends and family at their ‘crafting parties.’ The DIY and community effort didn’t end there though, with Leigh’s necklace being a hand-made gift from a friend and the photo booth which was set up by another friend. Some of their talented musician friends performed a couple songs, all of which was captured on video by several other friends and family who volunteered their hand-held video recorders.

Some eagle-eyed and long-term readers may recognise Nicola, who’s ‘Do It Yourself’ wedding I featured way back in May 2009. Nicola decided that she wanted to rock her gorgeous Candy Anthony wedding dress just one more time, so got in touch with photographer Caroline to see what she thought. Luckily, when Caroline heard ‘Candy Anthony, cupcake tattoos and pink Converse trainers’ she was totally up for it and they planned this fun and fashionable shoot.

Caroline also persuaded Nicola to bring a few more outfit changes (does this girl just live in gorgeous 1950′s style dresses or what!?) and they were good to Rock n Roll!

When I read the email that Aaron & Jay send to their photographer when they enquired about her shooting their wedding I was smitten. I wonder why huh?!

“I love your photos and would be thrilled if you could shoot our wedding on July 17th of this year. We are planning a super fun, little bit retro and a little bit country wild and crazy with a whole lot of DIY elements party here in Vancouver. ps. I found you through Rock n Roll Bride (the best wedding blog in the world).”

Yeah…flattery really will get you everywhere. Aaron & Jay’s wedding is also completely stupendously rad …always helps when you want to get your wedding featured on these here pages!

The couple were married outside The Old Hastings Mill Store, which was one of the only buildings in Vancouver to survive the Great Fire of 1886. It is now located near Jericho Beach in Kitsilano.  They were married with a view of the harbour, the boats and the mountains – bliss. For their reception they headed to Cambrian Hall.

The couple’s very first date was at Nikkyo Sushi on Main Street in Vancouver which just happened to be around the corner from their reception venue. So, for some fun wedding day pictures, the couple and their photographer Lisa headed out to have some sushi & beer. The couple also served sushi from Nikkyo Sushi at their reception!

Aaron wore a custom made dress from Dolly Couture and accessories from Farmer’s Daughter on Etsy. To compliment her outfit, her bridesmaids wore polkadot 1950s style dresses and they all had different coloured petticoats underneath. How gorgeous is that?!

I love how many UK weddings I’ve been featuring recently. It’s not just my American friends who have rockin’ weddings anymore. Go team GB!

Gemma & Liam’s super stylish, vintage-inspired wedding took place at the moody and dramatic venue of the 13th century George Vaults, Rochester. Just from seeing Gemma’s incredible Fur Coat No Knickers dress and Irregular Choice shoes I knew their wedding would be a beaut. Enjoy these beautiful images people!
