Gala & Nubby in Paris

It’s not often that I post a non-wedding photo shoot, but when I found out that two of my favourite bloggers Gala Darling & Nubby Twiglet were off to Paris, and that while they were there they were doing a photo shoot with one of my favourite photographers, well I couldn’t help but ask them all if I could blog the photos too.

(note: technically there are some wedding elements in this…Nubby got married in Vegas last September and the white sequin dress was her wedding dress!)

“Gala and I met online after she linked to one of my Parisian Trash the Dress photos shoots that you featured on Rock n Roll Bride,” photographer Juliane Berry told me. “When I heard she and Nubby were coming to Paris, I suggested doing a photo shoot. The shoot was a collaboration between Gala, Nubby and I. My vision for Gala’s photos was vintage with vivid colours.  She liked the idea and brought the most perfect vintage dresses and hats for the shoot.  For Nubby, I visualized a lot of black and white with red.  I even brought along a red beret for her to wear for a few shots.”

Gala continued the story, “Nubby & I had an incredible time in Paris & I think it shows in the pictures! It was Nubby’s first time in Europe, & we really wanted to commemorate the experience with a fantastic set (or two… or three!) of photos.”

“Our aim was to capture our individual styles in a very Parisian setting!  Nubby is very minimalist cyborg, while I am more of a psychedelic lady who lunches, & we wanted some photographic evidence!”

“We shot all over the place: in front of brightly-coloured doors in Le Marais, sprawled on the polka-dot carpet at our hotel (Hotel du Petit Moulin), jumping on our bed (naughty girls!) & in parks of all kinds…”

“We owe Juliane a massive debt of gratitude for taking the day to hang out with us.  We had so much fun, we couldn’t have had a better time.  She is just so chill & up for anything.  We walked around Le Marais, stopping whenever inspiration struck & talking up a storm!  Even better, we absolutely LOVE the pictures. She made us feel so comfortable, which makes shooting so much more fun & the images feel like “us”, as opposed to some weird awkward posed nonsense!”

“Juliane has been emailing me regularly with even more pictures from our day together, & they fill me with so much happiness!  It’s like getting a little treasure every time I check my inbox.  She spoiled us rotten… After our experience, I now want to do a session in every city I visit!  Sure beats your average tourist snaps!”

How awesome huh? I know what I want to do on my next trip to Paris. More photos! (you remember my epic Parisan shoot right?!)

For more photos from the shoot, be sure to hop over to Gala & Nubby‘s blogs.

Photography Friday – From Our Hearts to Our Hands

Those of you that follow me on Twitter, will know that I’ve had a bit of a rough week. Being a work-a-holic wedding blogger is often not so good for your health and (yet again) my body has screamed ‘arrrgh, need to rest’ and I’ve contracted glandular fever or tonsillitis (the doctors have done a blood test to see which one, if either, it is.)

Aaanyway, needless to say I haven’t felt much like taking pretty pictures this week, so instead I though I’d use this edition of Photography Friday to direct you towards a project set up by some of my favourite girls – Emma Case, Anna Hardy, Debs Ivelja and Joanna Brown. The project is called From Our Hearts to Our Hands.

They say, “We are four photographers who have come together to shoot and talk in equal measures! We have big plans for this little group and we hope to build a fantastic network of creative, inspiring photographers who love to shoot from the heart too!”

“Our aim is to create an inspiring, creative, supportive, encouraging, exploring community of artists who come together to share ideas, thoughts, feelings, hopes, fears in a way that makes us all smile and feel proud of our wonderful art.  We will be regularly setting projects where you will be free to join in, submit images, comment, talk, meet and learn from each other in a positive and exciting community.”

“We want you to be completely free with your creativity too!  We found that one of the main reasons why we wanted to come together in the first place was because we weren’t shooting for the hell of it anymore… we were shooting beautiful people, beautiful weddings etc and we were absolutely loving it but at the same time we felt we had even more to give…”

The first task set by the girls is to take a photograph
that says “From our Hearts.” You don’t have to be a professional photographer to be involved, so as soon as I’m feeling better I’m totally getting on board with this and joining in!I can’t wait to see how this group progresses. I have a feeling it’s not only going to be massively successful, but it’s going to be a pretty creative and fun place to hang out too. I’m there!

Katie & Olivia’s Natural Beauty

Today’s first feature actually isn’t wedding-related at all, but I just loved it so much that I had to blog it anyway. Sisters Katie & Olivia’s shoot took place at the home of photographer, and friend of their family, Lee Anne Havens of Flower Child Photography. The idea for the shoot was inspired by the girls’ natural beauty and a desire from Lee Anne to create something unique.

“It took me a long time to decide how and where to do this shoot, and in the end I settled on just doing everything at my home studio and made some crazy “costumes” for them,” explained Lee Anne.

“We played dress-up during the entire shoot. At one point Olivia spotted a basket of hats I made the hats last winter during my knitting craze so we had to use them, of course. (I’ve also made some for a charity drive, see info at the end of the post). Their tutu’s were handmade by me, the tops were purchased second hand for about $5 each and the jewellery is mine. So are the sweaters and plaid tops towards the end of the post – I just kept digging through my closet because I didn’t want the shoot to end!”

“The girls have never modelled before and were absolute naturals. I really didn’t do much posing for the most part, I would just catch them doing their own thing and ask them to hold the poses. The pics were taken using available light, sort of my signature look. This was also my first creative shoot, something to do for myself for once!”

Beautiful You

I have to be honest, when I received an email from Evelyn Eslava asking if I wanted to share a photo shoot featuring vintage dresses and horses I wasn’t immediately blown away…I’m not the outdoors type should we say! But when she sent the images through yesterday, boy was I proven wrong? I am in love!

Pomegranates

I fancied starting off the week with a bit of non-wedding gorgeousness. I’m sure you’ll forgive me when you lay your eyes on these little beauties. Pomegranates, a gorgeous orchard, a stunning model, a cute doggie and a generally retro feel make these worth the deviation.
