Modern Marie Antoinette

Simone & Matt were married at the Historic Mission in San Diego.  Simone wore a Monique Lhuillier dress from and Christian Louboutin shoes.  After the ceremony all the guests headed over to the Prado restaurant at Balboa Park for an outdoor cocktail hour with hors d’ourves and live jazz.  Before entering the ballroom the couple entertained the guests with giant Bride and Groom pinatas which were attacked by kids and grownups alike.  There was no formal sit down dinner.  Instead guests were welcome to use the sushi bar and the mini kobe burger and fries bar.  Big band jazz and vocals entertained.  Later in the evening the band packed up and a DJ took over while a separate room was opened up with a taco bar and a ‘Tostitoes’ bar.

Old Hollywood, Mexican Punk Rock!

Summer & Christopher’s wedding took place in July in a cemetery/mausoleum where the bride’s mother works at their beautiful 1920′s era chapel – certainly made for some awesome shots huh!? Summer told me:
It didn’t bother us that the chapel had a mausoleum inside of it.  It’s not that we were being purposely macabre, but we both have an understanding of the cycle of life, and felt that it would be beautiful, appropriate, and romantic, to have our wedding in a place which encompassed beauty and history.  It was also a nice tribute to my mom, who brought me up with the understanding that death is just another part of life”

Authentic Cowboy

Kimberly’s vintage dress (from Timeless Vixen) is adorable for a number of reasons, but I especially love how it is an absolutely perfect match to Anthony’s way too cool authentic vintage cowboy tuxedo and shirt! In fact the whole wedding was based around his very special outfit – who says it’s all about the Bride?

Thanks to the gorgeous Noa for sharing…

A Topsy Turvy, Day Of The Dead, Mexican, Skull Spectacular

August 5, 2009 in Wedding | Written by

I swear sometimes I am overwhelmed by the greatness of the submissions I receive for my little blog. I have many people say to me that I must not sleep due to the amount of blogging I do, but I really only wish I could do more!

When I saw Melissa & Phil’s wedding I knew I’d be getting these bad boys up asap! The couple went for a ‘Day of the Dead’, skull and Mexican theme - complete with an awesome brightly coloured skull encrusted cake made by The Bleeding Heart Bakery (plus custom skeleton cake topper from Claylindo.) The couple have matching skull tattoos that they got after only 8 months of dating so there knew it was pretty much the perfect theme for them. When they started to plan their wedding they only had two things they knew they wanted - skulls and tacos!

Melissa explains:
I heard about a Mexican custom for the newlyweds’ cake to have a skeleton bride and groom perched atop it.  This symbolized the couple will not only be together until death, but even after death for all eternity.  We liked this concept so much, we extrapolated upon it and made it the theme and focus of our entire wedding.

The Dia De Los Muertos theme was a perfect fit! It is a custom that is spiritual, quirky, morbid, and unique – just like us!

The couple also incorporated a quirky, retro feel to the day. As Melissa went on to tell me:
I wanted a “vintage” feel for the attire, but also knew that I NEEDED to wear a cute top hat. Or I would possibly die. All the maids had pinup-style dresses and hairdos with skull feather fascinators in their hair. I wore a long A-line dress by Maggie Sottero with a custom made top hat from Topsy Turvy Designs, and had a slight steampunk look happening. I tried to make the guys look a teensy bit vintage with their vest and sans-jacket look. And Phil wore a lovely long suit jacket that looked almost pall-bearer-esque and complimented his long hair nicely.

A huge Rock n Roll Bride thank you to Melissa & Phil for sharing their day…and a even bigger thank you to every single one of you that takes the time to send your wedding gorgeousness my way! I ♥ you all…

A Bustling Flurry Of Exhilaration

July 27, 2009 in Wedding | Written by

When thinking about Mexico, the images that swim around my head (that is, after tequila and fajitas of course) are a fabulous and brightly colour hubbub of excitement. A bustling flurry of exhilaration. To me, my assumption is definitely reflected in their amazing portraits – just check out that yellow wall!

The Bride, Dana, described their wedding vision to me:
I am from Boston and my husband is from Mexico City. We live in Boston, but I wanted to share his amazing culture and the unique city with my family and friends so we decided to have a destination wedding. Our theme was modern meets classic with a major emphasis on something that has always bound us: our love of music. The ceremony was done set to our favorite songs—a mix of alternative rock and classic Mexican music. Mexico City is in itself, a huge mix of styles and old meets new, so we really played that up in our choices for the whole 4-day experience. Modern hotel and flashy nightclub outings, mixed with a traditional hacienda wedding locale and a live mariache band.
