There’s been all sorts of uproar in the press about Ariel having given blonde hair (shock horror!) in the Little Mermaid reboot that’s set to hit the silver screen in 2017… but imagine if they made Eric a girl! How amazing would that be!? OK so that’d probably not going to happen in Hollywood, but it did at Fremantle’s South Beach, Western Australia!
“I get stars in my eyes when I look at these two girls who are such spunks as well as being clearly smitten and up for adventure!” photographer Natalija said. “I told them I just must do a photo shoot with them and Emma suggested this idea. It’s purely about fun for all of us. I also liked the idea of gender bending the Little Mermaid story.”
“Emma thinks Katie looks like the Little Mermaid with her stunning long red hair and Emma has always liked the idea of being a prince. We decided to play up the theme and dress up for a seaside adventure. As a photographer, I love the idea of adding more elements into a shoot to inspire my clients and have fun myself, so I handmade the sea crown and the epaulettes. They brought their own clothes and we ventured to Fremantle’s South Beach dunes.”
For the photo shoot at the latest Photography Farm workshop, photographer Lisa Devlin knew she needed to do something big. After all, at the last Farm Gareth and I got married again! After seeing Megan and Grant’s gorgeous wedding on Rock n Roll Bride, and reading how much Megan loves Disney (and just so happens to resemble a certain crimson haired mermaid) the ideas started bubbling away. She wanted to put a different twist on the mermaid idea though and eventually came across the story of Rusalka, from which The Little Mermaid movie was based. Luckily Megan and Grant also loved the idea and we’re thrilled to model for her!
“Our shoot was based on the Slavic Myth of Rusalkas”, Lisa told me, “Water spirits or mermaids with long red hair, who had to come into the woods for one week each year where they whiled away the time longing for the sea and hanging out by streams and rivers trying to lure young men into the water. Our slight twist is that our Rusalka falls in love with a boy in the woods and decides to stay so she has to make do with the bathtub!”
Bonding through their mutual love of Disney, it was more than fitting that Brandon and Ashley were inspired by the happiest place on earth for their wedding. These guys went all out! The day was held at Rancho Las Lomas and they had a real life zebra in attendance and a mermaid… no, I’m not kidding!
“We love a good theme and retro was the way to go for us”, began the bride. “We wanted a 1940s jungle explorer feel. The venue had Bengal tigers, white tigers, alpacas, wild cats, zebras, exotic birds and other wildlife which made it perfect! We had custom jungle cruise fast passes that had the return time for dinner, Jungle cruise news playing on a vintage record player at the entrance and 1940s music all around to set the mood. We also went all out with our bright flowers. The flowers really did it for us and brought the jungle feel we wanted to the wedding.
There’s nothing that evokes childlike wonder quite like mermaids. I don’t think there’s any girl who watched The Little Mermaid as a kid and afterwards didn’t wanted to be one… So when this shoot, although not strictly wedding inspired, landed in my inbox, I knew I wanted to share it with you. It’s pure fantasy but that doesn’t make it any less fabulous.
“I have a real love of fantasy shoots because you can completely let your imagination run free and bring your ideas to life”, wrote photographer Heline Bekker. “Gwenda, who played our mermaid, and I both work in the wedding industry and we do a lot of styled bridal shoots together. But we often talk about doing shoots just for us, something different, something not at all wedding-related, so we can spread our creative wings. Most of the time though, it just finds its way back to weddings…not this time though!”
