Hi Kat,

I’ve followed your blog since I got engaged in October and after a week of commiserating on the subject, I have to reach out for help. I am making my gown and all my bridesmaid’s gowns, but we are in a dilemma when it comes to my fiance.

The wedding is at a summer camp (very bohemian) and there is to be no hint of tuxedo attire let alone renting anything, and at (skinny) 6′, 145lbs, tattooed, long haired, we are really coming up short with finding anything his size, style, and not ‘traditional’ that he would actually be interested in looking at.

Do you know of any unique suit shops or websites (not Urban Outfitters) that could help point us in the right direction? Or should we just start scouring thrift shops? Our wedding is in 8 months.

Thank you so much for any help you can give!

Congratulations on the upcoming wedding from all at www.iamstaggered.com – we thought a few of us would take a crack at this to give you a bit more of a view.

♥ First up Hannah Claire Litman the www.iamstaggered.com/usa style expert…

Hi Rebeka,

First of all a big congrats to you on your impending nuptials. Your bohemian plans sound fabulous—please send pictures! I wish you had included a picture of your dress (and your groom!) but as you allude to a “gown” I am going to assume it is floor-length and bridal so with that said, though you are veto-ing the tux, I would guess that your betrothed would happily don a suit (of sorts) for his trip down to the aisle and into your happy-ever-after.

Though a bit on the pricey side, Paul Smith (www.paulsmith.co.uk) serves up some fabulous mens’ looks. Tailored to perfection, your fiancé can throw in a touch of boho whimsy thanks to Smith’s fabulous prints on shirts, ties and socks. We love them all, from his quintessential stripe to the fantastic florals. It takes a rockstar in the making to be able to rock some of the more outlandish prints but it sounds like Alan might be up to the challenge.

All items available from www.paulsmith.co.uk

Another nice twist might be to opt away from a jacket and instead go with a vest. If above your budget, why not take Smith’s looks as inspiration… Or maybe even splurge on a Paul Smith shirt and tie to pair with a more affordable suit. Just remember to keep the jacket and pants neutral and have fun with the rest of it!

If I were you, I would opt to play up your soon-to-be-husband’s skinny, “I’m in the band” look and keep tailored pieces slim-fitting. If you opt for a thrift store find or an off-the-rack suit, be sure to take it to a tailor who can fit it to his shape (though it sounds like this might be something you could do for him yourself) and give the illusion of bespoke threads.

Woohoo. New feature alert! I’ve decided that Saturday’s are going to become guest post days. I’ve always shied away from featuring guest posters before because…well…let’s be honest I’m a control freak and am very particular about what I like (just ask my husband!) BUT I’ve got a few reasons for changing my mind and introducing this new concept to the site. Therefore I thought it’d be cool to share my thought process with you all before we get going – and I’m going to be honest (because as we know, that’s me!)

I am crazy busy. Like mo’ fo’ crazy. By posting things other people can contribute it will mean I’ve got one less day of posts to write myself!

Don’t worry though, I’m not going to be accepting guest writers left right and centre. I have a very select and specific breed of invited writers coming on board to help me, all of which have got very specific areas of expertise and who can teach you/inspire you with some really cool stuff (we hope!)

And finally, more specifically to the Agony Aunt posts, even though being busy is awesome it does mean that if any of you email me your wedding queries or questions I simply just don’t have the time I’d like to devote to answering you all in as much depth as I could…so that’s where Aunt Anna comes in. So, I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the Rock n Roll Bride family, some of you may know her already, and those of you who don’t, we’ll you’re sure going to love her soon enough.

I need some advice. I live in Virginia, but all of my family lives back on the west coast. (I’m from Arizona) We decided that we would get married in Vegas this year so my family would be able to come (mainly my grandparents since they refuse to fly) They agreed to come and everyone seemed really excited about it. Then, I sent my mom pictures of what we’ll be wearing. She hasn’t shown my grandma yet, but she told her basically what they look like. When I called my grandma to talk to her about when we’ll be flying into Tucson, she started lecturing me. She said it’s “not a clown thing” and went on to say that if that’s what I’m going to wear, she won’t be able to come. Apparently, my clothing (which fits my personality very well) is making a mockery of marriage and weddings. I’m very upset about this, since she’s as close to me as my own mom. I don’t know what to tell her to convince her to come. Even my mother in law (who is extremely conservative) loves the outfit and thinks she’s being ridiculous. Have you known anyone to have problems like this?
(There’s pictures of our outfits attached if you’d like to see what the big deal is)

Thank you for your time.
Allison

rockabilly

Eugh Alison I feel for you, what a horrible situation to be in! So from what I gather it’s just your grandmother who has a problem with your wedding style? I can only imagine that weddings were very different in her day and so she has (unlike us!) never been exposed to anything other than an uber traditional wedding. My advice to you would be to write her a letter (grandmother’s LOVE to get real life letters) and explain to her your reasons for wanting to dress in an non traditional way – ie that this is how you dress all the time (surely she knows this already) and that you and your fiancé want your wedding to be a perfect reflection of who you are as a couple. Tell her how upset you are at the thought of her not being there and that you hope she will reconsider. The fashion and style of the wedding is all aesthetics at the end of the day and without her there it wouldn’t be right. Your wedding is the most important day of your life and it means a hell of a lot to you and your fiancé that all your family attend.

Have you visited Bakery yet? It is an amazing resource for bloggers like me, I love reading all their tips and tricks. If you’re an aspiring blogger or you just fancy reading something different for a change, then head on over.

This article on their today made me think…

Here’s what happens: You find a blog, love the blog, and tack it onto the numerous feeds in your Google Reader, categorizing it by industry and making cute little notes [or is that just me?]. You then check said feed daily, bulk up on all of your day’s recommended dosage of Inspiration, and forget it until tomorrow.

Here’s the problem: As a blogger, I recognize the need for community. And one of the easiest ways to gauge your community is through readers/commenters. So how do your readers who follow your feed tell you what they like/dislike if they’re not commenting b/c they rarely visit your site in actual formation?

I wonder if I have a load of readers who just see my via the RSS reader?  If so come say ‘Hi’ properly…I’d like to meet you :o )

And just because I can’t post without an image…check out this little beauty I found yesterday while searching for my new haircut (getting the chop tomorrow on by birthday eeeek!)
