“The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is not your usual destination wedding location…  Then again, we’re not your typical bride and groom,” wrote Erin & John. “First of all, we wanted to base our wedding and honeymoon around Carnival that happens every year in Trinidad.  It’s one of the world’s largest Carnival celebrations – and we wanted to be dressed in sequins, feathers, and not much else for our honeymoon celebration.  We invited our friends to come to Tobago the week before Carnival for our wedding.  We rented out all the villas at The Palms Villa Resort – and partied for a solid week leading up to our big day.  The following week, our friends followed us on our honeymoon…and danced with us in the streets of Trinidad!  How nice of Trinidad to throw us such a lovely wedding reception!”

The wedding day started with portraits on the beach, “Our photographer Angela Hubbard spent the morning following us around the small island of Tobago taking our photos on the beach, next to the colorful and whimsical architecture of Tobago, with goats, carrying chickens – you name it!  She captured such whimsical, beautiful, and silly moments… The photos are priceless.”

Erin wore an amazing Vera Wang gown and John designed his outfit himself.  ”He wanted something just as unique and special,” continued Erin. “He succeeded, with custom made boots, hat, suit, and a vintage Louis Vuitton silk shirt.  John’s best friend and best man, his chocolate lab, Loki, couldn’t be there – but his life-sized cut-out was!  As for the rest of the bridal party, we gave loose guidelines – but really, it was all about us. With a few accessories like parasols for the bridesmaids and matching hats for the groomsmen – everything came together beautifully.”

“To end our special day, we lit Chinese wishing lanterns and sent them off into the night sky.  It was so beautiful (despite our worry that our wedding might forever be known as “the night we burned down Tobago”) and magical – that thinking back on it now, it hardly seems real…”

If you’re a blog addict like me you may have seen some of the following images from Emily & Stef’s incredible festival wedding around the interwebs already. Emily is a wedding photographer herself and so a lot of the suppliers they used for their wedding weekend were friends as well as being exceptionally talented wedding industry peeps!

After proposing to Stef, Emily set to work planning a unique and quirky wedding to suit them and their family. Being a wedding photographer herself Emily had seen a lot of things she didn’t want for her own big day. It was important to them to have a wedding that reflected them, was chilled out and laid-back and fun for all their guests. “We had a bright, colourful, happy wedding that was all tied together with buttons,” Emily began. “We have shot weddings together for the past 5 years and wanted to have something that didn’t feel like we were at work. We also wanted an environment that was going to work well for our three children and lots of other little ones who would be at the wedding (about 27!) We both love music and festivals, so we wanted a lovely big party where everyone could relax and have fun. Someone described it as a mini summer holiday. That was the vibe.”

“There was craft, games, cake decorating, a tuck shop, two DJ set-ups, BBQ breakfasts, a sushi brunch, a hog-roast, falafel, a BYO bar, face-painting and balloons. We also really wanted to get married outside and have a humanist ceremony (something important in our lives), so Billycan Camping offered a perfect space for that too. The dress-code for the wedding was ‘please wear whatever you want so that you are comfortable in a field for a weekend but please can all the guys wear a bow tie.’ And people did just that! It was fabulous!”

The couple were legally married on the Thursday before their wedding weekend. You can see more info, photos and a cute video of this day on Steve Gerrard’s and O & C Photography‘s blogs. They photographed this part of the wedding for them.

However the day the couple consider to be their actual wedding day took place at Billycan Camping in Sussex. Emily actually found this venue after seeing this wedding on Rock n Roll Bride! As the wedding had a festival vibe, the majority of the guests camped over the nights before and after the wedding, making the whole thing a big massive weekend celebration!

Emily wore a bespoke dress made with vintage cotton lace from 1976 (the year she was born!) by Mr Christian. In the evening and for the after-party she changed the underskirt and bow from white to bright pink. Stef wore a pink suit from Aubin and Wills, but he had no idea that Emily had planned to add some pink to her outfit in the evening. It just all worked out perfectly you could say!

Almost all of the wedding decor was DIY and they bought a lot of items (crockery, picnic baskets, jars, board games) from charity shops. Emily explains, “I made lots of things before the weekend from corsages and ribbon wands to ceremony programmes and the guest book. Then on the the Friday I showed a few guests how to make the big paper flowers hanging in the yurt and they spent Saturday morning making them. We had a craft area so all the guys could make a bow tie (I really wanted all the guys to wear a bow tie!) and the ladies could make a pretty hair accessory or a corsage. My friend Charis and I made everyone a pinwheel corsage from felt and a button. There will be lots of DIY inspiration on our new lifestyle site New Homely over the next few weeks.”

“We had a do-it-yourself wedding with friends and family giving a huge amount of their help instead of traditional wedding presents. This is exactly how we wanted it to be but it’s not for the faint hearted. You have to really want a wedding like this as it takes a huge amount of planning, logistics (we hired and organized everything ourselves from the hog roast company to the main yurt, even the generators, everything apart the cake table, which we hired from Billycan Camping.)”

“I definitely couldn’t have done it without the amazing help from Paige of Paige One Events and Charley of London Bride. Paige helped me so much with making phone calls and sending emails, creating timelines and spreadsheets (with a three children under 5 this was tricky for me to do all by myself!) Both Paige and Charley were amazing on the day making sure that everything ran smoothly and co-ordinating all my friends and family so that everyone could join in and help to create the weekend of our dreams without me having to worry about a thing.”

Their wedding was photographed by the fabulous Polly Alexandre, someone who’s work both Emily & Stef have admired for a long time. “We had a first look before the ceremony by a lake near Arundel Castle. Completely amazing and perfect walking up to meet my husband-to-be through long grass in my flip flops, tapping in him on the shoulder and him turning round and seeing me for the first time in my dress. Amazing and intimate. It gave us some really special time together that we knew we wouldn’t get later with our three young children and lots of family and friends. Polly photographed it beautifully and we also took the opportunity to do our couple portraits then too, so that after the ceremony we could just go with the flow.”

The couple also employed The Wedding Reporter to come and write their wedding story for them. If you want to read more about how the day went and what it was like to actually be there, then be sure to go and check out her report on her blog (part one and part two.)

“The first time I met Lacy was over 10 years ago in high school where we became fast friends,” photographer Daniel Stark told me. “Unfortunately, she moved before our senior year and we gradually lost touch. When it came time to plan her wedding she walked into a bridal shop that happened to have my business cards. I was thrilled when they asked me to photograph their fun, edgy, rockstar wedding.”

“Lacy has always been really cool and edgy even in high school.  And Brandon couldn’t have been a more perfect match for her. They quickly got identical tattoos with their own made up symbol that shows the love for each other. It was even on their wedding cake.”

Hi Kat,

I’ve followed your blog since I got engaged in October and after a week of commiserating on the subject, I have to reach out for help. I am making my gown and all my bridesmaid’s gowns, but we are in a dilemma when it comes to my fiance.

The wedding is at a summer camp (very bohemian) and there is to be no hint of tuxedo attire let alone renting anything, and at (skinny) 6′, 145lbs, tattooed, long haired, we are really coming up short with finding anything his size, style, and not ‘traditional’ that he would actually be interested in looking at.

Do you know of any unique suit shops or websites (not Urban Outfitters) that could help point us in the right direction? Or should we just start scouring thrift shops? Our wedding is in 8 months.

Thank you so much for any help you can give!

For this reader dilemma I called upon the expertise of Staggered – a wedding blog for boys! I knew they’d have the answer. Rebeka & Alan I hope these ideas can help you out!

♥  ♥  ♥

Congratulations on the upcoming wedding from all at www.iamstaggered.com – we thought a few of us would take a crack at this to give you a bit more of a view.

♥ First up Hannah Claire Litman the www.iamstaggered.com/usa style expert…

Hi Rebeka,

First of all a big congrats to you on your impending nuptials. Your bohemian plans sound fabulous—please send pictures! I wish you had included a picture of your dress (and your groom!) but as you allude to a “gown” I am going to assume it is floor-length and bridal so with that said, though you are veto-ing the tux, I would guess that your betrothed would happily don a suit (of sorts) for his trip down to the aisle and into your happy-ever-after.

Though a bit on the pricey side, Paul Smith (www.paulsmith.co.uk) serves up some fabulous mens’ looks. Tailored to perfection, your fiancé can throw in a touch of boho whimsy thanks to Smith’s fabulous prints on shirts, ties and socks. We love them all, from his quintessential stripe to the fantastic florals. It takes a rockstar in the making to be able to rock some of the more outlandish prints but it sounds like Alan might be up to the challenge.

All items available from www.paulsmith.co.uk

Another nice twist might be to opt away from a jacket and instead go with a vest. If above your budget, why not take Smith’s looks as inspiration… Or maybe even splurge on a Paul Smith shirt and tie to pair with a more affordable suit. Just remember to keep the jacket and pants neutral and have fun with the rest of it!

If I were you, I would opt to play up your soon-to-be-husband’s skinny, “I’m in the band” look and keep tailored pieces slim-fitting. If you opt for a thrift store find or an off-the-rack suit, be sure to take it to a tailor who can fit it to his shape (though it sounds like this might be something you could do for him yourself) and give the illusion of bespoke threads.

Mo & Chris wedding inspiration came from the 1940′s and the fact that Chris is an old Ska kid. The bride explained, “For our clothes we decided we wanted a vintage feel. Chris wanted to stay away from tuxedos and suits and being an old ska kid at heart he wanted to have a vintage swingers kind of style. He gave the groomsmen their flat caps as a gift, they all picked their own colors, and he wore a black fedora with a feather in it. He told them to get grey shirts and black pants. The suspenders were my favorite part.”

Mo wore a tea length dress with amazing purple shoes which actually set the colour scheme for the entire day! “My dress was actually from David’s Bridal and so were the bridesmaid dresses. I was really set on a tea length dress. I have this affinity for the corporate wedding money machine but didn’t want to buy my dress online. It all came down to convenience. My friends were all different body types and some live in other parts of the country so I wanted to make sure they could all pick styles that made them feel dead sexy. We got a discount on the bridesmaid dresses because I bought my dress there. My veil and feather hairpiece were also from David’s Bridal. The sales lady put them in my hair when I tried on my dress and it made my Mom cry so we got them. That was a smart sales lady.”

“My necklace and earrings were a gift from my Sister-in-law. My diamond tennis bracelet was my Grandmother’s. I have a big Irish Catholic family and it’s tradition for the women of our family to wear her bracelet at our weddings. My Aunt Mad loans it to us on the day of the wedding but there’s hell to pay if she doesn’t get it back afterwards! I pinned Chris’ Grandmother’s brooch to the bow on the back of my dress. The birdcage for the cards is another thing that gets passed around our family for weddings.”

The gorgeous silk ribbon fabric flowers came from JoeNet2 on etsy, “The seller, Annette, was great,” continued Mo. ”I told her my ideas and she sent me an envelope filled with color swatches of ribbon for me to choose the colors from. She even threw in a free flower girl bouquet and boutonniere for Chris.”

The decor and reception ideas were all DIY’ed by the couple and their friends & family. Mo explained, “My Dad made his amazing meatballs and my Mom brought munchies for the cocktail hour. My Mom was a HUGE help in organizing set up the morning of the wedding. My Uncle Rich BBQs competitively and offered his BBQing skills as a wedding gift. He BBQed his delicious pulled pork and chicken. Aunt Terry pitched in and made the Baked Ziti with my Aunt Kathy.  I surprised Chris with his favorite chocolate cake from Honey’s Sit N Eat. Friends of ours offered their catering skills to manage the potluck table and keep everything flowing. Another friend offered to bar-tend in exchange for a tip jar. We had our favorite Yards beer selections and handpicked the wine. My Aunt Pat donated the coffee and rolls as a wedding gift. My family loves to cook and so do many of my friends so I had no doubt the potluck would be awesome. The rest of the food for side dishes and desserts was all potluck from my guests. We gave them recipe cards with the invitations so we could build a wedding recipe box to keep.”

“Chris’ Mom handmade all the table runners and embroidered the napkin holders with our initials. She is crafter by profession so I gave her full reign to decorate the room any way she wanted. She lives in North Carolina so we worked for months over the phone to plan out what she wanted to do. She came up with the all the ideas for decorations. Mums are my favorite flowers because they bloom in the fall! Chris’ brother Bobby made origami birds of all different colors to hang above the fireplace. Apparently they had a hell of a time figuring out how to hang them that morning but I loved how it looked!”
