Alice in Weddingland – Beautiful & Affordable Wedding Flowers

With Rock n Roll Bride columnist Alice’s wedding day drawing ever closer, this month she decided that it was high time to tackle something she was a little nervous about – the flowers! Pretty blooms may not sound too terrifying to some, but as a punky chick who readily admits to not being the ‘flower type’, she didn’t even know where to start. Luckily she found a lovely florist in her home town of Brighton who was not only able to help her find her perfect flowers within budget, but who was able to show Alice that actually flowers aren’t that scary at all.

With less then 12 weeks to go everything is (hopefully!) coming together.  Still, there remains a few pieces of my wedding puzzle that need to be organised, and this month I’ve been an absolute bridal machine getting as much sorted out as possible.  Wedding flowers always caused me slight concern when allocating a budget to each element of the wedding, because, quite frankly, I had no idea where to begin! I’d never stepped foot in a florist, and found the ones that I walked past in Brighton quite unapproachable and intimidating.  So needless to say, organising my wedding flowers was not something I was looking forward to.

A few weeks ago I was invited on a girly night out with Kat, Joanne Fleming (my wedding dress designer), photographer Jacqui Mcsweeney and the infamous Lisa Devlin in Brighton.  It was over copious amounts of cocktails that the topic of wedding flowers came out, and Lisa suggested a little florist tucked away on the outskirts of Brighton. One twitter reminder the next day, and I set about googling “Miss Moles Flower Emporium”.  From the website I thought that the flowers looked pretty, but what do I know about flowers?  I knew that it was best that I arranged a meeting with Barbara Mole and went to her shop to see what she had available in the flesh.  So, following a lovely exchange of emails Graham and I set out for the Emporium armed with images of flowers I’d seen in bridal magazines that I’d cut out and scrap-booked that we could use as inspiration, and three retro buckets that we were hoping to use as centrepieces.

A Marie Antoinette Inspiration

You know I’ve got a bit of a ‘thing’ for Marie Antoinette right? Well Marie Antoinette + pink hair couldn’t really be more perfect for Rock n Roll Bride if it tried could it?

“This is what happened when 2 crazy photographers from different states in Australia put their heads together,” began photographer Vanessa. ”It all started with a wig Rhondda found on the internet (not the 1 we used actually) and after many chats and emails later we came up with Marie Antoinette as a bride. I wanted a bouquet out of the norm and didn’t really want traditional flowers in it. What better florists to put my thoughts of an “APPLE” bouquet into something fab..”Velvetlily” florist. So after a talking to them about want I wanted they came up with this amazing result! I also wanted apples and vine in the hair!!..a bit of a task for the make-up artist but we got there in the end.”

“We were also trying to think what other props we could use to make this work…hmmm A PIANO!! After hunting through the internet we finally found an old one that would work perfectly! I didn’t want to over kill the shoot with massive amount of props like you see these days in some other shoots..so we kept it simple with mainly the piano and just a chair. With the costumes again putting a twist on things.”

Gorgeous huh? I’m desperate for a Rock n Roll Bride to rock this look on her actual wedding day!

Offbeat & Alternative Floral Inspiration

“We had the idea for a Rock n Roll themed stylized wedding shoot and one of our former client was perfect for it!” explained photographer Jessica. “MJ is a local tattoo artist and amazing painter. We set up in an apple orchard on a fall day and had a mix of vintage glass, flowers, instruments and an old radio from the 1930′s. The shoot was styled by our assistant and partner-in-crime Brooke Biette and flowers were provided by the amazing Judy Bourgeois of Flora Fauna. The bottom of the bouquet even had a record that was melted down to go around it.”

“The couple began the shoot in a vintage wedding dress and suit in the orchard and as it got darker their craziness came out and they changed into a long black dress and black tux with chain belt and red sneakers.  They were rocking the poses too!”

Tessa & Keith’s Neo Victorian Wedding

Tessa & Keith are a little bit fabulous no? In fact any bride that wears a blue dress is all right in my book! “My inspiration came from our artistic backgrounds and aesthetic preferences”, the bride told me. “I am a crafter and burlesque performer. Keith is a visual artist. Together, we both had very strong opinions about how the wedding should look and feel. We settled on a neo-Victorian theme because of its elegance and refinement. I chose to wear blue instead of white because I wanted to be able to reuse my outfit, and I wanted a corset and a skirt instead of a dress because it was more versatile. The shade of blue we chose also suited the matron of honour and best woman well!”

“Our wedding party was intentionally kept very small so that we would not feel stressed about coordinating a lot of people on the big day. The preparation was extremely low key and relaxing. I would not have done it differently.”

The gorgeous blue dress is question was custom made by Morúa Designs in London (corset) and Recollections (bustle). With this Tessa wore shoes by Bordello to which she added Swaorvski crystals herself.

Tim & Jodie’s Natural Science and History Museum Wedding

Tim & Jodie were hitched at The Natural Science and History Museum in Denver and I am more that a little bit in love with them and their wedding. Not only becuase Jodie looks fabulous and the venue is a beaut, but becuase the idea behind their wedding was to celebrate more than just their love for one another…they celebrated their love for everyone!

The couple explained, “We both agreed that the wedding was just as much about our friends and family as it was about us, so almost every detail was considered with our guests in mind. We looked at the wedding as our chance to throw an unforgettable party, and we definitely succeeded. It’s hard to put my finger on one particular detail that made it so great, but we heard, “Best. Wedding. Ever.” over and over again from guests, staff, and even the off-duty police officers who were working security. We tried to stick to a few basic tenets (emphasis on the “tried”) and they included: Don’t overthink it. Don’t worry about “the rules”. Don’t do anything just to impress someone else.  Do have fun.”

“Regarding the rules, we did little “by the book.”  Even our ceremony was far from traditional.  Our officiant was Tim’s former boss from Twist and Shout, a long-haired hippy named Paul.  Paul is, as he says, ordained through the powers of the internet, and our ceremony was not religious in the slightest bit.  Rather than having a reading from the book of [insert bible book here] we chose to have a reading from “the book of Starship.” Before exchanging vows, Tim’s brother and Jodie’s college best friend took turns reciting the lyrics to Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.  Besides being one of Jodie’s karaoke standards, the song had the right amount of familiarity to make people smile and feel “in” on the joke, and yet the lyrics to the pop tune took on a new meaning in the context of a wedding ceremony.”

“We have a lot of gay friends and are both keenly aware that they are denied the right to engage in a legally-binding ceremony such as ours, and we wanted to be mindful of that and have our wedding be as inclusive as possible.  To achieve that goal, we registered with the Human Rights Campaign’s marriage equality advocacy division as part of our bridal registry, and it was great to see so many people donating money to their cause on our behalf.  And, in another break from tradition, we asked our officiant to read an excerpt from the court decision early marriage equality case – Goodridge v. Dept. of Health. The judge’s decision considered marriage as fulfilling yearnings for security, safe haven, and a connection that expresses our common humanity.  Tim’s a recent law school graduate, and focused much of his studies on the rights of sexual minorities.”

Jodie wore two dresses. The first, a sexy body-con number by The Row and the second a sheath dress by Dolce & Gabbana – she bought both on sale at an outlet mall! “I consider myself a pro bargain hunter – both dresses combined cost me less than $500,” she continued. “I never imagined that I would wear anything remotely resembling a wedding dress in color or design, but both of these dresses jumped off the rack at me. Plus, I liked the touch of slut factor in the tight short dress by The Row. Neither of us wanted to break the bank on items we would never wear again, and so we both went for pieces that didn’t scream “bride and groom”. I will wear all items again and again. The second pair of shoes were the ubiquitous Vivienne Westwood jelly heels. The pearl necklace was Tim’s mom’s necklace that she made herself by adding pearls to throughout the years as her budget allowed. She passed away in 1998, so there was no doubt that it would be worn at our wedding in her honor. I made the red and turquoise beaded necklace, again, because I am a cheap date.”

The unusual wedding cake was also a talking point at the wedding. I’ve personally never seen anything like this but I think it’s a great (and funny!) idea for those on a budget, “The cake was another expense that we thought could easily get out of hand. We thought about all the weddings we had been to where guests don’t even touch (sometimes don’t even see) the cake, yet the couples had probably spent a fortune on them.  In order to avoid this happening at our wedding, Tim came up with the idea to screenprint an image of one of those fancy cakes on top of a sheet cake from Safeway. We ordered three sheet cakes, each with a variety of fillings and frosting, and called it a day. My sister picked the cakes up at her local grocery store, and happened to know the woman working behind the counter…she gave my sister a discount. We were charged $10 each for three cakes.”
