With a Little Help From Our Friends…{Part 2}

As daylight broke, Anita, Alan and their guests rose for the exciting day that lay ahead of them. Anita put on her dress, designed especially for her by a local dress maker, had her hair & make up done by her Aunt and picked up her flowers all donated by friends. After getting ready the whole party headed to the wedding tent, built by her Uncles, to begin the rest of their lives together. What a celebration!

But that wasn’t all. Day 3 of the celebration consisted of a Chilean Curanto ( a massive beach BBQ!) Go check out these photographs too.

With a Little Help From Our Friends…{Part 1}

It’s unlike me to split a wedding up into 2 parts but Anita & Alan’s really was a wedding that deserves more than one post. You’ll see why.

Being a photographer based in Chile means that the wonderful Kyle Hepp gets to photograph some truly unique and individual weddings. Being a third world country, weddings that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds are out of the question and for Anita & Alan’s wedding in particular everything was set up with love, devotion and with help from friends and family.

“The event started the day before, with everyone coming together to set up and organise for the next day’s festivities. “On Thursday, after Seba and I spent two days on vacation exploring Castro, we met up with Anita, Alan, and about 30 of their closest friends.” Kyle told me “We carpooled from Castro to Quicavi, another little seaside town, where we would take a boat to Voigue. But first, we had to load that bad boy up. When all was said and done, I was nearly certain that we would sink. I have never seen so much stuff packed into such a small space. I mean, pretty much the entire wedding, minus the tent, was being transported. As soon as we arrived on the island, everyone set up their tents, we ate lunch and then we got right to work — and by “we,” I mean everybody else worked really hard and Seba and I photographed them working really hard.”

Sweethearts

When blog land favourite, Amelia Lyon, posted Sam & Nikki’s amazing looking wedding on her blog yesterday I was sure some other, high flying, blogger would have snapped them up for a feature. Never one to give up without a fight, I emailed Amelia on the off-chance they were available…and guess who got lucky?!

Sam is actually Amelia’s cousin. He married his sweetheart in January and luckily for us Amelia was first on hand to take these amazing shots. Nikki wore her Grandmother’s dress (sweet) and stunning cobalt blue shoes from DSW.

Family Ties

This beeeautiful family/bridal shoot was submitted to me by the bride, Kim, a few months ago and I have been eagerly awaiting the images from photographer Natalie for what feels like an age! I was so excited when they arrived that I couldn’t wait to get them up. You’ll see why! This gorgeous family had a shoot that would not only remind them of their wedding day, but that encompassed them as a unit

“My inspiration, and Kim’s inspiration connected immediately!” Natalie tells me “It’s not that I “try” to be different,.. it just happens! I am attracted to art, not tradition. I am a freelance artist besides a photographer, so when thoughts/visions and poses come into my mind… I have to draw them out! I have been asked how I think of my poses when I shoot… and I really don’t know how to answer it. The thoughts come to me randomly. Driving, or just sitting at home working. Kim is so creative and artistic herself, but the two of us together, created so much style! Kim let me be creative, and completely trusted me to do whatever I wanted.”

How to…Deal with Uncooperative Relatives

I need some advice. I live in Virginia, but all of my family lives back on the west coast. (I’m from Arizona) We decided that we would get married in Vegas this year so my family would be able to come (mainly my grandparents since they refuse to fly) They agreed to come and everyone seemed really excited about it. Then, I sent my mom pictures of what we’ll be wearing. She hasn’t shown my grandma yet, but she told her basically what they look like. When I called my grandma to talk to her about when we’ll be flying into Tucson, she started lecturing me. She said it’s “not a clown thing” and went on to say that if that’s what I’m going to wear, she won’t be able to come. Apparently, my clothing (which fits my personality very well) is making a mockery of marriage and weddings. I’m very upset about this, since she’s as close to me as my own mom. I don’t know what to tell her to convince her to come. Even my mother in law (who is extremely conservative) loves the outfit and thinks she’s being ridiculous. Have you known anyone to have problems like this?

Eugh Alison I feel for you, what a horrible situation to be in! So from what I gather it’s just your grandmother who has a problem with your wedding style? I can only imagine that weddings were very different in her day and so she has (unlike us!) never been exposed to anything other than an uber traditional wedding. My advice to you would be to write her a letter (grandmother’s LOVE to get real life letters) and explain to her your reasons for wanting to dress in an non traditional way – ie that this is how you dress all the time (surely she knows this already) and that you and your fiancé want your wedding to be a perfect reflection of who you are as a couple. Tell her how upset you are at the thought of her not being there and that you hope she will reconsider. The fashion and style of the wedding is all aesthetics at the end of the day and without her there it wouldn’t be right. Your wedding is the most important day of your life and it means a hell of a lot to you and your fiancé that all your family attend.

An Eco Friendly Family Wedding

Fern & Ben organised their eco wedding themselves with the help of their families. Fern’s uncle even made the gorgeous cake. Everything from the invitations (recycled paper with hand-pressed flowers) to the ring bearer’s pillow (Fern sewed it herself) was a DIY job. Ben even designed Fern’s engagement ring from eco-friendly jewelers (rose gold with a single chocolate diamond.)

They chose to get married on the land where Fern was born. The material for the gorgeous napkins were all different patterns and colours and every table had a sharpie at it so the napkins could act as a guestbook, each piece will now be turned into a quilt with which they will always remember their wedding day.

A couple of other unique aspects from this wedding were the slideshow (they pinned old pictures of themselves on a clothesline in the trees) and the fact that Fern’s oldest sister married them. The dress that Fern wore was a designer dress that she borrowed (she’s a model). It was an original, one of a kind Melissa Sweet sample.

The flowers were different assortments of wildflowers and no table or bridesmaid had the same arrangement. The ENTIRE bridal party even went barefoot! They had a bagpipe player before the ceremony which was very, very cool and beautiful. Their reception was super fun with a bluegrass band, good-luck sparkler dance and plenty of dancing.

Orange.

Rachel & Geordie are a little bit too gorgeous to keep to myself and the orange motif that runs throughout the images – from her shoes and flowers to the Mini (bought by Rachel’s Mother a week before the wedding!) and the JCB (!) - is just too damn awesome. The wedding took place in Rachel’s parents’ back yard and really had the stylish vintage vibe going on.

Rachel’s stunning 1920’s inspired dress was custom made by her good friend (and clothing designer) Mireille Stettler and Geordie complimented her perfectly with his casual look.

Days Gone By

Emma & Chris had their engagement shoot at home with the french bulldog Colby for company. Chris’ sister photographed them using film and digital to get these great shots. I have had such a resurgence of love for film photography recently, I am loving reliving days gone by with the gorgeousness of real film photography so these are right up my street. Don’t this look like they are literally living in the 1970’s? I ♥ it!

When She Used To Rock n Roll

Kirsten & Josh’s wedding not only had a fun, retro feel, but they really went all out with their 1950’s diner theme. I am crazy in love with the Brides entire outfit – from her Dorothy ruby slippers to her cute polka dot dress made by her Mother and friend Marnie Rogers, who designs clothes for Wintersun. The gorgeous Bridesmaid had a rockabilly style to them – especially their amazing hairdos!

For the reception, the couple went all out for a 50’s diner theme, where they designed and made everything themselves. The centrepieces were giant lolly jars and each table had a different type of old school lolly, which was the name of the table (“Sweethearts” “Milk bottles” “Ice creams” “Jelly beans” etc) The place cards were black & white candy striped lolly bags with everyone’s names on them, each painstakingly tied with little red ribbons. The placemats were old records that they picked up in an op shop and they had little gifts for everyone on the table – mini erasers in the shape of burgers, fries, hotdogs and donuts, plus vintage metal wind up toys.

Each table also had a diner style spring loaded napkin holder, salt and pepper shakers and tomato and mustard bottles. Then best of all, for dinner they served burgers, hotdogs, pizza and fries. I bet their guests were thrilled – no boring wedding food for them!

The celebrations continued into the night with the couple having their first dance to ‘I remember the Bride when she used to Rock n Roll’ by the Stray Cats, finishing the night by swaying along to ‘Earth Angel’.
