Emma & Mattias’ urban & gritty engagement session in Hackney Wick (the East End of London) have inspired me no end. I not only love the rough ‘n ready, graffiti style shots (which are fast becoming a bit of a McNeil signature) but the wonderful heart shots send my heart a-flutter. I asked David how this images came about and he told me that as they were wondering down the street, looking for locations, they came across a warehouse where a Valentines night was being set up. They asked nicely if they would use their heart covered wall as a backdrop and the lovely people said yes. Aren’t the results fabulous?

NEWSFLASH!

Stand by for the announcement of the year…Yes I, Kat Williams obsessed with all things blog am taking the weekend OFF! “Holy crap” I hear you cry, “How is such a thing possible?” Well you’re right, this will be my first weekend away from the blog since…well…January I reckon. How ridiculous is that?

Gareth & I are heading to a family event and whilst I would normally work my fingers to the bone the week before scheduling posts over the weekend so you wouldn’t miss me, I’ve decided that I really could do with a bit of a break and this weekend away to just concentrate on me and Gareth, not worry about moderating comments, replying to emails or checking my twitter. Therefore if you do need to get hold of me you’ll just have to wait!

Have a good old weekend people. Love you all! But hang on, I couldn’t leave you with nothing could I? No no no no….let’s hope theis funky engagement shoot by UK photographer David McNeil keep you busy until I return.

I am not the most patient of people so when photographer David McNeil told me about Caroline & Callum’s upcoming wedding at the beginning of this year I was already dying to see the results. The couple not only found David through Rock n Roll Bride but Caroline proceeded to tease me with regular email updates on their wedding planning gorgeousness – from her amazing David Fielden dress to her perfect Vivienne Westwood shoes (I loved them so much I even attempted to make my own Rock n Roll Bride version!)

The couple got married in May and did a fantastic job DIYing pretty much everything! Caroline collected a gazillion (I’m pretty sure it was that exact number) empty bottles for all the venue flowers and centrepieces. The couple hit a flower market at 4am the day before the wedding to collect all the blooms and make the bouquets and boutonnieres on the morning whilst simultaneously folding the 17-fold accordion-style wedding booklet – phew! Inside the booklet was the order of service and info about the wedding as well as a secret section (which guests were invited to find after the ceremony) containing bowing score cards (the couple had bowing at their reception and started with a ‘first bowl’ instead of a first dance!) a frame to use in the photo booth (booth supplied by Boothbox) and a mini history of the venue – Shoreditch House.

The table runners were all Ikea fabrics, painlessly sewed by Caroline’s Mum and a friend, which looked fantastic set up with the red flowers, ‘Hello My Name is…’ place card/stickers and all the different types of bottle ‘vases’.

Caroline even made her Bridesmaid’s dress herself (you may remember she also made her own gorgeous yellow dress for their engagement shoot.)

Instead of a cake, the couple had baked 3 different types of cookies and set up a tin bucket, glasses of milk and red & white striped paper ‘party bags’ to go with it. Caroline’s brother also made them a surprise cake topper – the pair on a surf board with Caroline in her dress!

Phew – what a lot of gorgeous details huh? Well I’ve saved the best for last – just read this and weep!

So C bought my engagement ring from a pretty swanky and well known jewellers (that’s not why he went there, it was where the nicest ring was and the lady, as you’ll see, has been super helpful!)

Since then we have been in and met up with the same lady, who is the manager there, a few times… to get E ring resized, to choose my wedding ring and then again to choose C’s. So, we have spent a fair amount of cash in there, but NOTHING compared to others there (overheard 2 sales there previously, one for a £32,000 watch, and the other some jewellery to the tune of £160,000!)

WELL! Every time we go in we stay ages, drink champers and chat with her as she is our age and comes from similar part of the world as us, is just married, doing up a house too etc etc…basically genuinely get on. So, we go to look at rings and talk pets I sneakily show her a pic of my shoes which she shows the other girl in the store too and we all swoon. THEN, she says…
“Listen, you’ll have to come in a bit closer to the wedding a show me what your dress looks like”

Me: ‘Absolutely!”

Her: “And we’ll have to pick out something together for us to lend you for the day as your ’something borrowed’”

UHHHHH queue shocked silence…did she really mean what I think she meant? Cos as far as I knew only royals and celebs ‘borrow’ jewellery!

BUT YES! She said it again when we went in to get C’s ring and so I can pick some FAB jewels to ‘borrow’ for our wedding! My dress has too much going on already to have a necklace… but I think a fab pair of earrings wouldn’t go astray huh!?!

UM, WOW!? I just believe it! My mom jokes that I’ll be walking down the aisle with Dad on one side and a big security guard on the other!

So, yeah, a few weeks before the wedding I went in and together she and I chose an amazing pair of earrings that would work perfectly with the lace on my dress but not be too much for the whole ensemble!  I thought I saw the price (she never showed me any prices, just kept bringing more pairs over) and thought it was £10k…wow.  THEN Cal went to pick them up the week of the wedding and saw the price for real (again, wasn’t told it, we were told they were insured and when I was a bit nervous was told just to be careful as you would be of any jewellery!)… uh yeah, £25,000 something borrowed!!

Thanks to photographer David and the gorgeous couple Caroline & Callum for sharing their amazing wedding story with us!

ps Yes – again, a million images – but it’s worth the scrolling to see all of these!

Full On Vamp

My friend David McNeil took a trip to Brighton with TV Presenter Jules who needed some new shots for her portfolio. Poles apart from the usual boring head shots, David and Jules went from cute and sweet to full on vamp within a matter of shots which created some really amazing results. As soon as I saw these I know I’d have to share, these could be straight out of a Vogue fashion shoot no problem!

The English Way

In many ways the UK is a very forward thinking, literal place to live. Gay marriage is legal, you can drink at 18 and not attending church every Sunday is generally not frowned upon. However when it comes to wedding legalities, Britain can be a little strict on the rules. You can’t, for example, legally marry outdoors. You are only able to wed at an officially consecrated place with an officially appointed person officiating the ceremony. However Lucy and J’s dream was to have an outdoor humanist ceremony at Oxon Hoath in Kent, so despite the English weather and the English laws, they did just that (they did of course have to do the legal thing as well.)

I am loving the following details about this wedding – Lucy’s dress and shrug combo was from Joanne Fleming Design in Brighton, UK and their completely unique rings were designed and made by the couple themselves. Lucy’s gorgeous bouquet was from Darling and Wild with the rest of the flowers all being done themselves who visited Covent Garden wholesale flower market to buy the blooms. Their uber cool twist on the traditional boutonnerie were again made by the couple themselves using white peacock feathers, leaves from the grounds of the venue and old buttons are pretty damn gorgeous though right?

Ahh England, I still love you.

Today is Sunday and although it seems strange to me that the whole world isn’t sat at home online (yes I am a total geek) it appears to be a slow day on the old world wide web.  So I thought I’d take this opportunity to draw your attention to my wonderful sponsors – I quite frankly think every single one of these guys rock, and I am completely honoured to have them as a permanent feature of my site. Share the link love and have a little click over to their site’s if you’re at a Sunday loose end.

Introducing…

Erica Berger has that San Fran cool thing down to a T and she is hoping to soon bring her unique style to destination weddings as well. Her photography is second to none and I literally adore every single image she has ever shot! Her work is fresh, luminous and always makes me feel sunny and warm! I could browse her flickr stream all day long and always find something to make me smile.
Erica will be travelling to New York to spread some of her photographic happiness from July 28th to August 5th 2009.  If you are in New York (you lucky thing!) then she is offering photo shoots at $500 including all the edited photographs afterwards. How who wouldn’t want that!? ps I demand the photographs for blogging afterwards!

David McNeil was born in Scotland but now resides in Chiswick, West London. A close friend of mine, I have been lucky enough to see his wedding photography blossom from this teeny tiny idea of a thing right up to this all encoumpasing photographic style that is taking the UK wedding scene by storm and braking the mould of the traditional, dull wedding photographer (seriously if only he’d figured out his calling sooner - we would have totally had him shooting our wedding!) I am very lucky to have such a talented friend who has taken many a good photograph of even me! I cannot rave about David enough. Go check out his site, like now.

I’m so totally and completely biased when it comes to my friend David McNeil’s photography and I don’t care…the thing is, he is just so amazingly talented for which  I am more than a little bit envious! Plus he’s lovely and all that jazz…which just makes his work even more fantastic. In fact when we met our competition winners, Vana & Damien a few weeks ago, whilst looking though David’s portfolio, Vana said ‘It really seems like you know all the people you photograph‘ and that’s just it, that’s why he is so great, none of his images seem staged or forced or awkward – and you know what, now I’m a little bit annoyed now that I didn’t coin that phrase myself!

Anyway, David has got a super busy month coming up so I’ll have plenty of wonderful weddings, engagements and bridal shoots to share with you, starting with this gorgeous, intimate afternoon tea wedding in London. Isn’t her dress just to die for? (edit: her dress is from Candy Anthony)

Terri & Sebastian eloped in Barcelona, just the two of them plus David McNeil the photographer (click here for the photographs) and Claire McDonnell the make up artist…here are their vows to each other.
What is it with all the videos nearly making me cry today?! I was under the impression my cold shell was impenetrable!

David was also featured on Wedding TV last Saturday and I totally forgot to share the link…go see him talking about his work, in particular Terri & Sebastian’s wedding here (approx 26 minutes in) Plus try to spot the me & husband as models in some of the photographs shown…hint my hair is brown!

London In The Rain

So after we left Vana & Damien yesterday, David (hard working as ever) headed off to London’s Southwark for a fabulously moody pre-wedding shoot! The rain may have been pouring, but David was able to capture the couple and their most glorious…and I have to say, the rain water on the ground does make for some amazing light.

David said:
After a pretty dismal day, some sun made it through the clouds, before clouding over and pouring with rain as we started the shoot.

However, I’m never one to be defeated, so after we arrived in Southwark I found a rather interesting empty car park, a rough round the edges theatre bar, a nicely lit railway tunnel and grimy door to use as backdrops.

I usually reschedule if the weather looks bad, but as you can see from tonight’s shoot, a bit of rain doesn’t mean the images have to suffer!
