I have a beautiful two-parter for you this afternoon, both the engagement shoot and wedding of Mark & Jolina. When I saw this shoot by MangoRed, who hail from The Philippines, I knew I had to blog it. I love the mix of mediums between the photography and illustrations. It’s something I’ve never seen before and it creates a really different and beautiful storytelling result don’t you think?

MangoRed worked with RabbitHole Creatives to create this shoot, as they explained, “We have been working with MangoRed for a long time now and our collaborations have proved our good creative rapport. The exchange of ideas are both orgasmic and highly productive. RabbitHole‘s concepts are captured in a very special light by MangoRed. You can see the attention to detail and the desire to capture the mood of every concept.”

“Inspired by each couple’s personalities, we explore many possibilities of translating them – to push the boundaries of pre-nuptial editorials. For Jolina & Mark’s pre-nuptial shoot, the ideas initially came from them. They were aiming for ethereal, boheme and fun. We then extended these ideas to a more visceral approach. We wanted it extra lush and overflowing with psychedelic vibes. Jolina Magdangal is a pop star and paved way to a fashion commotion during the late 90′s that is distinctively hers. Mark Escueta is a rock legend in the underground sub-culture. Both have delved into the music industry and carved Filipinos’ hearts with their compositions.”

“We started with their ideas and extracted the essence, which is the bohemian life. Truth, beauty and freedom at it’s most succulent form. Referencing from the bohemian movement of the late 60′s, we looked into inspirations such as The Cockettes, Kenneth Anger, Janis Joplin and Taking Woodstock. We also looked at Pre-Raphaelite artworks by Rosetti, Beardsley and Klimt that highly influenced the lifestyle. From those ideas, we concocted a story/editorial that captures all those moods. We then proposed a story of leisure, travel and folly. Colors and patterns are important visual cues. Hence, the styling of the clothes and the production/set design were carefully composed. We provided the vibrant backdrops, embellishing everything in a loose but fiery motion. Lace, argyle, luggage, twigs, party favors, rock band shirts, harp, kites, Lambrettas, crochet, make-shift swing, eloping Sedan, trumpet, parasol, gramophone, sand, sea, paper lanterns, bicycles – all mixed together in one big stew.”

“To make the whole output more raw and teeming with details, RabbitHole‘s Creative Director, Geof Gonzales, composed hand made illustrations and collages. It was a product of all of our visions to tell a visual story supported with these intuitive illustrations. Geof made the collages with the couple’s ideas in mind. Old books and magazine cut-outs and illustrations were combined with passages from books and novels and Nina Simone’s lyrics.”

Lisa & Geoff wanted to do something different, fun and cute for their two year anniversary shoot. “Geoff and I got exclusive permission to do a photo shoot inside the Up House replica in Herriman, Utah,” Lisa wrote. “When we heard about it being built we got a crazy little idea to drive out from California and take photos there. We are huge Pixar fanatics and absolutely LOVE the movie Up. We watched it the day it came out and we were engaged at the time. So watching the ‘Married Life’ sequence at the beginning of the film really hit home (read: bawling in the theatre). It still makes me tear up every time I watch it.”

“With less than a month to plan the shoot and trip, we made many-a-trip to Goodwill (I love thrifting!) to get the perfect costumes. I made our very own Adventure Book from scratch and I made the yellow dress too (at 5:30 am the day we were supposed to leave!) We have admired Blue Lily Photography for some time now, so we were overjoyed that they could be in Utah and could be our photographers. Being wedding photographers ourselves (The Goodness), it was huge to get such an awesome couple to create these amazing photos.”

“We dressed in costumes, recreated scenes from the movie, had a picnic, the whole nine yards! It was AMAZING! So much fun. I even made one of the dresses I wore that day.”

Aww this just melts my heart. I love it so!

When Rebekah & David’s wedding landed in my inbox a couple of weeks ago I just about let out a ‘whoop’ of joy! Colour colour everywhere, what’s not to love? Their CMYK theme is just perfect….perfect!

“Shortly after our engagement, David suggested that we have a CMYK wedding” Rebekah told me. “Graphic design is a massive part of our lives and to base our wedding on the colours that make up a lot of printed design work (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key Black) made so much sense to us. It was so much fun applying CMYK theme to our day, from table numbers, to my wedding dress to our bridesmaids.”

The wedding took place at the church they attend regularly, followed by a reception at The Roundhouse in Derby. They clearly put a lot of work and thought into the décor, including their fabulous and unique guest book idea, “We produced our own guest book by using a series of postcards that Dave designed and then we had guests write on them and peg them to a washing line, it was a great visual effect,” they said.

I know you’re all thinking ‘The dress Kat, what about her dress?!?’ Well Rebekah’s dress was made by True Bride which bought from Lori G Bridal. The team at the store also custom-made her fabulous multi coloured petticoat which she wore underneath the gown. “The colours in my petticoat were a solution to my desire to have CMYK on the dress,” she told me. “It wasn’t actually full petticoat, but individual square pieces of netting pinched up, like a handkerchief, and sewn on to one of the layers of my dress. I bought metres and metres of the netting from my local market and it worked a treat. The wonderful seamstress at the bridal shop dd any amazing job of realising my vision!”

Her bridesmaids all adopted one CMYK colour and bought their dresses from various high street stores. They wore their own shoes and each girl even found a pair of Converse trainers in their colour to wear in the evening! The girl’s also each had a different colour bouquet to match and the bride had a bunch of white blooms. The result is certainly dramatic and modern. I love it!

Did you ever look at someone’s wedding pictures and know instantly that you would be friends if you met in real life? Well that’s kinda how I felt when photographer Emma Case sent me Ronnie & Craig’s wedding last week. I know it sound superficial and a bit weird but these guys have got style…and there ain’t nothing cooler than a couple that bring that unique style into their wedding. See what I mean….?

Let me lay a few things out for you to try and explain my obsession with these guys. So Ronnie & Craig were married at Trunkwell Mansion House, in Reading (READING!? You know that’s where I live right?!..And Reading isn’t a huge town or anything. This excites me.) They pretty much DIY’ed anything and everything they could including the reception décor, the cake, the flowers, the car (yes, really – Craig restored it for the wedding) the stationery (Be sure to check out Ronnie’s website to see more of her work) and the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses! Ronnie’s Mum who made the dresses from Ronnie’s design also just so happens to have trained Ian Stuart, who is arguably one of the biggest bridal designers in the country right now.

Ronnie even wore a plastic and sparkly “Mrs Dearsley” necklace. You get the picture right…?

“I am an artist and wanted to hand paint what I could,” Ronnie told me when I asked her about all these DIY projects. “I started with the invites and slowly developed a retro tattoo theme which continued throughout the wedding with the escort cards, table numbers and welcome sign. Now the wedding is over I intend to paint our vows into where there were numbers etc and display the work in our home. I really enjoyed working on everything and would love to work with other couples who might want custom artwork for their invites or any other aspect of their day.”

“We had a huge wedding DIY project with a difference. When we got engaged Craig said basically I could do what I wanted with the wedding as long as we could use his 1971 camper van. Unfortunately, after being screwed over by a restorer, the camper van was a (beautiful) shell and needed basically a new everything putting in. Our engagement was around 18 months long and I think Craig spent every weekend working on the van to get it going, it finally made its first journey 3 days before the wedding, but was AMAZING and gorgeous and I’m so proud of Craig for getting it together.”

“Our wedding was by no means wildly controversial but it was a true reflection of us,” she continued. “When we first got engaged I spent hours browsing wedding venue sites and freaking out about food as us and about 99% of our family are mad fussy eaters. To be honest, I had only attended one wedding as an adult so I was totally out of my comfort zone and was totally taken in by the prescribed way of doing things that seems to fill most of the wedding magazines.”

“It wasn’t until I snapped out of this and thought, “Hang the hell on – what do WE like to eat?” that I realised the wedding should be about US instead of set menus. When we got engaged we’d celebrated with a cream tea, and we are hard-core BBQ fans, and I know now both of these things might be pretty standard in the wedding industry, but they are totally what I’d eat everyday if I could and we shaped our day around them.”

“So we found a venue that would accommodate our wishes for less than a billion pounds (seriously what is that all about?) and went from there. Eventually (way too late!) I discovered blogs like Rock n Roll Bride and the endless sources of inspiration out there for alternative weddings and our wedding started taking shape. The one thing we did get from bridal magazines was our colour scheme. We were pretty uninspired by the limited colour palettes we saw in most wedding pictures, until we saw an Indian themed wedding full of rich, vivid colours and we knew that was something we’d like. It evolved during the planning to pink, purple, yellow and turquoise, I had to spray paint the bridesmaids shoes to coordinate!”

“Also I mentioned that we’d like mismatched china and my mum immediately went on a madcap mission around every boot sale in the country until basically her whole house was full of old crockery. A few days before the wedding we glued together some homemade cake stands after I’d see a tutorial on GMTV. Our ceremony was very us, our vows were from some of our favourite songs, our readings were daft and we walked out each of us carrying one of our kids, they were wriggling all the way but it was lovely to have them with us.”

Burlesque performer Roxy Rose was the model for this wonderful gypsy bride (and no we’re not talking a ‘big fat gypsy wedding’ style gypsy bride, think more traditional!) for a styled shoot, the concept of which was dreamt up by Italian photographer Cinzia Bruschini. I am particularly loving the incredibly unique fan shaped bouquet – and yes that is made of real flowers!

Cinzia explains, ”This shoot is colourful and playful, in particular we wanted to redefine traditional wedding elements like the flower bouquet and the decorations; the flower bouquet is so daring, made by italian flower designer Roberto Monaldi using a Gregor Lesch technique. It is based on a radial weaved plot finished off inserting flowers (in this case: delphinum blu, dendrobium lilla, gypsophila paniculata).”

“We created other decorations using an old hand design tool: a spirograph! Spirals pattern is on the coloured garland and also on the handmade paper accordion; the result is a very gypsy fancy. The garland is really simple to do and I made it myself. First of all I cut coloured cardboard with round punches in different dimensions and then had a play about with multiple design combinations of spirograph. Then using a needle and sewing thread, I joirned the circles together as a garland.”

Super cute! Be sure to check out the adorable video too.
