I was drawn to one thing when Ian & Reisa’s Vancouver wedding landed in my inbox last week…can you guess what?!

Oh yes the bride’s incredible Allure Bridal dress. Holy pink ruffles Batman! It reminds me a lot of Gwen Stefani’s wedding dress (which was my dream dress when I was planning my wedding back in 2007/2008.)

The couple were actually legally wed in March in Costa Rica but wanted a big party for all their friends who couldn’t attend. The party was held in a furniture store that they own together, The Living Lab.

“I was extremely honoured and excited to photograph this lovely couple once again at their ring ceremony,” explained photographer Melissa. ”The last time I photographed these two was for their engagement and at that time, it was February, it was cold and it was also just before they jetted off to Costa Rica for their Wedding. This time around it was June, and although it hasn’t looked like summer, here in Vancouver, it was a pretty hot evening to be wearing a suit!”

“Since not everyone could make it to Costa Rica for their vows, the couple had a delightfully bright and elegant Ring Ceremony here in Vancouver to celebrate with those who weren’t able to attend. It seemed like the perfect extension to their Costa Rican celebration, as photos from their wedding holiday were hung in beautiful gold frames around the reception. So, even if you weren’t there, you were able to catch a glimpse of their wedding day.”

After a ceremony at Cathedral of Mary Immaculate, Alexandra & Kevin headed back to the bride’s family home for their reception. Alexandra and her sister were actually married within a week of each other (!) and so they both decorated the property to suit both their weddings.

Their photographers treated the couple to a ride on their pink cruiser bike for their portraits as it perfectly complimented the bride’s 50′s inspired Dolly Couture dress.

Jess & Rob got married “under a lone tree in a field” in a cermony that was perfectly related to the things that they adore. “They really do live a dreamy life,” their photographer’s Emmy & Aaron told me. ”Jess is a lover of horses and what better life than to run Foxstone Stables at Glenora Farm and also to live right above the stable with 300 acres of Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley paradise. They even have their own natural spring swimming pond, meadows with lone trees, and gorgeousness everywhere you look!” Needless to say, their home provided the perfect location for the wedding.

Emmy continued, “The whole day we felt like kids in a candy store with not quite enough time to fill our pockets. This dreamy day was a hip-nouveau-country-handle-bar-moustache-rayban-sunglasses-with-a-dash-of-vintage perfection! There were so many personal touches and such wonderful details that the result is that I have a lot of images to share!”

Jess wore a stunning Priscilla of Boston dress which was perfect for their vintage country style wedding.  Her rings, carried in little leather pouches, were originally Rob’s Grandmother’s and her vintage bracelet had previously been worn by the other women in Rob’s family on their wedding day, so it held a lot of sentimental significance.  Throughout their home were old family photos and antique treasures that really set the scene for the wedding day.

The ceremony seats were bales of hay with Jess’ baby quilts made by her Mother laid over them. The bridal party entered through the field with Jess’ old pup Jackson, looking so so proud in his bow-tie. The flowers were daisies and sunflowers and were set alonside gorgeous red gingham table clothes - perfect for the hot and sunny weather.  Many of the guests set up camp in a nearby field with vans and tents to make a weekend of the event.

In honour of Rob’s moustache many of his friends grew their own and the groomsmen bought stick ons that you could shape in different styles. Instead of a wedding cake these two ordered a table full of pies, which went down very well with the guests, “It was really hard to photograph them and not sneak a taste,” laughed the photographers. After the ceremony the party headed up the hill to the old red barn for some shelter from the heat and to take some portraits. “You have heard the famous saying don’t work with kids or animals – well we usually love working with both and the kids were fantastic it was the darn goats that couldn’t take the hint that it wasn’t their day!” continued Emmy & Aaron. ”One really wanted his picture taken, after he tasted a bridesmaid’s bouquet of course.  At first it was funny until I had to push him out of the way by his bottom, goats are stubborn.”

“We left the barn via tractor and at dusk the music started, the lanterns came on and man could these folks dance! I have never seen grannies with such moves, so so much fun.  Jess and Rob are so in love and their wedding day was perfect from beginning to end.  We know we will see them and Jackson, and probably the goat many more times in the future. At the end of the day we were still hot, a little sweaty, and so so grateful to our new friends Jess and Rob for sharing their sweet day with us!”

No, thanks for sharing it with us! How gorgeous is this?!

I utterly adore Ruth & Oliver’s beautiful orchard wedding! In fact as soon as photographer Abbye told me about the details I knew I’d be loving it. ”When I first met up with Ruth to talk about her wedding she brought along a huge glass jam jar. After talking over details Ruth pulled out the jar and told me “I know this might sound strange, but I just want to have jam jars everywhere…”  to others it might have sounded strange, but I totally got what she was going for.”

“On the day of the wedding Ruth had found not only hundreds of old glass jam jars but a variety of old type writers, chalk boards, and suitcases.  Many of the small details were found by Ruth at various thrift and antique stores around Vancouver.”

“Jon & I met in New York City, live in LA, and had our wedding in Toronto – where he grew up and I went to grad school,” Tamar, the bride, began. ”Our overall vision for the wedding was that it would be urban, comfortable, fun, and very “us”.  We love music and vintage stuff, so we definitely had some of that style infused but there are so many other weddings out there that are more “vintage” than ours.  We’re Rock ‘n Roll and unique because instead of trying to unnaturally contort ourselves and our wedding into a neat little category, we accepted the fact that we’re “all over the place” and went with it.  That meant having some traditional elements – a chuppah, wedding party, sit-down dinner, and bouquet toss – with other details that had special meaning to us regardless on whether or not it conformed to a wedding norm.”

“If there was one thing I was adamant about, it was taking the subway to the wedding (I’m a transportation planner) and making it easy for our guests to our wedding using transit.  So we picked a space right in the city that was only a couple of blocks from a busy subway station; even if it would be the only time in our lives that we “should” take a limo.  Both Jon & I wore “flair” on our backpacks throughout high school and college so we designed some of our own for the wedding with the Toronto & NY skylines.  There were video monitors throughout the venue, which are usually used for wedding slideshows.  Feeling awkward about our faces being broadcast throughout the night, we instead screened Andy Warhol’s “Screen Tests”, which are beautiful and intriguing.”

Tamar wore a short-sleeved, tea-length number by Dolly Couture (“I’m a grade-A klutz so really wanted a dress I wouldn’t faceplant on while walking down the aisle and really wanted sleeves”) and super-comfy green Butter shoes.

“So, maybe our wedding description would be hot mess or mish-mosh of cultures/traditions/styles” concluded the bride. “but we loved the atmosphere, had a blast doing our DIY projects (like the fabric covered table photo frames), and we smile every time we see the candid shots taken by our lovely photographer Emma McIntyre.  Our guests definitely were comfy and had fun… and most of them took the subway!”
