Pyucin & Dylan were married at Shelldance Orchid Gardens, Pacifica, CA. It was important to them to pick a venue that they didn’t have to decorate themselves too much, as Pyucin explained, “When picking a venue, our goal was to keep it sustainable. We didn’t want to purchase a bunch of decor that would be thrown away the next day, and we wanted to make sure that the site represented who we are. Thus, we went in search of a unique site that was within our budget, and we were so happy when we discovered this little green house. The Shelldance Gardens is a non-profit organization so we were happy to contribute to a good cause, and, on top of that, the site is so beautiful that it barely required any extra decoration. It is so green and earthy – it really reflected our love for nature and the outdoors.”

Pyucin wore two dresses, a white one from The Limited and a traditional Burmese Gown, which was handmade in Burma. “The search for the perfect dress was somewhat hectic,” the bride told me. “I initially had a vision of wearing gold for my wedding, wanting to look like a goddess in the greenhouse. However, ordering the dress from Burma proved to be a challenge because communicating my design concept from The States was much more difficult than I thought. For my first dress, I thought I gave very clear visuals and directions on what I wanted, but the dress that they made was nothing like I had in mind. It was a very generous gift, but I didn’t feel comfortable wearing the dress on my wedding day. In a panic, I took my mother’s Burmese gown and made my SECOND dress. While this gown was better than the first, I couldn’t find the shade of gold I wanted, or, for that matter, the type of fabric I wanted. So the second dress became my back up dress, and I still kept my search for the perfect dress going. The THIRD gown was a gown that my florist promised me after she heard about my lack of luck in the dress department. She told me that the dress was close enough to gold in shade and it was very traditional and beautiful. Unfortunately when I saw the gown I just knew that it was too much for me…it was too fancy, too traditional – in a nutshell, not me.”

“Then just 10 days before my wedding, a family friend sent me the FOURTH gown, which was actually a bridesmaid gown that her daughter had worn. I had seen this seen dress before through email, but when I finally saw it in person, I knew it was my dress. When I put it on, all my doubts were gone because it was just exactly what I had searching for all along. The search for the white dress wasn’t as difficult. I wanted something simple and within our budget. I was looking at both Anthropologie’s and J Crew’s bridal collections, but then I came across The Limited’s wedding selection. This dress was Dylan’s pick and when I tried it on, it was perfect too!”

The wedding was a real family effort, and nearly everyone involved in the wedding was a friend or family member. “With the exception of the caterers, everyone involved in this wedding was a friend or a friend of a friend, which made the wedding very intimate,” Pyucin continued. “Our dear friend Dustin Garrison provided the music for the wedding. Dustin was also one of our groomsmen. He worked so hard to make playlists that would reflect our taste, and he was up late into the evening the night before our wedding, incorporating all the songs that Dylan and I added at the last minute.”

“The flowers were done by a family friend, Ei Hlaing. She made me such a gorgeous bouquet, making sure to incorporate all the different colors from both of my dresses. She also made us the garlands of flowers we placed around our neck during the ceremony as tradition in Burma.”

“My make-up was done by one of my best friends – make-up artist extraordinaire Devon Nespica. Devon is a freelance makeup artist for Lancôme and we have been great friends since our freshmen year of college. I showed her the look I wanted to achieve, and she showed up with all her brushes and talent, making me feel incredibly beautiful. I am sure it was stressful day for her to be both make-up artist and bridesmaid, but she certainly didn’t show it.”

The DIY elements can also be seen throughout this wedding. “My sister Ohmar made the little pennants for our cake topper. She took a piece of yarn and sewed the little triangles of fabric to it. We then attached the yarn to two chopsticks. It was so simple and yet so adorable. My other sister Thirii made our little paper mache people as the other part of the cake topper. She added a green bow tie for Dylan and some flowers on my hair. This project only took us an hour at max.”

“The centerpieces for the cocktail tables were also very simple and sustainable. I went to the local library and found hard cover vintage books for decorations. It was a bit harder to find library books that didn’t have the plastic library stickers on them, but it still didn’t take too long. We then went to the goodwill and found small glasswares to place single stems of flowers in. The total décor didn’t cost more than $15. My sisters also helped with the finger print tree. Dylan and I didn’t want a traditional guestbook, and we have been seeing these finger print trees everywhere. We wanted ours to be a bit different, so asked my sister Ohmar to add two little birdies on the branches, and these birdies became the trademark for our wedding. The birds were incorporated into every little detail including the wedding programs, the invites and the wedding cd/ favors.”

Jaclyn & Joseph’s Californian wedding was certainly one with rock star credentials. With colours like bright pink, lime green, gold & cream all mashed together, the result was sure to be a spectacular one.

“My inspiration was to create a fairy tale wedding with and Alice in Wonderland twist”, explained Jaclyn. I” wanted both elements of shabby chic and edgy to blend together.  It came together beautifully.  Our wedding was breathtaking.  All of the details like the cake, flowers, craft tables and accessories made this wedding become extra stylish.  The food was a priority for me too and I think it had a rock star element as well.  We served a late night snack bar for our guests as well as a candy bar for take home favors.  Each of these elements made our wedding unique and memorable.”

“We had funky furniture for our reception that we rented from Blue Print Studios. This furniture was bold and bright and created a rock star feel for the reception.  A one of the best ideas that our guests loved was our photo booth.  It was the highlight of the late evening.  Our photo booth company had so many awesome accessories for people who wanted to get funky. From boas to beer glasses it was awesome.  I wish we could do it all over again!”

Jaclyn used her love of fashion to create her own, very unique, wedding day look, ” I LOVE fashion and design so much! I am a hair stylist and get to be creative everyday. When I was thinking of my dress I really wanted something special and cool.  My Mom and I went to Trudy’s in Campbell and found a beautiful dress that had lots of potential for me to get funky with. I bought this dress and with the help of a seamstress named Genine, we made magic.”

“My favorite color is pink and I wanted pink in my dress.  We decided to tear the bottom of the dress out and add lots of pink tulle. It was so much fun. My idea was to have 3 shaded of pink fading from light to dark and we made it happen. I felt like a rock star on my wedding day because of my dress!”

With her perfect dress she wore Christian Louboutin shoes and vintage jewellery.

“The Great Gatsby was my inspiration (minus the abundance of alcohol and affairs!)” bride Katelyn told me. ”Our style for our wedding was very glamorous, but not without that 1920′s quirk.  I like to think my style is quirky too, so this was perfect for our wedding day.  Plus, I love fashion and culture from the past!  Now, I could never justify spending as much money on a party as Jay Gatsby, but I still wanted my reception to be as unique and fun.  So, I replaced stuffy details like flowers with more lively ideas like bright peacock feathers, and I picked a beautiful venue (that happened to be brimming with vintage touches!) where everyone would feel at home – The Guild House, Bakersfield, CA.”

“The wonderful thing about our venue too is, unlike Gatsby’s money, ours is not wasted when spent at The Guild House.  Every person working at house is a volunteer, and the proceeds benefit the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic.  The multi-course meal was delicious, and I know Gatsby would have approved!  The overflowing wine was purchased at a local grocer, Green Frog Market, and was absolutely wonderful as well!”

Katelyn wore a Maggie Sottero gown (these will always hold a special place in my heart as I was a “Maggie bride” too!) and carried a vintage brooch bouquet (some were antiques that had been in the family for over 100 years!) instead of a floral one which she made herself. The bride’s Mother made all of the centerpieces, boutonnières and other bouquets from feathers instead of flowers.

I am a huge Feather Love Photography fan…HUGE. So when photographer Noa emailed me last week asking if I’d like to feature her newest wedding – I didn’t even have to look at the images to know that I would. Then, when she informed me that this intimate waterside wedding included a bride wearing an incredible vintage hat…complete with birds AND a vintage  green veil – well as you can imagine, I practically squealed with excitement.

Lisa & Theis were married in November on Malibu Pier, CA by followed by a small, informal dinner at Beachcomber Restaurant. “Our officiant was our dear friend Bill Handley, who is a literature professor at the University of Southern California,” expalined Lisa. “Bill sponsored Theis to come to the US (he is originally from Denmark) as a visiting scholar in 2009 and has been an important mentor to me in my academic career.”

Lisa wore a dress from J Crew which she had altered to add straps and of course that awesome bird hat! It was custom-made especially for Lisa by Brenda Waites Bolling, a milliner with a store at the Plaza Shops in New York City. She also added a unique green veil, which her Mother had found on eBay. It was dated back to 1831 and originally belonged to a woman named Elizabeth Litchfield, who received it as a gift from her “Aunt Ret,” according to the message inside the box that it came in.

“Theis and I met on Labor Day 2009 at a friend’s bbq,” Lisa told me. “We had both just moved to Los Angeles: I was beginning my PhD in Creative Writing and English Literature at USC, and Theis was a visiting scholar, at USC for six months to do research for his master’s thesis in Comparative Literature. I am originally from Chicago, but I had spent the previous six years in New York City; Theis is from northern Denmark, but had lived in Copenhagen for the previous six years. We fell deeply in love almost immediately, and became engaged in December 2009; Theis came home with me for Christmas and proposed to me in my childhood bedroom.”

“Theis’ visa ended in January, and he had to return to Denmark. For the next nine months, we conducted our love affair at a transatlantic long distance. We Skyped twice a day, at 9 AM and midnight California time, to cope with the nine-hour time difference. We also began the lengthy  process of bringing Theis back to the United States legally. I was lucky enough to be able to visit Denmark twice, in March and July, and meet Theis’s wonderful family and friends. Despite growing up very far from each other, Theis and I have found we have a remarkable number of things in common, and we attribute some of our similarity to how alike north Denmark and the upper American Midwest are. Both places have long, cold winters, beautiful vibrant summers, and a strong emphasis on family and community. We also share a great love of literature, cinema and music, and a devoted belief in the other’s talents.”

“In October 2010, Theis was finally able to return to the US on a fiance visa. We wanted our wedding to be intimate and beautiful, a relaxing day on which we could celebrate our greatest dream  coming true: being together. We had initially planned to have the ceremony in Griffith Park, but our desire to have dinner at Saddle Peak Lodge (saddlepeaklodge.com) made us decide to change the location to the Malibu Pier, a beautiful place that Theis and I had visited together several times in the first few months of our relationship. It turned out to be the perfect setting, very calm on the day before Thanksgiving. In the company of my parents and sister and our friend Bill Handley, we were married on the pier. We read the Walt Whitman poem “To A Stranger” to each other as vows.”

“Afterwards we had oysters and champagne with my family at the great  Beachcomber Restaurant on the pier. It was a beautiful day.”
