A Dia De Los Muertos, Punk Rock Wedding Shoot

This awesome punk inspired wedding was actually a faux-wedding – a photo shoot set up by stylist MMD Events, blogger Lauren of Every Last Detail and photographer’s Jeff & Anna Katherine of K&K Photography. They wanted to showcase some awesome alternative wedding styling and they certainly achieved that. I am totally smitten and almost a little upset that it isn’t a real wedding – this looks like the kind of party I want to go to!

“We put together this Punk inspiration shoot with the focus all around the *actual* definition of the word “punk”, courtesy of Every Last Detail’s Wedding Style Dictionary,” explained Lauren. “Pulling inspiration from the Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead), punk rock (of course), a little southern California “border-town-cool”, and rockabilly, we wanted the shoot to evoke what the actual “punk” lifestyle is. Our goal was to let brides know that punk can be pretty- not the cliche dark gothic look. We created a “punk” look that was pretty, colorful, and fun, just like the punk lifestyle is!”

The shoot took place at Tampa Armature Works Building in Florida and pretty much all the clothes were either thrifted or found very cheaply. This just goes to show that with a bit of imagination and creativity you CAN have a really Rock n Roll wedding without breaking the bank. I love this A LOT!

Mark & Fiona’s Snowy Steampunk Kinda Day

Mark & Fiona’s Steampunk inspired wedding took place at the Signet Library in Edinburgh in November. “We chose a Steampunk theme after Mark told Fiona her general day to day style was slightly Steampunk when he bought her a watch for Christmas in New York,” the couple explained. ”Fiona had not heard of it, but looked it up and realised it was exactly what she was in her choice of films, clothes and even her writing (she’s an aspiring novelist).”

Fiona didn’t want to be a traditional bride, so chose a mini top hat instead by House of Nines Design instead of a veil. She explained, “Before I even chose my dress I’d decided I wanted a hat and it had to be a  House of Nines Design Hat.  I had it made specifically to my colours and my specification.  Trisha was a real pleasure to work with and a great help, sending me various samples to chose from.  Trisha is based in San Francisco and has previously made hats for Dita Von Teese, amongst others.” The bride’s dress was by Ian Stuart. She also wore handmade shoes from Beretrun Design and gloves byMetamorphDK on Etsy.

The couple also didn’t use any traditional wedding music and instead chose some of their favourite songs for the  ceremony. Music from Spirited Away and Stardust accompanied the couple’s recessional and processional and Led Zepplin’s Stairway To Heaven played on harp during the signing of the register. 

Finally, Fiona made all the women’s favours which were flavoured lip balms.  She had lots of fun the months before experimenting making different flavours, colours and styles and she said they were actually very easy to make.  Mark chose Lego key rings for the men’s favours.

Polly & Stuart’s Wartime Wedding

Polly & Stuart’s wartime inspired wedding was held in a marquee in Polly’s parent’s back garden. “We love vintage style from the 1930′s-1960′s. We wanted to incorporate our love of 1950′s Rock n Roll into our wedding and combine it with the aesthetic of a wartime garden party,” explained the bride. ”We furnished our marquee and gentleman’s smoking room with pieces of furniture, decor and paintings from our home. I can safely say that I don’t think that anyone else has ever had a 1940′s waxworks dummy in their wedding marquee! We also wrote our own ‘hymn’ for our wedding service. We put sticks of rock on all the tables.We combined stylistic references and it worked- We backed the stage with 1950′s style working men’s club red curtains and had Victorian birdcages stuffed with ivy and pearls suspended from the ceiling. We turned my parents’ summer house into the ‘gentlemen’s smoking room’ complete with pipes, silk smoking jackets and a drinks cabinet.  We had our dog Enid Mouse as our whippet of honour. Our magnificent nautical cake complete with Marzipan octopus tentacles was by Annie at Yummy Nice. The cake was topped by a sculpture of us in a boat made by my husband Stuart. We didn’t want to be constrained with any particular rules!”

Polly wore a 1930′s vintage dress which she bought from Elizabeth Avey in London, which she then had embellished by Vikki Lafford who made a beautiful art deco shoulder piece for the dress. The bride’s reception dress was a 1950′s wedding dress which was purchased for just £70 from a dusty rail at the back of a costume shop in Manchester. Her gorgeous shoes were from Emmy and her hair piece was made by Rock n Roll Bride favourite, Flo & Percy.

For the centrepieces and reception decor, the couple hired vintage crockery from A Most Curious Party. The tea cup displayed were a DIY effort by the bride’s Mum and friends. “For our afternoon drinks reception and dinner we had the wonderful DJ 78 who played a divine selection of tunes on his gramophones and he went down an absolute storm!” continued Polly. ”Our rockabilly band were the fabulous Rhythm Aces who kept the dance floor filled all night with great 50′s Rock n Roll. The music at our ceremony was performed by our musician friends Michelle and Susie. Michelle performed on our 1870′s American parlour organ which we transported (with the help of 4 very strong men) from our bedroom in London to our wedding venue in Suffolk!”

Monique & John’s Elegant Halloween Themed Etsy Wedding

When a wedding as gorgeous as this one hits blog-land, you just know the wedding blogs are going to be fighting over who gets to feature it. I’m not one to boast, but I’m pretty chuffed that photographer Galaxie Andrews  chose Rock n Roll Bride to showcase this amazingly stunning wedding. The bride is Monique, the uber talented designer and owner of Rock n Roll Bride favourite, Ouma Clothing, and her marriage to John really is a match made in Rock n Roll heaven. The details of this wedding are killing me…and don’t even get me started on her dress. Epic isn’t even the word!

I got chatting to Monique all about their elegant Halloween themed wedding inspiration. “John & I wanted everything handmade so we turned to etsy. It was important to us that our wedding felt authentic, minimally “produced” and intimate.  We also thought it was important to work with local vendors and to include some of our favorite restaurants. Pumpkin has to be my favorite flavor this time of year, so it was so fun coming up with a menu that included pumpkin cupcakes, empenadas, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin tamales (yes these are amazing!) and pumpkin beer.”

“John actually chose our Halloween theme on a whim.  Once he mentioned it, I was instantly inspired.  I saw prominent visions of pumpkins, October weather in Arizona, masks and elegant costumes.  Arizona is gorgeous in October.  We wanted the wedding to be held in downtown Phoenix (our city is awesome!). We knew we wanted a raw, brick venue and a friend mentioned the Ice House. It was an instant “YES, that’s it” moment.  The Ice House was extremely inspiring with it’s roofless cathedral – perfect for a ceremony, the column room which is set up like an art gallery, we felt this would be perfect for cocktail hour and a nice place to display our engagement photos. Basically, it was a blank canvas, so we could do whatever we wanted. It was actually used as a place where they manufactured ice in the early 1900’s.”

“Our inspiration came from the holiday itself, we wanted to create a rustic/festive type event – the exact opposite of how you might imagine a Halloween wedding to be. I think we have a pretty talented group of friends and family.  My brother and his friends played the music and instead of a traditional wedding dance we had a soul train line-up and we busted our old school James Brown moves.  Our friend Andrew designed the save-the-dates and invites (he hand stamped all 125 himself!), my assistant and great friend Xappa designed my headpiece and the women in my family hooked it up with the most delicious treats ever AND of course Galaxie the gorgeous person behind the camera was there to document it all.  We are grateful and honored to be amongst such brilliant company.!

Monique hand made her dress the night before the wedding (!) She also designed, hand dyed and made all of the bridesmaid dresses herself.

Sugar & Spice & All Things Nice – New Wedding Trends for 2011

If there’s one thing that makes a wedding blogger’s heart go a-flutter, it’s lots of lovely details – gorgeous ideas that you, dear reader, can sneakily steal for your own weddings. So, when I was sent this utterly gorgeous rustic/Rock n Roll (who says the two can’t merge!?) it took me all of about 30 seconds to say yes to featuring it.

Moustache cookies (and shoes!), cute typography, mis-matched bunting, multi coloured florals a-plenty and a cake covered in different coloured bow ties (seriously dying over here.) Oh yes, this blogger certainly approves!

Eager to share some new trends for 2011, the team behind this shoot wanted to add a new dimension to some of the ever-popular wedding details that don’t seem to be going anywhere just yet (moustaches anyone?!) “We made sure to incorporate all of this year’s trends including bow ties, paper garlands, barn weddings, and moustaches,” Sugar & Fluff, the stylists behind the shoot explained. ”We even exhausted the balloon idea with a dress made of them! Each balloon was blown up and then popped to give an effect that the dress was popped by a fork!  Let me tell you it was not easy making.”

“Our colors were very vibrant and based off of a beautiful bow necklace found at Anthropologie. We also used bow ties as a major theme in the shoot…as you can tell our cake had hand-made bow-ties tapering down! To complete the look, we found some amazing bow tie rings at a flea market. We were even able to scrounge up a moustache ring! Our bouquet was filled with all kinds of amazingness of color and pretty including some doorknobs and birds. Finally, we managed to find a chandelier with ice cream cones! They were perfect because they matched our color palette to the tee.”

“To top it all off, our amazing florist had the most perfect ranch in mind to shoot at. It fit everything so well. The horses, the greenery, and haystacks were absolutely perfect.”

I think you’ll agree that this shoot is nothing short of awesome, and if this is what 2011 weddings are going to look like then I can’t wait!
