I fell in love with Rebecca & Morgan’s quirky wedding as soon as it landed in my inbox and I’m honoured and super excited to share it with you today…especially because they used some of my favourite suppliers (including Lisa Jane Photography and Vivien of Holloway) and well as some of the DIY project that I’ve posted on my blog. Yey!

Rebecca told me all about their fabulous wedding. “Morgan and I grew up only 8 miles apart and even went to the same secondary school; in fact he was in my sister’s year in school. However we didn’t meet each other until April 2009, believe it or not he sent me a facebook friendship request, we went for a date and a crazy year later I asked him to be my fiancé. I even commissioned a ring from the quirky designer Amber France as a surprise, he said yes (sigh of relief on my side). Our daughter Efa was born and things went on the back burner and then 7 months later on my birthday he gave me a beautiful blue opal ring, it was like a green light!”

“So we started chatting about our ideas and planning. We’re both artist so we knew our wedding would be different and would have to truly represent our characters and what we love in life. We had originally planned to have the wedding in 2013 and Morgan wanted to have it in North Wales where we’re from but things had been hard of late and I couldn’t justify spending all that money just on one day. We just had to make the difficult decision to leave London, which meant leaving all our friends and our way of life behind, so I suggested to Morgan let’s get married before we go. In the end London was where we met and where Efa was born and that was the start of our 7 weeks to plan a wedding.”

“We both wanted something fun, relaxed and most importantly something that was us. We choose our local Town hall for the ceremony and got married on a Friday. Morgan chose his local pub for the lunch, Pembury Tavern and I found The Royal Inn on the Park and rented the private room upstairs for the evening party. It was all based in the borough of Hackney where we use to live. We had a strict budget so DIY was a must but being creative types and having arty friends to get involved made it fun not a chore.”

“We did so many DIY decorations but our favourite projects were the recycled paper flowers that I got from Rock n Roll Bride. I made 57 of them and even used old vintage flower arranging books to make them.  I also enjoyed making the felt flower button holes/brooches for the wedding party; I made Morgan a sunflower to match my bouquet. Plus the badges we gave as favours, Morgan and I spent hours making around 250 badges from vintage photography, anatomy, flower arranging books which Morgan uses for his art. He purchased a badge machine couple of months before for our etsy shop DyfalDonc and it just made sense to use it for the favours.”

“I knew I was never going to wear a traditional wedding dress, I never wear white or cream and I love colour, so I choose cobalt/royal blue. I spent hours searching on the internet for a dress and end up buying my shoes first from Irregular Choice, I was in love. With the 50’s style in my shoes I knew I had to find a dress to match and went to Vivien of Holloway. After trying on a couple of dresses, even one in ivory for my Mam but not liking any, my friend Nia found it hanging on the rack hidden between other dresses the only halter neck circle dress in blue, in my size. Happy days.  She even bought it for me as my wedding present. I added French blue and royal blue petticoats underneath, made a forget-me-not felt brooch, bought a chiffon ivory bolero from Sew Cool Creations on ebay and vintage porcelain forget-me-not flower earrings at a bargain price of £2. To finish the look my friend Roxi who is also a burlesque dancer did my hair and make-up and created my wonderful headpiece.”

“We didn’t have a strict theme but we would say our wedding was 50’s, Sunflowers, Italian dinning, Badges, Vintage, Blue, Scrabble, Beer Mats, Cakes, Reggae, Welsh maps, Yorkshire puds, Curly Wurly’s, Moustaches, Retro, Bunting, Yellow, Ska and so much more.”

“The advice we would give to other bride and grooms-to-be that are planning a quick wedding on a strict budget is to make lots and lots of lists!! DIY is the way to go and get yourselves a good photographer. We’re so grateful to Kat that we found Lisa Jane Photography on Rock n Roll Bride; she’s a lovely person and a fantastic photographer. Thumbs up all round.”

“We had a brilliant time planning and organising and creating for the wedding, from the cake and sweet table, to searching for the vintage and retro fabrics for our bunting, to spending hours making our playlist for the evening party to designing our invitations. But at the end of the day it’s our friends and family that make it extra special so we just want to say thank you to them for sharing it with us.”

Clare & Paul’s fabulous seaside wedding had a whole lot of DIY love and the bride told me all about it, “I had such a fabulous time organising our wedding.  I usually work as a community artist and I often work on exciting glittering and decorative carnival costumes, so this was an opportunity for me to bring some sparkle into our day!”

“Paul and I wanted our wedding to be special to us and to reflect our personalities and our interests in art and music. I wanted to be part of the designing and making of as many different parts of the wedding as I could. We love colour so when my daughters chose their ivory and black beautiful dresses I added hot pink and red to the mix.  Although there is so much to do and you can go on a mad spending spree, we set a budget (which we slightly exceeded – oops!) but I loved every minute of it.”

The wedding reception took place at The Hayling Island Sailing Club in Portsmouth. “Our guests arrived on a red double decker London bus,” Clare continued. “My two daughters and my niece were my bridesmaids, they had their hair in Audrey Hepburn inspired buns with beautiful orchids and Gloriosa in their hair to match our bouquets.  I wore an Ian Stuart asymmetrical dress.  We arrived at the ceremony in Trevor Howard’s (Brief encounter) beautiful red alvis sports tourer and a candy pink london taxi!”

When I first saw Clare & Paul’s wedding, my eyes were immediately drawn to their incredibly unique table numbers, crafted out of vintage books. I had to know more! Can you believe the bride made these herself?! “We used paper cuttings from vintage books to decorate our table plan and our table numbers,” she said. “We scattered plectrums around on the table with our names and the wedding date on. I made a huge table plan using a large frame I had resprayed and cut out leaves and origami roses made by Paul.  I made my table numbers with a set of 7 vintage books in which I made little scenes of Paul and my life! My shop on Etsy ohlalovely is selling/taking commissions for these books if anyone wants some made.”

Incredible huh? I don’t know about you, but I’m off to check out Clare’s Etsy store right now!

“Colin and I have been together for almost 7 years and thought it was about time that we tied the knot,” read the email I received from newlywed Amanda last week. “Unlike most women, I don’t think I ever really dreamed of what my wedding would be like so I didn’t really know where to start when it came to the planning. I’m a complete control freak and knew that I wanted to make and take part in creating as much for the wedding that I could so I started looking for inspiration on various websites and in books.”

“We knew that we wanted a few things for certain: a great photographer (or 2) to capture every grin, tear and laugh; a sweetie buffet; lots of handmade touches; fairy lights (and lots of them!); cupcakes; photo booth; a black and white wedding with splashes of colour; a hand fastening ceremony; confetti and sparklers.”

From these simple ideas they created the stunning wedding you see on these pages! “Colin was really eager to have a hand fastening ceremony and we both wanted to involve our family in the ceremony as much as possible,” continued the bride. “It was so important to us that we showed our love and appreciation for our family and this was the perfect way to not only add a splash of colour but it was also to show them exactly how much they mean to us.”

“I am lucky enough to have a small business called Hungry Designs and through this I have made a lot of wonderful creative friends. This made the task of making my wedding handmade and fun on a budget possible. My wedding dress (and the bridesmaid’s dresses) was created by the oh-so-talented Rebecca Cobbing from Rebecca Cobbing Couture. Rebecca is a truly spectacular designer who is also a dear friend. Rebecca and I discussed what dress I wanted in great detail and Rebecca came up with the design. It was out of this world and even included some of Rebecca’s trademark black matte satin material at the base of the dress. I really wanted the bridesmaid’s dresses to be black. I really see little point in having the two dresses designed for them to only be worn once – the intention was that Steph and Cat could wear the dresses again and again and not just at the wedding.”

“The origami flowers were all made by my very talented friend Gill from Catamation. Gill was so helpful and knew exactly what I wanted. She folded over 200 flowers for the wedding and these flowers were used for the bouquets, hair accessories and the table centres. The table settings and centers were a mix of colour, vintage and brightly painted candle sticks were dotted around in the middle of the tables and tea lights littered the tables with mood lighting. The napkins were folded into big white bows and the guests were given either a bag of hand sewn jelly beans or homemade strawberry lip balm – that was made by myself and Colin’s Aunty Jeannie.”

“Colin has a massive sweet tooth and I love to bake so we really wanted to have a sweetie buffet at the reception. We thought this would be the perfect setting for the colourful cupcakes and cutting cake. The cutting cake was rainbow sponge in the middle – perfecting tying the hand fastening ceremony into the reception. The cake topper was hand drawn by me and laser cut from wood and the cake bunting was found on Etsy. The paper bags were stamped with a rubber stamp that was especially carved for us by Kozue and the vintage cake server and forks were stamped with our wedding date and Just Married as well as Mr and Mrs – these were ordered from Wooden Hive.”

“Our wedding was relatively small – with only 48 guests attending both the ceremony and reception. This meant they all spent lots of time in the photo booth. This was a great last minute addition to the wedding and meant that not only were the guests able to busy themselves between meals but also meant that out guestbook was filled with hilarious photos from the booth. There is absolutely nothing that I would change about the wedding. Everything was perfect and the guests had a ball, when they weren’t on the dance floor they were in the photo booth or enjoying some sweets and wine. When looking back at the photos it really does bring back all of the feelings from the day. It was the best night of our lives and we couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

Sarah & Aaron were married at the bride’s Grandparent’s farm in Lake Ariel, PA. “Our wedding could not have been done as well as it was without the selfless help of our family and friends,” the bride told me. “People were always volunteering their time to help us out in any way they could. And in that way our wedding day was not just about me and Aaron, but a celebration of our friends and family as well. Our community not only came around us in support of our marriage the day of the wedding, but were also a big part in making it the beautiful day that it was!”

Their rustic vintage theme was set by the venue, but continued with the DIY elements the couple put into their day like the fabric garlands and tin can lanterns. “We didn’t want one of those cookie cutter weddings that you go to a store to pick out and purchase every little thing. No printed napkins, no machined decorations–we wanted a hand and a heart to create our wedding instead, ” Sarah continued.

“So naturally, as an artist, I decided to design our wedding! From the invitations to the fabric banners, there was love infused into every piece. I kept the decorations simple to compliment the natural beauty around us. The barn on the property has been there since my Grandmother can remember (this is where she grew up), and is beautiful with age. Once it was cleaned out by some willing friends and family, it’s beauty spoke for itself. All I did was add a few simple fabric banners and tin can lanterns (with led candles of course!).”

“The tent was adorned with more fabric banners, fabric flower garlands and beautiful flower arrangements that filled the antique bottles I found in my Grandparent’s attic.  I also found antique root beer and milk boxes, wheelbarrows, and other things to add to the rustic feel. So as you can see, our wedding was filled with things from the past that stood the test of time–mini testaments to the way things can last when they are cared for. Just like a marriage.”

The ceremony was a very special one, and during the reception the couple planted a tree on their Grandparent’s land. “I really loved the tree planting ceremony during the reception. Aaron gave a wonderful speech explaining its purpose (how like a tree a marriage needs nurturing and love to grow…) It also gave us a few moments “away” from everyone and I got to whisper to him how handsome I thought he looked.”

Launched by cake designer Sarah Spangle in January 2011, Leeds based Yestercake pride themselves on their high quality bespoke service.

“The idea of Yestercake was born when I got married in November 2009 and found, like many other aspects of the wedding industry, there wasn’t much scope to get a cake that wasn’t off- the-peg” Sarah told me.  ”Like with all other aspects of our wedding we didn’t just want to pick something out that didn’t really reflect us.  In the end I decided to go down the DIY route. It had mixed results (!) but it reconfirmed to me how baking was one of my greatest passions and inspired me to take the plunge to retrain in cake decoration and design and to build upon the idea of starting my own business.”

Yestercake HQ is based in Leeds, UK and Sarah is keen to invite potential clients to her workshop for consultations for bespoke cake designs. “Like all good wedding vendors I believe in trying to give the couple advice on what they want and guidance on what will work,” Sarah continued. “I absolutely adore the bespoke part of what I do and want to create an individual edible one-off for all my clients! As I’m also a food history and vintage enthusiast I really believe the cake is a really important aspect of the day. To me it is as important as the dress and should be reflective of the couples tastes, wedding theme and personality – it should be the perfect accessory to your wedding!”
