Cake Toppers

I’ve featured the gorgeous Paula & Teddy before. Their pre-wedding shoot made my heart sing but their actual wedding blows everything out of the water! Blue Point Bay Chapel played host to their intimate ceremony and the reception that followed was held at the pool side of the same venue. Paula wore a Jessica McClintock gown with stunning Balenciaga shoes and a handmade veil.

The personal touches came in spades at this wedding which the bride worked tirelessly on. Their super cute lego cake topper came from etsy, and Teddy’s boutonniere and the moustache and bow tie favours were handmade by the Bride (she made over 80 of them!) The guest book and stationery were designed by the groom. The guests even took home vintage popcorn wrappers (filled with Indonesian snacks that the couple had both enjoyed since childhood) and Polaroid pictures. The chic black and white theme was seen throughout their day.

“We didn’t want our wedding to be normal,” the couple told me. “We love detailed diy stuff. Rock n Roll Bride gave us so many ideas. We love Rock n Roll Bride! It really gave us the confidence and inspiration to plan our retro black and white stripy diy wedding in Bali.

Michelle & Sterling were married at St Barnabas church, in the middle of the Aussie bush. Their reception that followed took place at Upper Landowne Community Hall. Michelle’s parents had been married at the same church and hall 35 years ago so it was really special to them to also be married here. The importance of involving their families was continued throughout the planning process. “My mum and Grandmother did so much work ,” said Michelle. “Mum organised all the catering which was done by the local church that my Grandmother belongs to and all of the table cloths, linen napkins were hand crocheted by my Grandma. My sister made the guest book sign and we all decorated the hall and set the tables and did the flower arranging in 30 silver tea pots that I bought over time from eBay ! They looked awesome and totally fitted with the romantic, quirky theme. We even found a home for the 80 massive paper tissue pom poms we made.”

Michelle wore a dress by Pallas Bride, Sydney, “I choose this dress as I wanted something kinda “bridey” but with a twist – I loved the lace and the plunging neckline as well as the sequence details.” To give her bridal look a Rock n Roll twist, Michelle added purple shoes by Paul Dane and a handmade bespoke headpiece by Suzy O’Rourke. She asked her bridesmaids to choose their own dress. Their looks were tied together with their headpieces which she made herself with fabric and her trusty hot glue gun!

“I guess we did things differently to other weddings by making the whole preparation also part of the wedding,” concluded the bride. “Everyone was involved in it. We always say it takes a village to raise a child and it’s also true of a wedding I think . We just had fun with it. Our Bridal waltz was just us dancing together crazy like the way we met …  just fun, energy and love.”

Jackie & John’s massively colour-filled wedding makes my heart sing with joy. Any couple who can’t settle on one colour scheme and go for all the colours is awesome in my book. Those bridesmaids – oh yes!

The wedding took place at 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky – an art gallery space that is quite minimalist so not to take away from the art on the walls. The couple let the venue do what it does best and didn’t worry about adding their own decorations. “Decor was not a big priority to us because I respected the venue’s integrity on it’s own” Jackie told me. ”I’m an art history major so it was great to find a venue that reflected that. Plus, 99% of our guests were from out of town, so it was nice to have everything – the ceremony, reception and after party – all under one roof. Everyone partied until they had to cut the band off and then simply staggered upstairs to bed. More than a few out of town guests thanked us for that. I can not speak highly enough of the staff there. We had taken our party upstairs to a couple of hotel rooms and the hotel was getting a couple noise complaints, but instead of telling us to keep it quiet and kill the party, they opened up a meeting room space down in the basement and let us bring our own food, drinks and iPod speakers in and stay as late as we want. My husband and I finally crawled away to our room at 3:30 am or so but I’m told people were in the meeting room until well past sunrise.”

A DIY wedding with Holga images? Oh hell yeah baby…

Shelly & Jeff had a wedding that perfectly epitomised them. From the turquoise and orange pom poms and the personalised ‘All You Need is Love’ M&Ms to their friend playing ‘Blackbird’ by The Beatles and Dr Seuss’ ‘Oh The Places We Will Go’ as gifts. From the sparrow salt & pepper shakers as a cake topper and succulents as centrepieces to the their customised ‘lunchboxes’ by Pink Avocado..oh yes yes yes! Shelly’s beautiful dress was by Linda Asaf and I love it all!
