“It’s like raaaain, on your wedding day…”

While a wash-out may be some couple’s worst nightmare, Michelle and her fiance Trevor certainly made the most of their rainy South African wedding…in fact they rocked that rain like I’ve never seen before! The wellies, multiple white umbrellas and incredible backlit portraits made me always wish my wedding had been so damp!

The wedding was held at the bride’s parent’s wedding venue, Willowvale Weddings. “6 months before our wedding date the reception hall was just a cow shed,” the bride told me. “In those 6 months my parents bashed and built the most fantastic space. There was still paint drying on the day – nothing like a bit of pressure!”

Continuing on from the ‘DIY’ venue (which is now open for all weddings) the day had a handmade and homespun feel. As Michelle explained, “We didn’t want the usual cookie cutter, draped-hall wedding, I was quite happy to elope but Trevor convinced me that I’d be happier if I shared the day with our closest friends and family (he was right). So we tried to make it as unique as possible, my Mom made my dress from pictures of dresses I sent her and it was EXACTLY what I wanted.”

“Our guests sat on hay bales for the ceremony, we didn’t have hymns (each of our sisters read a blessing instead) and we had a handfasting ceremony within our Christian ceremony.  Our men and maids didn’t matchy matchy.  We had a fingerprint tree instead of a guestbook, our table flowers were arranged in giant teapots, we both made speeches (he read an excerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit about being made real and made me cry), our friends collected baby food jars for us to put candles in everywhere and the bunting made everything more fun!”

“Following wedding blogs gave me the guts to stick to my guns about some things (and made me realize that other things are just unimportant!) As well as helped me to show my Mom visually what I was trying to achieve from 9000km away!”

Sarah & Aaron were married at the bride’s Grandparent’s farm in Lake Ariel, PA. “Our wedding could not have been done as well as it was without the selfless help of our family and friends,” the bride told me. “People were always volunteering their time to help us out in any way they could. And in that way our wedding day was not just about me and Aaron, but a celebration of our friends and family as well. Our community not only came around us in support of our marriage the day of the wedding, but were also a big part in making it the beautiful day that it was!”

Their rustic vintage theme was set by the venue, but continued with the DIY elements the couple put into their day like the fabric garlands and tin can lanterns. “We didn’t want one of those cookie cutter weddings that you go to a store to pick out and purchase every little thing. No printed napkins, no machined decorations–we wanted a hand and a heart to create our wedding instead, ” Sarah continued.

“So naturally, as an artist, I decided to design our wedding! From the invitations to the fabric banners, there was love infused into every piece. I kept the decorations simple to compliment the natural beauty around us. The barn on the property has been there since my Grandmother can remember (this is where she grew up), and is beautiful with age. Once it was cleaned out by some willing friends and family, it’s beauty spoke for itself. All I did was add a few simple fabric banners and tin can lanterns (with led candles of course!).”

“The tent was adorned with more fabric banners, fabric flower garlands and beautiful flower arrangements that filled the antique bottles I found in my Grandparent’s attic.  I also found antique root beer and milk boxes, wheelbarrows, and other things to add to the rustic feel. So as you can see, our wedding was filled with things from the past that stood the test of time–mini testaments to the way things can last when they are cared for. Just like a marriage.”

The ceremony was a very special one, and during the reception the couple planted a tree on their Grandparent’s land. “I really loved the tree planting ceremony during the reception. Aaron gave a wonderful speech explaining its purpose (how like a tree a marriage needs nurturing and love to grow…) It also gave us a few moments “away” from everyone and I got to whisper to him how handsome I thought he looked.”

Michelle & Deborah’s touching ceremony was one of the main reasons I wanted to share their wedding with you all today. Quite apart from all the beautiful and individual  details the couple put into their day, the readings and poems that they selected for their ceremony made this wedding really special and signified their relationship perfectly.

They chose Shakespears Sonnet 116, a section from the children’s book  “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard and “I carry your heart with me” by E.E Cummings for their vows. Finally in order to include the fight for equality they read the Massachusetts ruling on marriage. They thought it was so simple and basic and spelled out what marriage meant to them in a perfect way.

“FROM GOODRIDGE V DEPT OF HEALTH (Mass. 2003): Marriage is a vital social institution. The exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support; it brings stability to our society. Without question, civil marriage enhances the “welfare of the community.” It is a “social institution of the highest importance.” Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family… Because it fulfils yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition….It is undoubtedly for these concrete reasons, as well as for its intimately personal significance, that civil marriage has long been termed a ‘civil right’.”

“We just really liked the definitions of marriage,” Michelle explained. “Again, we chose our readings because they all held a significance in what marriage should be regardless of legal status (strong and steadfast, childlike at times, a basic human right, always honest, the beauty of partnership).”

The couple had been lucky enough to spend some time in Paris so chose a Romantic Parisian theme for their wedding. The croquembouche (cake) was a nod to their love of French culture and flamboyant presentation. They even cut it with the traditional sword.

“They choose the perfect location – the elegant Astin Mansion – they have did the table flowers and catering,” photographer Katherine O’Brien continued. “Michelle said that Deborah thought that spending money on bouquets was silly when they just die a few days after so she told her she could make her a bouquet that would never wilt and thus her fabric/book flower project began. She got the newspaper flowers Etsy and mixed with her own. They also used Etsy for their bridal party gifts – each attendant got a cool vintage pinup flask and the cute cloth love brides were from The Girl in Yellow. The main wedding cake looked like a stack of books from Shakespeare to the Merry Wives of Windsor.

“Instead of favors for their guests the couple made a donation to the Pride Community Center. It  is their area’s first LGBT community gathering place and is providing a much needed resource to youth and adults in our area. At first they thought they we were going to donate to the Human Rights Campaign, but realized it was more important to give locally, and see their donation help within their own community.”

Athena & Branden are like old friends of the Rock n Roll Bride wedding blog. I featured their gorgeous whimsical engagement session back in the Summer so I’m really pleased to share their stunning wedding today too.

The Bride wore a Nicole Miller dress with a dramatic vintage-inspired necklace that she made herself from lace. She kept her look unique with a beautiful puffball veil from Toni Federici and a bow from Forever 21. Her earrings were also DIY – made by a friend for her.

Branden kept his look contemporary with a twist, with his suit and bow tie combo from Brooks Brothers and Nike trainers.

Their reception décor was mostly a DIY effort. The couple used vintage suitcases as a cake stand, a typewriter as  a guest book and lots of personal touches like the cute custom cake topper (complete with Antena’s tattoos!) to make their reception perfect for them.

What a fabulously stylish couple!

Be sure to also check out their fabulous (seriously fabulous!!) wedding film after the ‘jump’ too. I LOVE IT!

Steve & Kelly’s November wedding took place in Florida at Omni Orlando Resort. The theme for the day was butterflies, in memorial of Kelly’s Papa who had passed away 5 years earlier. As well as wearing the bride wearing a butterfly bracelet and flowers in her hair, the couple released butterflies in his memory.

At the reception the couple filled the room with details that meant a lot to them – fish in the centrepieces for good luck and tattoo details becuase they are both heavilty tattooed. Each table was also given a name that meant a lot to the couple.

“Tattoos are something steve and I both enjoy and wanted to make it a part of our wedding,” explained Kelly. ”We knew we didn’t want a traditional wedding, but still wanted to keep it elegant. Our planner and our vendors all made our vision become a reality and we have gotten nothing but great feedback from our friends and family. Everyone saw our personality in ever detail of our wedding.”
