Aaron & Jay’s Sushi-Loving Rock n Roll Wedding

When I read the email that Aaron & Jay send to their photographer when they enquired about her shooting their wedding I was smitten. I wonder why huh?!

“I love your photos and would be thrilled if you could shoot our wedding on July 17th of this year. We are planning a super fun, little bit retro and a little bit country wild and crazy with a whole lot of DIY elements party here in Vancouver. ps. I found you through Rock n Roll Bride (the best wedding blog in the world).”

Yeah…flattery really will get you everywhere. Aaron & Jay’s wedding is also completely stupendously rad …always helps when you want to get your wedding featured on these here pages!

The couple were married outside The Old Hastings Mill Store, which was one of the only buildings in Vancouver to survive the Great Fire of 1886. It is now located near Jericho Beach in Kitsilano.  They were married with a view of the harbour, the boats and the mountains – bliss. For their reception they headed to Cambrian Hall.

The couple’s very first date was at Nikkyo Sushi on Main Street in Vancouver which just happened to be around the corner from their reception venue. So, for some fun wedding day pictures, the couple and their photographer Lisa headed out to have some sushi & beer. The couple also served sushi from Nikkyo Sushi at their reception!

Aaron wore a custom made dress from Dolly Couture and accessories from Farmer’s Daughter on Etsy. To compliment her outfit, her bridesmaids wore polkadot 1950s style dresses and they all had different coloured petticoats underneath. How gorgeous is that?!

A Sunday Kind of Love – Gareth’s Wedding Plans

This is totally sad so you’ll have to forgive me. Also, it’s 6:30am and I’ve been awake for 3 hours. I don’t know why and maybe my mind is going a bit haywire but I just came up with this ridiculous idea for a blog post so I’m going to run with it.

I was watching ‘Don’t Tell the Bride’ with Gareth the other day (for those of you who aren’t in the UK, it’s a TV programme where basically the groom plans the whole wedding – he picks and organises literally everything - the venue, the dress, the flowers, the invitations, the theme - it’s brilliant!)

I bet lots of couples do this as they watch this show, but Gareth & I got chatting about what he’d do if he had to plan our wedding. Now I’ve either subliminally trained him well or he’s been paying close attention to the blog and just not telling me but OMG his ideas were quite frankly awesome. As soon as he said “short vintage dress from Fur Coat No Knickers (yes he named the shop!), mismatched colours, a kind of summer meadow theme” I was sold! So much in fact that I totally want to marry him all over again and have him plan the whole thing.

Anyway…I thought I’d make a little montage of his vision. Can I just make it clear that I am aware, as someone who got married 2 and half years ago, how incredibly sad this is but I kinda wanted to share it all with you. Happy Sunday Lovin’ people!

Jenny Packham & The Roaring 20′s

Jenny Packham and 1920′s styling was the order of the day for Emma & Adam’s wedding at Chewton House just outside Bristol. In fact Emma’s Jenny Packham ‘Joy’ dress provided the inspiration for the whole wedding!

The wedding theme came about by chance as when Emma visited Wedding Days in Cheltenham bridal shop to look for a potential wedding dress. She hadn’t had much luck in her search up til then but luckily for her, a promotions representative from Jenny Packham happened to be visiting the store that day and had a few “one off” dresses for Wedding Days to show case for one day only. The last dress she tried on was “Joy”. It was exactly what she had been looking for. The bride then came up with the idea to theme the whole wedding about the 1920′s/30′s style of the dress.

“We also wanted the day to be as much fun as possible and for it to stick in the memories of all the guests for long after the day had finished” the bride explained. “We asked all our guests to dress up in the style of the period so that along with the work we’d done with the venue, the florist, the car, the cake, the hair, the make up and the live band we had something that captured the roaring 20′s.”

Nathan & Marianna’s DIY-Fabulous New York Wedding

Oooh I am so excited about Nathan & Marianna’s diy-fabulous New York wedding (although this is doing nothing to quench my desire to sign 2 weeks off and jet off to NYC!)

The couple got married at St. Luke’s Church and then had their reception at Sea Cliff Yacht Club. ”Both are in the small one square mile town (22  miles from NYC) where I grew up in Long Island, NY” Marianna told me. The couple only splurged on the things that really mattered to them - one of them being the band that played their reception “This was probably the best splurge (and only) of the wedding.  I highly recommend getting a live band, we had a great fun dancing ALL night long” the bride explained. ”I thought we were just going to go the ipod shuffle route, but was convinced that the band makes the party and to have one.  It was great advice, and is probably (most definitely) true.”

Marianna also put huge effort info her outfit to make it perfect for her – second best was not an option. She found her perfect dress, knew it was the one and went for it! Everything she wore had meaning and thought behind it.

“I am not sure who made my dress, I never even looked at the tag.  I had to buy a dress off the rack since I had a minor dress problem in June.  Strut bridal is a plus sized bridal store, it was great and the owner is fabulous.  If you live in Arizona (Phoenix) I highly recommend it. I had to have the whole thing completely tailored to fit since it was way too big.  But I loved the dress upon first glance! I had all the train cut off, made it ankle length and added some serious sweet heart necklace.  It was pretty much like making a custom dress.  But really Strut bridal comes highly recommended from me, I felt comfortable Ann (the owner) was extremely helpful. Words of advice even if a wedding isn’t your cup of tea don’t settle on a dress early in the game, it will come back to haunt you-even if you are hard to fit and dreading the dress process.  Also go with who ever you feel comfortable with, even it is the groom!”
