Laura & Rob were married at The Bloomsbury Hotel, London and had their reception in The Kingpin Suite at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, London. The wedding was unintentionally a day of two halves, and the bride even wore two dresses for each event.

She explains, “As soon as we started planning the wedding, I had already set an agenda – no white, no normal wedding dress. It just so happened that the dress that made me cry like a baby was in Berketex Brides and was ivory! Even though I didn’t want to wear a ‘normal’ dress, I still bought wedding magazines and hoped that I would find something super in there. Out of about 15 magazines, I had dogeared the page of only one dress, but forgot about it. After trying on about 6 dresses, the lady said what about this one – I put it on and couldn’t stop crying – it was the one from the magazine.”

“I still think it was a different dress; it’s got a vintage feel and I loved the lacy train as I had never seen it on any other dresses that didn’t cost a fortune. But with the reception in a bowling alley I was worried that it was really impractical. So I trotted off to Vivien of Holloway, found a fabulous white lace 50′s style number and bought a pink poof to go underneath.”

After their ceremony the couple were transported to Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes in a pink taxi. “Rob had bought the girls tickets to a show (which was awful) the day before the wedding, but it did mean that when we left the hotel to go to Soho we found our ideal wedding transport right outside the door; a pink cab!” Laura continued. “There are only 2 in the world and it was it was a complete surprise. Gee (the taxi driver) didn’t normally work on Sundays but she was an absolute star and came and ferried us and all of our guests to the Kingpin Suite.”

The guests were treated to a laid back reception complete with bowling, dancing and transfer tattoos. “Rob and I always said that we didn’t want a conventional reception, we wanted people to be able to do what they wanted and not feel like their only options were sitting down or dancing. The Kingpin Suite at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes was the only reception venue we saw, we knew we loved it straight away. We didn’t need to add any decor, so we made sure we had personal touches around the space. Our favourites were the ‘Pimp Your Drink’ stand, where people could add umbrellas, mermaids, giraffes and spangly straws to their drinks, and our Tattoo Parlour, a book of tattoo transfers so people could get inked for the night with The Cattoo (that’s right – a cat tattoo), The Hello Sailor and others. And Rob was inspired to get the Hello Sailor (anchor) tattoo as a permanent reminder of the day 2 days after the wedding.”

“For our favours we decided to give our guests little jars of sweets, and rather than buying them we decided to make them ourselves. A successful trip to Ikea (not Rob’s idea!) meant we bought the jars at 6 for £2, meaning our favours turned out to be a total bargain. To give the jars our own special twist we decorated the lids with Japanese scrap booking tape. Our place cards doubled as part of the favour too; we chose some of our favourite books, Twilight, Microserfs and P.S. I love you, and cut out passages to make into name tags.”

“The amazing thing about the reception is that we are still finding out what people got up to – tales of man-love duets in the karaoke room, serious table football tournaments and harassing the servers for slices of the 26″ pizzas! Everyone had their own experience of the night and that makes us happy.”

I am more than a little bit excited to share Lisa & Alex’s Vegas nuptials with you today. The couple are somewhat Rock n Roll Bride regulars. Lisa was the photographer in charge of the photo booth carnage at the Rock n Roll Bride party, and I’ve already featured them twice before, in both their engagement shoot waaaay back in July and their honeymoon session just 2 weeks ago. However when I saw their actual wedding images I literally squealed with delight. The bar? Yeah that’s been raised…

The couple decided to ditch the UK and in March, jetted off to Las Vegas to be married. They chose The Artisan Hotel as their ceremony and lunch venue. They then went for portraits with their photographer’s Hannah & Kelty of Steep Street Photography at the iconic Neon Boneyard. Here, they had their ‘first dance’ with just the 4 of them in attendance. “We wanted that moment to be just about us and not have to worry about how silly we looked and how our first dance song wasn’t going to be to everyones liking,” Lisa explained. “I treasure those photos because we are completely in the moment and totally unaware of anything but each other.”

The party was then rounded off with bowling at The Orleans Casino. ”For two hours everyone was bowling,” continued the bride. “It was great seeing everyone all dressed up and wearing bowling shoes. I went round taking some polaroids for our guest book and everyone had a chance to sign a bowling pin for us as well. We wanted the day to be about us but we wanted everyone to have fun, we didn’t want people hanging around for formal shots or the having to sit through hours of speeches or wait around while rooms got changed over for the evening fun, we just wanted every to sit back and relax.”

Lisa wore a black Candy Anthony dress with red accents which set the theme for their day. She explained, “We did everything our way at our wedding and I we tried not to settle. I didnt want to hide behind traditions that meant nothing to us and we wanted to be ourselves on our wedding day. If it didn’t reflect us, it didn’t get included. A white dress didn’t give me confidence and make me feel amazing so I went with what did. I made sure I didn’t hide my tattoos or my hair because it wasn’t right for a wedding.”

“From the moment we got engaged we knew it was going to be a Las Vegas wedding and we announced our engagement to our friends by asking if they fancied a trip to Las Vegas,” she continued. “We new from the very beginning it was going to be a small wedding and we wanted to do it our way. I knew straight away what style of dress I wanted and when I found Candy Anthony, I was in heaven.  I made an appointment just to check out their range, make sure that the style of dress was right for me and after an hour of trying on some different styles and colours, I put a deposit down. It wasn’t my intention but when I walked out of the changing room in my dress, I just knew I had found my dress.I was initially really nervous when the sales assistant suggested black as I had gone in with the intention of wearing a ivory dress. Somehow, every shade of white, ivory or cream just didn’t work and I didn’t feel confident in it, I didn’t feel like me but when I put on that black dress, it all fell into place. I felt amazing and I just knew Alex would love it.”

Obviously this was not going to be a usual wedding… even in Vegas terms! The couple were keen to put their stamp on their day in any way they could. “We knew early on we wanted to be able to look back at our wedding and smile and remember how perfect it was for us at the time and I think we achieved it,” said Lisa. “We threw out the rule book, only keeping the traditions that where important and created out own traditions.”

“We made sure everything at our wedding reflected us as a couple. From our invites to our flowers to our wedding favours, everything had a place in our lives.  Alex and I meet because of music, so we had 7 inch record invites. I have swallow tattoos so added a tattoo inspired theme to our invites. We carried on the swallow theme and Princess Lasertron made us the most amazing swallow boutonnieres for Alex, our best man and my Dad. She also made my flowers. When Alex and I first started dating we used to send each other mixtapes so we made a mix CD as part of our wedding favours. Alex designed the cover and I had the fun job of cutting the covers and tracking listing to size.  We both have a sweet tooth and because I wasn’t able to create a tuck shop/sweet table in Las Vegas, we brought the sweets to our guests and after stamping the bags and labels with our initials, we filled them with our favourite sweets (and Kat you would be proud as a few of the sweet bags contained Percy Pigs.)”

More photo goodness after the ‘jump’ of course…

Today’s shoot is one that celebrates all thing British-ness but without a blatant ’jumping on the royal wedding bandwagon.’ Thank goodness for these guys and their original take on what it means to be British.

“With the royal wedding drawing so much attention around the world to good Ol’ Blighty, I wanted to showcase a quirkier side of England!” stylist and wedding planner Mary of Forever & Ever Events told me.  “So I teamed up photographer, Aneta Mak, who specializes in shooting on film, designer Delphine Manivet, milliner Edwina Ibbotson and Bloomsbury Lanes Bowing Alley for an inspirational shoot that celebrated what I consider truly British: high-end meets retro.”

The team chose the Bloomsbury area of London, a location already famed for the Bloomsbury Group (literary giants Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, Ruskin, to name but a few) because they wanted to show the area in a the modern light that it has become in the last several years – young and hip, with many hidden gardens and squares and of course the vintage bowling lanes. They wanted to ‘marry’ the the literary with the modern and the retro, so asked Abbey at House of Sugalily to create “book” invitations that were a nod to the literary heritage with iconic British symbols and retro bowling references.  The colours of the bowling alley even reflected the colors of the Union Jack, which they also echoed in the place cards designed by modern calligrapher Dear Darling Calligraphy.

I found Aurora & Ben’s wedding when a blog reader sent me the link to the couple’s blog. I was in instant love and sent them an email right away demanding to know more details! I am muchly exited to share those details with you all. I’ve been reading all your comments that are coming through on the readers survey and judging by your responses methinks you will like this wedding a lot – diy budget and locally-sourced loveliness!

The couple, who paid for the entire wedding themselves were determined to create a wedding that was not only undeniable ‘them’ but didn’t cost them the earth – therefore diy a-plenty was the name of the game! Everything from the bride and bridesmaid’s accessories to the cake and the flowers were all locally sourced ‘bits’ that the wedding party put together themselves. “We were paying for this wedding ourselves, so DIY was our general M.O” the couple told me. ”We are very lucky to have talented, helpful friends and family and put their skills to the test! We had people assigned to random tasks in order to pull the day off: my friend from art school and her man executed a paper-plane lined path to the ceremony site; our mutual friend/ My Shero performed the ceremony, our groomsmen set out chairs and later gathered them up, one of our bridesmaids did double duty as our photographer. We even had friends in attendance who helped out without our prompting.  Our friend Courtney brought her own pages from an atlas and had guests who got their early enough to help fold tiny paper airplanes, which were left on everyone’s chair before the ceremony.  As we recessed down the aisle at the end of the ceremony, we were surprised by everyone throwing tiny paper airplanes at us.”
