Emil & Tarryn threw the styling for their South African trash the dress shoot together themselves. They wore their wedding outfits but wanted to funk them up a bit for this laid back session.

“My husband and I are both students and so we had to wing our outfits for the trash the dress session.” the bride told me. “It was actually very fun to walk around gathering ideas from costume shops and low budget chain stores. Our main venue for the shoot was red, black  and white, so these become our colours of choice. We wanted to bring in more way-out colours and used the apple red and apple green sunglasses which were repeated in the two different apples found on some of the photos. My wedding dress is your typical fairy princess dress – and our wedding photos move along that theme. Emil and I like diversity, so we decided to do something a little bit different for the photo session.”

“I found the little red hat in a evening dress shop and it struck a chord: it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland whose style is the perfect alter ego to my dress. Love the fact that Alice is not your average heroine: she’s nosy and a bit imperious (in the original story), but brave and confused (in the Johnny Depp version). In both versions, she’s just different: that’s all :) . Again, just perfect for our ‘diverse’ shoot concept. A friend of mine, who dabbles in fashion design, helped with further embellishments to the hat (like the veil).  Both Emil and my TTD shoes are super ugly, but  in the same breath, funny. They also brought the red colour down the length of the body to balance the overall picture.”

“My husband’s wedding suit was a similar case to my wedding dress. It was a lovely suit, but we thought it a bit too formal for our trash the dress session. So, we chose a basic ‘background’ (white billowy shirt and black pants) and started searching for our different elements. We were clothes shopping one day when we came across the hat he wore; thought it was very debonair and that was that. The suspenders, like the shoes, brought in the red and a bit of funkiness.”

“Finally, Emil is very fond of his Vespa and insisted (from before we were married) that it be part of the TTD shoot. It has now become a future family relic!”

Rachel & Dale may have got married in Vegas first, but having a goth perfect UK wedding was also very important to them. The couple, who’s outrageous punk rock engagement session I featured back in July, told me all about their awesome wedding, both here and in Viva Las Vegas! Rock music, choreographed lights, smoke machines  and dry icewere what was required for this fabulously theatrical wedding!

“We knew we didn’t want a conventional wedding, not being exactly a conventional couple so we eloped to Las Vegas in August and had Elvis do the deed for us,” Rachel told me. ”We only told a few people we were going. We had a fantastic few days in Vegas then hired a convertible Mustang and drove through Death Valley and across Yosemite National Park – including having to sleep in the car one night, not easy for a 6 foot tall groom! Although my wedding dress made a surprisingly comfy pillow.”

“We drove through to San Francisco and stayed for a week. While we were there we popped into the PictureMachine (a very fine tattoo establishment) and Dale got an appointment set up for some new ink. The card in his top hat was the business card from his tattoo man (on the back it says $40 deposit paid – Dale and Wife!!) He got an awesome tat, complete with Highway 101 sign and a desert scene, surrounded by an old wild west border and a couple of wedding rings to finish it off. Love it!”

“The UK wedding was totally unofficial, not even a civil ceremony. It was for our friends and family to see us “married” in our ideal perfect way. So, we took a stroll around Kirkstall Abbey last year and joked about how cool it would be to get married there…and then it started! We got prices from the Abbey (ludicrously cheap to hire) and the whole thing grew arms and legs all by itself! The lights, fog, music, shrubbery…we had an insanely theatrical wedding with a rock music soundtrack to boot.”

“Dale swaggered down the aisle to the Ecstasy of Gold by Metallica, I came in to Yellowcard’s You and Me and One Spotlight. Both songs complete with dry ice and choreographed lighting. My friend Belinda was our officiant (the funniest girl I know, she dressed up as a geeky priest for the occasion and even sang Nana Mouskouri halfway through the ceremony!) Dale’s daughter was his Best Woman and my oldest friend Louise was my bridesmaid, dressed in black with fab red shoes and not a hint of a puffy sleeve in sight.”

“We had about 45 guests for the whole thing, everyone said it was the coolest wedding they’d ever been to and had never seen anything quite like it! We all hopped on an old red route-master double decker bus to take us to the reception where we got royally pissed and danced like idiots all night. No cheesy tunes were played and we rocked out to NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, The Jam, Queen, ACDC, Green Day (and a bit of Bon Jovi for the laydees! Much to Dale’s displeasure!) It was freaking awesome!!”

Mindy & David got married at The Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the hotel that provided the inspiration to Stephen King for The Shining.

“Our first thoughts about what we wanted our wedding to look and sound and feel like were all over the board” the couple told me. ”Our first decision was the location.  We had stayed at the Historic Stanley Hotel the summer previous, and while we were familiar with much of the folklore of the place, we were delighted to find character that goes far deeper than “haunted joint.”  We had a wonderful time and felt a connection to the Stanley.”

“Touring possible locations in Denver and the surrounding area, we visited many nice places with good things to offer.  When we returned to the Stanley to consider it as a wedding location, though, it was immediately evident to both of us that we found our place.  Other locations offered beautiful wall finishes or breathtaking views, but no other option had the richness about it that the Stanley oozed.  The often cracking paint (new paint jobs last less than a year there) and imperfections added to the individual nature of the building that really resonated with us.  The main downside to the Stanley is the fact that they host multiple weddings every weekend in the summer, and we didn’t want to be ‘just another wedding.’  In the end, it just inspired us to create something individual and extraordinary.”

David & Julie-Anne’s wedding shoot was a total reflection on who they are as a couple. Everything they chose to wear had special meaning to them and was sentimental and personal. “We didn’t want the usual stresses of a modern day wedding to take away from the love and happiness of our day, so we chose to keep it simple, fun and comfortable” they explained.

Julie-Anne wore an original German 1950′s ivory capture lace and satin dress which was the heirloom of a family friend. With this she wore a vintage burgundy & black English worsted & wool tapestry coat with fur collar, ‘Papucchi’ flats and a small burgundy hat with rose detail and black netting.

The full list of everything used and worn can be seen after the ‘jump’
