Spectacular Gothic Wedding in New Zealand: Vivien & Nick

Goth NZ Wedding_Nisha Ravji Photography-359

Like so many awesome couples these days, Vivien and Nick wanted a wedding to reflect them – and that meant going against what a lot of their friends and family thought! When people expressed disapproving words that the bride would be wearing black, she ignored them! She knew it was the right choice for her, and thank goodness she stuck with it because doesn’t she look SPECTACULAR?!

“The wedding theme was our take on Victorian elegance… meets metal!” began Vivien. “Our colour scheme was black and cream. I initially dreamt of a ‘black-out’ wedding, where EVERYONE present would be dressed entirely in black. I still think that would have looked amazing, but as word spread around family, friends and colleagues that I would be wearing black it became apparent that many don’t share my enthusiasm for the shade! I faced a lot of pressure to change my mind, and wear ANYTHING other than black. It was actually ridiculous. I’m so, so happy now that I didn’t compromise on what I wanted just so that others would feel more comfortable.”

Shalma & Leo’s 1950’s Inspired Candy Anthony Wedding

Shalma & Leo are what I like to call friends of the blog. Not only did they find photographer David McNeil though a feature on Rock n Roll Bride, but I featured their gorgous A Bout de Souffle engagement session over the summer AND myself and the bride have exchanged regular emails ever since they got engaged about all things wedding! So when David asked if I wanted to feature them …well he didn’t have to ask twice!

“I am so pleased that you think my wedding is Rock n Roll enough for your website,” Shalma wrote. “I would love for you to blog it! I have to say this again, but your blog has been such immense help over the past year. When I got engaged every childhood dream I had of the full Indian wedding just wasn’t an option anymore. To find a wedding site which thrives on individuality and the boldness to do what you want is refreshing and fun.”

Shalma wore a Candy Anthony dress – the first one she laid eyes on! “My dress was the first one I saw in the shop and I knew that was the one,” she explained. “I tried on about 5 before hand (even the leopard print one which is gorgeous) but I kept going back to that one. They also made my fascinator in the same fabric. To keep with the 50’s theme, my Mother in law very kindly gave me her Mother’s vintage 50’s pearl necklace with a diamante clasp. It’s stunning I was really honoured that she wanted me to have it. At my hen party all the girls pitched in and brought me my Tiffany pearl earrings to match.  I was so touched that they all did that for me I couldn’t believe it. Luckily I had the shoes already which made the whole outfit complete!”

However for this Rock n Roll wedding it wasn’t just the bride who stole the show. The super stylish Leo was also certain that he didn’t want to look like every other groom. “Its so difficult for grooms to find something that isn’t your generic penguin suit,” Shalma said. “He also can’t buy anything off the rack so finding somewhere that does cheap tailor made suits was hard.  He wanted a herringbone textured 3 piece suit in a brownish colour. There’s a great website called A Suit That Fits. They are brilliant. You pick the fabric, style, lining, everything and its made to measure.”

The couple didn’t want an obvious theme for their wedding, they just wanted to keep it simple, beautiful and perfect for them. “We both wanted to do things our way. We had a small budget and we’re both very creative so a lot of the design work was done by us. We basically wanted to incorporate all of our favourite things. I made my own bunting and cushion covers out of Indian silks brought from Southall. That was so much fun. I love Southall. I probably made 4 trips there in total and brought yards of coloured fabric, ribbons, jewellery. It was an epic task and so much fun.  Leo designed our invitations and he also designed the cocktail menus. We made a photo guest book using funny pictures of everyone.  We gave the kids little party bags so they had stuff to play with on the day. We painted glass jars different colours which were used for the flowers and candles.  Leo’s sister made our red velvet wedding cake which tasted amazing! We had a playlist on our ipod made up of our guest favourite songs which worked really well. We only had 1 bridesmaid and groomsmen each. My bridesmaid’s wore a dress from Coast which matched my petticoat, shoes from Carvela and the sash was brought from Candy Anthony. The groomsmen wore his own suit.”

Rachel & Dale’s Fabulously Theatrical Goth Wedding

Rachel & Dale may have got married in Vegas first, but having a goth perfect UK wedding was also very important to them. The couple, who’s outrageous punk rock engagement session I featured back in July, told me all about their awesome wedding, both here and in Viva Las Vegas! Rock music, choreographed lights, smoke machines  and dry icewere what was required for this fabulously theatrical wedding!

“We knew we didn’t want a conventional wedding, not being exactly a conventional couple so we eloped to Las Vegas in August and had Elvis do the deed for us,” Rachel told me. “We only told a few people we were going. We had a fantastic few days in Vegas then hired a convertible Mustang and drove through Death Valley and across Yosemite National Park – including having to sleep in the car one night, not easy for a 6 foot tall groom! Although my wedding dress made a surprisingly comfy pillow.”

“We drove through to San Francisco and stayed for a week. While we were there we popped into the PictureMachine (a very fine tattoo establishment) and Dale got an appointment set up for some new ink. The card in his top hat was the business card from his tattoo man (on the back it says $40 deposit paid – Dale and Wife!!) He got an awesome tat, complete with Highway 101 sign and a desert scene, surrounded by an old wild west border and a couple of wedding rings to finish it off. Love it!”

“The UK wedding was totally unofficial, not even a civil ceremony. It was for our friends and family to see us “married” in our ideal perfect way. So, we took a stroll around Kirkstall Abbey last year and joked about how cool it would be to get married there…and then it started! We got prices from the Abbey (ludicrously cheap to hire) and the whole thing grew arms and legs all by itself! The lights, fog, music, shrubbery…we had an insanely theatrical wedding with a rock music soundtrack to boot.”

“Dale swaggered down the aisle to the Ecstasy of Gold by Metallica, I came in to Yellowcard’s You and Me and One Spotlight. Both songs complete with dry ice and choreographed lighting. My friend Belinda was our officiant (the funniest girl I know, she dressed up as a geeky priest for the occasion and even sang Nana Mouskouri halfway through the ceremony!) Dale’s daughter was his Best Woman and my oldest friend Louise was my bridesmaid, dressed in black with fab red shoes and not a hint of a puffy sleeve in sight.”

“We had about 45 guests for the whole thing, everyone said it was the coolest wedding they’d ever been to and had never seen anything quite like it! We all hopped on an old red route-master double decker bus to take us to the reception where we got royally pissed and danced like idiots all night. No cheesy tunes were played and we rocked out to NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, The Jam, Queen, ACDC, Green Day (and a bit of Bon Jovi for the laydees! Much to Dale’s displeasure!) It was freaking awesome!!”

With Extra Sparkle

This little gift arrived into my inbox the other day from the ever delightful Brandi Thompson…I didn’t realise it was Christmas already! You might remember Jayme from her engagement session with her (then) Hubby to be Matt and those shoes! Well from these it would appear that their wedding was just as Rock n Roll, gothic and pretty damn cool. Her dress was made especially for her by a local seamstress and the hat was from Leg Avenue to which she added her own extra sparkle!
