Birdcage Veil

There’s quite a story behind Gemma & Giuseppe’s gorgeous wedding, and one that I hope might ease any of you stressing about your wedding venue (I know Roo had a bit of a similar drama last month, she’ll be writing about it for you soon).

“Our reception took place in tepees, at Oatlands Park Hotel, Weybridge (who, p.s. were AMAZING)” Gemma explained. “We had always wanted a tepee party, but our original venue to pitch them fell through with just 8 days to go! Oatlands Park Hotel came to our rescue and then some. They turned everything around so brilliantly – nothing was a problem, and they accommodated everything from the tepees to my 100 vintage teacups for the arrival champagne. After it all went bottoms up, major panic ensued for approximately half a day before I gave myself a stern talking to and set to work! I have to say that despite all of the last minute worry, the day went like a dream, and it just goes to show that even the biggest disasters don’t mean that your special day is ruined!”

However there’s no telling that there was any drama when looking at their fabulous photographs from Robbins Photographic. ”We found photographer Lee over a year before our wedding, and as soon as we sat down for a coffee and a chat, we knew instantly that we’d met our photographer. Photography was one of the most important things for us. After all, it’s a record of your day and something you will look back at for years to come. To say we are both chuffed with the results is an understatement! Lee perfectly captured the fun and laid back vibe of our day (not to mention the fact that he totally got my personal hatred of anything posed to within an inch of its life, and/or the compulsory group shots!). From our ‘couple’ shots to all of the little DIY details, Lee covered it all and then some. Even our guests commented on how great he was (and that was before he won them over with his photobooth box of tricks!).”

Even though they didn’t have much time, the couple were able to really put their own stamp on their reception tepees, and even the ceremony was filled with personal touches. “I was determined to make sure that every detail of the wedding was ‘us’. Even though we chose a church ceremony (traditionally very formal), we made sure the atmosphere was relaxed and fun,” Gemma continued. “The vicar was more than happy for our string trio to play modern, well-known songs, to make sure the music was personal to us all the way through the ceremony. We also made 100 flags for our guests to wave when we walked back down the aisle as man and wife. I loved it! They were really easy to make – we bought some good quality stiff paper, a load of pop-cake sticks, and set to work with a few pairs of wavy-edged scissors and a hot glue gun!”

”Our party tepees were also littered with various bits and bobs we made ourselves. Giuseppe did a sterling job of making a job-lot of beards and red lips on sticks (which went down a storm with our guests by the looks of the photos!), my Dad made our seating plan frame out of polystyrene and gold spray paint, my Mum and I spent a whole day hand-painting lanterns from Ikea to make sure they went with our colour scheme, and I had a lovely old time thinking up all manner of ideas to transform the blank canvas of the tents. The list is pretty endless, but if you can manage to do it yourself you can create an atmosphere which is totally up your street for a lot less money than you think.”

“There were so many different themes or styles I loved, and I’m sure Giuseppe tore his hair out on more than one occassion every time I discovered something else or changed my mind! So in the end we had a little bit of everything that makes us ‘us’! Let’s be honest, our wedding was full of contradictions. We just threw everything into a big pot and gave it a good old stir…and thankfully it worked! I won’t lie, it was hard work. I was more of a hectic bride than a blushing one! But all of the little things we did were definitely worth it. Our main aim was to avoid having a traditional ‘do’, so we simply saw our wedding as the biggest celebration bash we would ever throw.”

The bride wore a stunning blush vintage wedding dress from Fur Coat No Knickers and some statement Beatrix Ong shoes. “I always knew that I’d end up with a vintage dress, and annoyingly I had visions of it being a champagne/blush coloured dress. Not easy when most dresses are either white or ivory! Amazingly, after only one week and two visits to the girls at Fur Coat No Knickers, I’d found my dress! I made quite a few changes to it – we added more tulle to make the skirt bigger, changed the neckine from straight to sweetheart, replaced the waist sash and added some silk flowers to the back. I also quickly discovered that a long veil just wasn’t me (I felt like I’d aged 100 years!), and that a birdcage veil was much more my style.”

“This was all no problem for the girls at FCNK, who sourced all manner of flowers, feathers, and vintage jewels to make various creations until we hit upon the right one! I’d recommend  Fur Coat No Knickers to anyone – the girls, Emma and Laura, are incredible, we always had a laugh when we went. They were both extremely helpful in coming up with ideas to fit in with my style, as well as totally understanding any changes I wanted to make to the dress. I was made to feel extremely special every time I stepped through the door, and my dress fittings became one of the most memorable occassions in my wedding prep history!”

Faith & Chris were married at Camp Brockway in Pratt’s Falls, NY. The theme of the day revolved around birds, but more than that it revolved around the love and the fact that the two of them were committing their lives to each other. After a touching outdoor ceremony, the couple enjoyed some time having their photos taken by Love Me Do Photography.

“My favorite part of the day was probably when we were taking pictures with Love Me Do,” wrote Faith. “It was such a nice way to spend those last betrothed moments away from all the matrimonial madness just posing for portraits in the woods with each other. It felt so natural and I think the photos really show that.”

“I guess I’d just like to add that I’ve always wished for Prince Charming to come sweep me off my feet and give me the wedding of my dreams. Some things really are worth the wait and after our incredibly long courtship and year and a half engagement, the pay off couldn’t be sweeter. Chris and I both feel like the luckiest people on earth and are so excited to be starting our family with the love and support of all of our friends and family. August 20th was the most special day we’ve ever shared and are so grateful to everyone who helped us make it so memorable, especially Momma and Poppa Tyler.”

A couple of weeks ago I was invited by Candy Anthony to visit their shop to check out (and try on!) some of their latest dress designs. Like I was going to turn that down! Here are a few of my favourites that I tried on…How lucky am I!?

The Shop

Located on London’s South Bank overlooking the Thames, Candy Anthony‘s store is like the closet of a very beautiful princesses. Walking in I was greeted by rows and rows of tulle, netting and brightly coloured sashes. I’m in heaven! The cakes went down pretty well too…

Pink Polka Dots

I started by putting on a ‘basic’ white dress with a pink petticoat (of course) and Rachel (who was helping me) asked which accessories I wanted to add. I loved the customizability of Candy’s dresses. That you could take the ‘plain’ (for lack of a better word – these dresses certainly aren’t plain!) tea length dress and add netting, lace, bows, petticoats and sashes in every colour imaginable! The of course there’s the veils and hair flowers in every colour and style you could think of. Amazing.

The dresses come in a number of different necklines i.e strapless, sweetheart (my favourite), high necked – so there really is a style to suit everybody. I was immediately drawn to this pink polka dot skirt overlay and white bow combo. I die.

Lovely Lace

A more traditional look maybe, but one I still loved. The beautiful lace overlay transformed the basic gown to one fit for a princess. The puffy veil (one of my favourites – see the gallery below for more photos) and bright pink sash gave this look a Rock n Roll edge. I was smitten.

Dotty All Over

I loved the sheer neckline of the lace (much more flattering that a strapless dress for someone with huge boobies like me!) but I was also smitten with the polka dots so Rachel suggested this all over dotty addition. The cute little bow at the back was less dramatic than the big sashes but just as cute none the less!

Gorgeous Gingham

I wasn’t sure if I’d like this gingham sash as it’s not a pattern I’d usually wear, but I have to say my mind was changed as soon as I put it on. How perfect would this addition be fore a countryside or farm wedding? Candy Anthony makes sashes in pretty much every colour imagineable. They’ve even made a leopard print one in the past. Oh lala!

Crazy Colour – Pink n Black

Not every bride wants to wear white on her wedding day which is why Candy Anthony carry a number of beautiful coloured dresses. This pink dress with a sweetheart neckline (see gallery below for more) was a no-brainer when it came to seeing if I wanted to try it on…and the black polka dot overlay (and my beat-up converse trainers) made this dress the perfect Rock n Roll Bride number no?

Crazy Colour – Yellow

Who would have thought that yellow would look so awesome?! Maybe one of the biggest surprises of the day was how much I adored this yellow dress. The colour was just WOW. I’m certainly going to be borrowing this dress at some point soon…well I’m going to try to anyway (pleeeease?!)

Crazy Colour – Lovely Leopard

Show me a Rock n Roll Bride who doesn’t love leopard print? Exactly…they’re pretty hard to come by! Which is why I died and went to heaven when I laid eyes on this baby. The purple petticoat is hella awesome too huh? This dress would also look amazing with a red petticoat I reckon. This is perfect Rock n Roll Bride dressing!

The Beast

OK so that’s not it’s official name but one I’ve given it! Candy’s regular dresses have three layers of tulle (which is pretty big anyway, espcially when you add a petticoat) but this number, which takes pride of place in their shop window, had ten layers of tulle! The dress was created espeically for the catwalk at The National Wedding Show last year and I was shocked and horrored to hear that no one else has bought this one. Come on girls, don’t be afraid of a bit of tulle! Sure the dress is pretty big, but it’s certainly not in ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ territory and I have to say I felt fabulous as soon as I put this one on.

Huge skirt = the allusion of a tiny waist. WIN.

I seriously loved this one. It was certainly my favourite and if I was to get married again this is the dress I’d choose (with a sweetheart neckline I reckon…again with the big boobs!) You can see why though right It’s wonderful.

“Some people described our wedding theme as Rockabilly, but the only rockabilly music was played at the ceremony,” newlywed April told me. “We are punk rockers at heart, but listen to a wide variety of music in the rock genre.  We thought it would be very difficult to do a punk rock wedding and still keep it somewhat formal.  (Rich’s family is Catholic and I am not religious in any way.  We didn’t want to horrify his grandmother!)”

“We chose Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent and Wanda Jackson for ceremony music.  I walked down the aisle to “Rose of my heart” by Johnny Cash.   I had “rose of my heart” engraved in Rich’s wedding ring.  It was a surprise and when Rich saw it after the ceremony, he got tears in his eyes.  It was one of my favorite moments of the day.  My grandfather died exactly 3 weeks before the wedding.  He was a Johnny Cash fan, so this made it even harder to keep my emotions in check while walking down the aisle.”

As you can see, music played a big part in April & Rich’s wedding. In fact a lot of the significant times in their relationship were down to music too! “Rich and I met on April 7, 1997 at a high school dance,” April continued. ” I was about to turn 16, and he was just a baby at age 14! I was a sophomore and he was in eighth grade.  I was seeing someone else at the time.  It was a very on and off relationship, and I was always miserable.  And full of angst! Rich was always trying to cheer me up.  We talked on the phone for hours every night.  I still remember the day that he told me that if I ditched Brian and started to date him and listen to Reel Big Fish, I would be much happier!  I took his advice, and the next two years were some of the best of my life”

“We both love music and started going to shows when we could.  The first punk rock show we ever went to together was the Casualties.  We went with Amy (maid of honor) and had the best time.  (Of course, we snuck out of the fire hall to make out in the dug out for a while.)  The first big concert we went to was the Cherry Poppin Daddies, Green Day and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones in 1998. We met and had our picture taken with Dicky Barrett from the Bosstones.  We displayed this picture at the wedding. Rich was really into ska in high school.  I went on a trip to NY and bought him a hat at Moon Ska Records.  He still has it.”

Obviously the wedding playlist was a vitally important part of the wedding to this couple and they spent a lot of time getting it perfect. “When coming up with the wedding playlist, we originally wanted to choose 1 song from each band we have seen live together.  But, we couldn’t find any appropriate Casualties songs!  We played 1 song by The Donna’s, my all time favorite band.  We went backstage with the Donna’s last year.  I was so excited and told my friend, ‘All I wanted to do in high school was meet the Donna’s and marry Rich Thompson! Dreams do come true.’  When we were in high school, Rich used to sing the song Totally by Screeching Weasel to me.  We used lyrics from this song on our save the date cards.  ’Totally neat, totally sweet, totally knocked me off my feet.’  Rich’s Mom had our cake knife engrave with ‘totally neat, totally sweet.’  Rich and I both love Rancid.  We played ‘Radio’ (‘I never fell in love, til I fell in love with you.  Never knew what a good time was, til I had a good time with you!’)  We also played ‘Who would’ve thought’.”

When the recently married Joie emailed me to share her awesome first dance video, I knew instantly I wanted to share it! Anyone that dances to Weezer is bad ass in my book! I was surprised though that Joie didn’t send me her full wedding as she said wasn’t sure that it wasn’t ‘Rock n Roll’ enough for the blog. Erm…no way lady! As soon as I saw the beautiful Meschantes Couture corset dress and the portraits on the swing I was smitten!

Joie & Cody were marred at Preston Woodall House in Benson NC. “We were NOT hell bent on making a unique wedding really.” the bride bagan. “We were hell bent on making it OUR wedding. We were also very determined to make our guests feel as comfortable as possible!”

They did however put a few quirky touches into their day to make it their own. Joie continued, “We had our dinner before the ceremony. It was a casual buffet style that lasted from 6-8 and if you were late – no big deal! The wedding party did not wear their ceremony dresses or suits but whatever they felt like wearing and we went upstairs about 30 minutes before the evening ceremony. It worked out really well, we got the dinner out of the way and after the ceremony it was party time!”

“My dress was made personally for me by Meschantes Couture. I have worked with them in the past and they offered to make me one and I damn near cried when they did. And I almost cried again when it was finished. I designed it and they were able to make it come to life. I can not even to begin to show the gratitude I have for them. It was made from the material they have in their shop plus as old wedding dress I found at a thrift store in my hometown of Dunn, NC.”

“My necklace pendant was made from my Grandmother’s chandelier. Growing up I always LOVED it. At 5 and 6 years old I would steal the “jewels” off of it and pretend they were earrings, and necklaces, and jewels for crowns. The christmas before the wedding their house was burnt to the ground with my grandparents still inside of it. Luckily they came out ok but they were sedated and asleep in a burn unit for about a month and it was a pretty rough time. During this period we went and salvaged what we could from their home…I immediately went for the dining room where I found my beloved jewels scattered and covered in soot. I cleaned them and made necklaces of them from my family. I’m still making them. To me. it’s one of the most valuable pieces of glass in the world.”

“If I had to pick a theme for our wedding it would have been “Structured Chaos”. Haphazard with a purpose,” Joie laughed. “All of our programs were tied with twine and each had a different charm on it. Each table had a centrepiece that was completely unique from any other table. Along with our wedding cake we got about 10 dozen cupcakes and each dozen had a different look. We spent a year and a half collecting 300 different china plates. If it were up to us we would have done the same to chairs and tablecloths and well…anything you can think of! But we also wanted to get married before we turned 50! Our vows were taken from ‘Between the Buried and Me’ and Butch Walker songs.”

Oh, and don’t forget about the video that started it all…Joie & Cody’s awesome first dance to Weezer!
