Claire & Joe’s Beautiful & Funky New Forest Wedding

A Temperley dress, a skull handbag and a groom in Vivienne Westwood? Oh yeah, this is my kind of wedding! Claire & Joe’s wedding was held at Rhinefield House Hotel in the New Forest and was beautifully captured by photographer Lisa Devlin. Quite frankly this wedding is made for these pages, and so I’m more than a little bit thrilled to share it with you today.

“We knew we didn’t want to look like every other bride and groom and wanted to be ourselves,” the bride told me. “We took our inspiration from the 1930’s and although it wasn’t a theme it had a definite feel. One of the most important things for me as a make up artist was how to wear my make up which I did myself on the day. I love a strong rock n roll lip so I went for a dark 30s look using MAC Current lip liner all over with MAC Ruby Woo lipstick on top.”

“I saw the skull bag 6 months prior to the wedding and desperately wanted it but it sold before I could get it and so I spent the next few months trawling the internet to find it. In the end due to desperation I emailed the sales department on the website to find out if they knew how I could get hold of one. Although they don’t sell through the website they ended up sending one to my house from Paris for the wedding. Brilliant service!”

“Our wedding had 1930′s vintage feel,” she continued. “We used champagne coupe glasses that were popular in the 30’s. My dress had a bit of an Art Deco feel to it along with the cut glass perfume bottles that we used as favours for the ladies. We filled them with Jo Malone perfume to make them extra special.”

“My Mum, sister and I made and sourced quite a few of the objects at the wedding. My mum found the perfume bottles at a little shop near where she lives. We filled them, hand wrote the labels and tied with lace ribbon. The table planner was made from an antique frame that we added legs to to make it stand. We printed the names for the tables on card and as a weight hung crystals from an antique chandelier. Instead of a guest book we wanted something different and I little more magical so we had a wish tree. We put Corkscrew Hazel into on old bottle and asked people to write their wishes on labels and tie them to the tree. It looked so pretty by the end and everyone really enjoyed doing it.”

Katie & Michael’s Glamorous 1920′s Wedding

Katie & Michael glamorous 1920′s wedding was held at East Close in the New Forest. The couple knew it was the venue for them as soon as they saw it – they didn’t even look elsewhere! Katie’s beautiful vintage dress came from Fur Coat No Knickers and she wore it with a marabou feather shrug from Queens and Bowl. The groom looked just as dapper with his bespoke King and Allen suit. Michael even sourced his own vintage buttons for his outfit from Button Queen and a haberdashers in Brighton. His vintage pocket watch was a gift from Katie.

“We wanted our wedding to be very ‘us’ and for everyone to have a really great time,” Katie told me. “It was brilliant – we just had all the stuff, the people and the music we love around us all day. We love art deco, the 1920/30′s swing era, mismatched stuff, sparkle… We’ve both worked in theatre and like a bit of drama. We made all our invites, place names, table names etc. Michael is a photographer so we tried to use lots of photography throughout. We just kept everything very casual and relaxed and friendly. We ignored everything people told us we should do and stuck to what we like – I think every wedding should be personal. We also wanted to make sure that everyone looked like themselves and felt really good. Michael hadn’t seen my dress but had said to me that he wanted to be marrying me as he knew me and not me looking like somebody different!”

The couple loved the mismatched look and so all the bridesmaids wore different dresses and the groomsmen wore different suits. The girl’s dresses all came from Coast, but each wore a different style and colours to individually suit.

The couple used to live in Brighton and has spent many a day lusting over the display in the Choccywoccydoodah cake shop. So when it came to planning their wedding, there really was no other choice for who they wanted to make their cake!

“Our tables were named after wine regions we had visited on our travels,” the bride continued. “Michael took me away to the Yarra Valley when he proposed and we sourced Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir for our wedding breakfast – this was the winery he took me to the night before he proposed and it is the most delicious Pinot Noir I have ever tasted. The tables were filled with antique pieces that we had collected from antiques markets and charity shops.”

“We wanted the tables to sparkle so they were filled with cut glass, silver and copperware. We also had photos on each table of our older relatives (who are no longer around) on their wedding days – the outfits they wore are incredible and there are some great hairstyles! I love pearls so I wanted strings of pearls and flowers to tie everything in together. I’m also quite obsessed with buttons and have a huge collection so our favours were small collections of vintage buttons.”

Polly & Stuart’s Wartime Wedding

Polly & Stuart’s wartime inspired wedding was held in a marquee in Polly’s parent’s back garden. “We love vintage style from the 1930′s-1960′s. We wanted to incorporate our love of 1950′s Rock n Roll into our wedding and combine it with the aesthetic of a wartime garden party,” explained the bride. ”We furnished our marquee and gentleman’s smoking room with pieces of furniture, decor and paintings from our home. I can safely say that I don’t think that anyone else has ever had a 1940′s waxworks dummy in their wedding marquee! We also wrote our own ‘hymn’ for our wedding service. We put sticks of rock on all the tables.We combined stylistic references and it worked- We backed the stage with 1950′s style working men’s club red curtains and had Victorian birdcages stuffed with ivy and pearls suspended from the ceiling. We turned my parents’ summer house into the ‘gentlemen’s smoking room’ complete with pipes, silk smoking jackets and a drinks cabinet. We had our dog Enid Mouse as our whippet of honour. Our magnificent nautical cake complete with Marzipan octopus tentacles was by Annie at Yummy Nice. The cake was topped by a sculpture of us in a boat made by my husband Stuart. We didn’t want to be constrained with any particular rules!”

Polly wore a 1930′s vintage dress which she bought from Elizabeth Avey in London, which she then had embellished by Vikki Lafford who made a beautiful art deco shoulder piece for the dress. The bride’s reception dress was a 1950′s wedding dress which was purchased for just £70 from a dusty rail at the back of a costume shop in Manchester. Her gorgeous shoes were from Emmy and her hair piece was made by Rock n Roll Bride favourite, Flo & Percy.

For the centrepieces and reception decor, the couple hired vintage crockery from A Most Curious Party. The tea cup displayed were a DIY effort by the bride’s Mum and friends. “For our afternoon drinks reception and dinner we had the wonderful DJ 78 who played a divine selection of tunes on his gramophones and he went down an absolute storm!” continued Polly. ”Our rockabilly band were the fabulous Rhythm Aces who kept the dance floor filled all night with great 50′s Rock n Roll. The music at our ceremony was performed by our musician friends Michelle and Susie. Michelle performed on our 1870′s American parlour organ which we transported (with the help of 4 very strong men) from our bedroom in London to our wedding venue in Suffolk!”

Kamela & Brian’s Organic, Vintage, Back Garden wedding

Oh yes! I am so excited by Kamela & Brian’s vintage/eco/organic/outdoor wedding. The couple made wedding choices that were totally perfect for them and ignored a lot of the usual wedding industry rubbish. They got married at their Grandparent’s house in Vancouver and had the super personal reception in their back garden.

The bride wore a stunning 1930′s vintage dress that was actually the first and only one she tried on. It literally seemed like it was made for her as she didn’t even need to get it altered. The groom and groomsmen also wore vintage clothes (except their bow tie which were made by the bride and her Mum) but one of my favourite parts of both their outfits has got to be their shoes – no uncomfortable heels for the bride or ugly ‘dress shoes’ for the groom! They both wore their favourite trainers - Toms.

Emma & Matt’s Incredible Fancy Dress Wedding

Emma & Matt had an incredible fancy dress wedding at home. The bride & groom live on a farm, so they decided their own home would be the perfect venue. The theme for the fancy dress was anything from 1920′s – 1980′s and they invited their guests to dress as their favourite decade from the last century. Even the music they selected fitted the theme, with the DJ’s ’The Beautiful and the Damned’ – who they saw playing at a festival – playing an eclectic mix of music from the 1920′s to the 1980′s throughout the evening.

“As a documentary film maker Emma used her creative skills to make her wedding truly individual, personal and above all a lot of fun,” Polly, their photographer, told me. ”This is without a doubt one of the most fantastic and fun weddings I have ever photographed and I have never laughed so much at a wedding – some of these outfits were pure genius.”

Emma & Matt decided to go as Fred Astaire & Gingers Rogers. Matt hired his outfit from Angels, the costumiers in London, and Emma created a contemporary interpretation of the film star with a stunning dress byTemperley and shoes by Office.

Their were no bridesmaids as everyone was involved in the wedding and made a real effort with their outfits.

“My sister came dressed like the 1950′s,” the bride told me. ”My Mum & her boyfriend came as JR & Sue Ellen. My dad and his wife were The Last Tsar and Tsarina. Matt’s Mum was a ’20th Century Fox’ – a version of Marilyn Monroe with a fox fur stole. George, Matt’s brother was a first world war pilot – complete with a plane!”

“We had lots of famous people there – Madonna, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Adam Ant (in fact four of them!)”

Jenny Packham & The Roaring 20′s

Jenny Packham and 1920′s styling was the order of the day for Emma & Adam’s wedding at Chewton House just outside Bristol. In fact Emma’s Jenny Packham ‘Joy’ dress provided the inspiration for the whole wedding!

The wedding theme came about by chance as when Emma visited Wedding Days in Cheltenham bridal shop to look for a potential wedding dress. She hadn’t had much luck in her search up til then but luckily for her, a promotions representative from Jenny Packham happened to be visiting the store that day and had a few “one off” dresses for Wedding Days to show case for one day only. The last dress she tried on was “Joy”. It was exactly what she had been looking for. The bride then came up with the idea to theme the whole wedding about the 1920′s/30′s style of the dress.

“We also wanted the day to be as much fun as possible and for it to stick in the memories of all the guests for long after the day had finished” the bride explained. “We asked all our guests to dress up in the style of the period so that along with the work we’d done with the venue, the florist, the car, the cake, the hair, the make up and the live band we had something that captured the roaring 20′s.”
