Sean & Deb’s masked ball wedding took place at the beginning on November at Brownsover Hall Hotel, Brownsover, Rugby. “We stumbled on the venue by accident after previously reserving two other venues”, the bride told me. “We were on our way up to my parents for christmas and made a detour to see the hall – it was amazing! Gothic, yet romantic. We fell in love with it as soon as we saw the giant Elk’s skull in the entrance hall!”

The venue fitted their wedding theme perfectly – slightly gothic and masqueradey (I’m pretty sure I just made up that word) with a 1920′s/30′s vibe.

“We were never going to have a conventional wedding – it’s just not us,” Debs continued. “Our original idea was to have a viking themed wedding, but we knew that we would have to agree on something that guests would be happy to take part in (and I really couldn’t see my Dad wearing leather and horns to walk me down the aisle!) I am obsessed with the 20′s/30′s/40′s, I think I must have been a wartime wife in a past life so when Sean presented me with my 1920′s engagement ring everything just seem to slot perfectly into place.”

“The 20′s and 30′s were so glamourous, it would give guests the perfect opportunity to dress up without feeling uncomfortable. We decided it would be like a country house party with a touch of romantic gothic…and then we decided we wanted to make it mysterious so added the masked ball element to the day and night. We just had to have the ceremony in masks! One of the best men did phone up one night though and said he had been thinking and the wedding would be like the upper deck of the Titanic in the day, and the lower deck in the evening….he wasn’t far wrong!”

Asking the guests to dress to fit their theme was something the couple thought long and hard about as they knew it would make their wedding really special. “I know some guests found it difficult knowing what to wear, so after a conversation with Sean’s Mum stating his gran was coming dressed as a goth, I knew I had to try and help those who were struggling,” Debs laughed. “I did my own blog, updating it everyday for the three weeks running up to the wedding, suggesting outfits, accessories, make up and inspirations. It worked! The wedding wouldn’t have been half as good without all the effort our guests made with their outfits. When I walked down the aisle and everyone had their masks on I was awestruck, and after the ceremony, when we were greeted by all our guests I turned to Sean and said ‘It really does look like a 1920′s houseparty…the guests look incredible’.”

Debs wore a dress made for her by Liliia. Having a custom made gown really doesn’t have to be an expensive option is you do your research. After the ceremony the bride crowd-surfed over the guests (in her full wedding attire) which certainly made for some much more Rock n Roll photographs than the traditional confetti shot!

Despite the opulent outcome, the wedding cost the couple less than £6000. “So much of our wedding was DIY as we wanted to put our stamp on it as much as possible. We are quite quirky and artistic so we did have loads of fun dying tags with tea bags, making button holes with feathers, drying out rose petals for months on end…plus we got to spend lots of time in antique shops, vintage stores and car boots which is a favourite past time! I would warn DIY brides that handmaking everything is very time consuming, but worth every second! I think another important factor is the venue. Be aware of your budget and barter! Also, we wanted a venue that looked authentic throughout so we wouldn’t have to spend too much on decorating the place.”

“We knew we wanted 20/30′s events for the table names so I decided to do a little explaination as well so guests knew how they were relevant to the wedding. The keys and luggage name tags added a touch of gothic to the tables. We made the confetti cones out of stained music sheets and we dried all the rose petals ourselves (donated by friends and family throughout the summer!)”

I adore this couple and this wedding don’t you? I’m so excited to share it with you today so thank you to the amazing Sassy of Assassynation for sending over her photos this week. Of Sassy, the bride said, “I found Sassy by accident on a bridal chat room and from the moment I met her I knew she was the photographer for us. She was totally on our wave length and we booked her even before we had found a venue and named a date! I would truthfully have chosen a wedding date based on Sassy’s availability as we were so confident she was the photographer for us!”

They also had Frank of Sassy ‘n’ Frank on board to shoot their fabulous wedding video…

Before I get into sharing these stunning photos I do have to let you know that some of them are potentially not safe for work!

Lauren & Duccio had a two-day wedding celebration (day one is on the wonderful Green Wedding Shoes today) in Ibiza. The roaring 20′s, flapper & gangster, speakeasy, glamorous and naughty vibe of the second night party day made it perfect for Rock n Roll Bride!

“This couple were seriously Rock n Roll!” photographer Polly Alexandre told me. “Pole dancers on the dancefloor and topless dancers during the drinks reception, a full on club atmosphere and awesome guest outfits! It was full on wildness and glamour.”

“The couple did away with bridesmaids and groomsmen and a cake, and made their celebrations their own with a two-part party…Night 1 was a hippy chic beach side Spanish dinner celebration after the ceremony and night 2 was the reception, again with a drinks reception, sit down meal and dancing….and a whole new theme.”

“A flamenco duo danced during dinner, bejewelled dancers from iconic Ibiza clubs Space and Pacha draped themselves across daybeds to greet the guests, danced and posed,” she continued. “US singer Barbara Tucker was flown in especially to sing the couple’s first dance where she stood on a wall in front of the sea. Watching the bride’s father dance with a topless model was priceless!”

“I love how all the groom’s friends look super cool in their bespoke suits and hats….can you tell they are all Italian?!”

Gotta love something a bit risqué for a Friday afternoon huh?! Have a great weekend guys!

Alix & Shawn were married in the Natural History Museum Los Angeles, and it was this unusual venue choice that really shaped their day. “Our wedding was a combination of historical vintage and handmade, ” the bride told me. “The Museum set the stage to transport our guests to a different time and space altogether. They were surrounded by dinosaur bones, wild animal dioramas and a beautiful historic marble building.”

“We encouraged vintage attire and had a range of time periods from the 1920′s even up till the nineties. I had my dress made and based the design on a modernized frontier style with lots of ruffles and lace. Since it was pouring on the day, I also wore a black velvet cape I made long ago. All my bridesmaids wore black dressed of their choosing, with more ruffles and lace. The groomsmen stuck with the historical theme and wore long frock coats. Shawn also had his suit jacket custom made.”

“Since the museum itself is so beautiful, we went simple on the decor, using a combination of glass jars, succulents, vintage hardware and photographs. For invitations, I made little books filled with images animals from Victorian prints that told the story of Shawn and I. I also sewed little stuffed animals for all our guests as gifts. It took months, but was so satisfying to see how much people loved them. It felt so much more meaningful to give people something that I had really cared about rather than a little trinket they would just throw away.”

“Shawn and I are both vegan and it was really important to us to have a completely vegan wedding. Our caterer was awesome and made some really amazing dishes that were complimented on by many of our non-vegan guests. Also, I made 8 vegan cakes with help from some friends the day before the wedding. When I told people I was going to make the cakes myself, so many people, family included thought it was a crazy idea, but it was one of the most enjoyable parts of all the wedding preparations. Not to mention, all the cake was eaten, with many guest having 2 or 3 (or 5) slices. Keeping everything vegan also meant we had our clothes custom made so they weren’t made of silk or wool.”

“Our wedding was Rock n Roll because we just went all out. We didn’t hold anything back or worry about what people would think. We handcrafted everything to be the most fun we could think of an didn’t pay any mind to whether that was the way people thought it was supposed to be. It’s not that we ignored tradition, but we made tradition our own. We were married in front of taxidermied elephants! We got married and then had a mondo dance party. I think any wedding that ends with shirtless men dancing is pretty damn Rock n Roll.”

Katie & Michael glamorous 1920′s wedding was held at East Close in the New Forest. The couple knew it was the venue for them as soon as they saw it – they didn’t even look elsewhere! Katie’s beautiful vintage dress came from Fur Coat No Knickers and she wore it with a marabou feather shrug from Queens and Bowl. The groom looked just as dapper with his bespoke King and Allen suit. Michael even sourced his own vintage buttons for his outfit from Button Queen and a haberdashers in Brighton. His vintage pocket watch was a gift from Katie.

“We wanted our wedding to be very ‘us’ and for everyone to have a really great time,” Katie told me. “It was brilliant – we just had all the stuff, the people and the music we love around us all day. We love art deco, the 1920/30′s swing era, mismatched stuff, sparkle… We’ve both worked in theatre and like a bit of drama. We made all our invites, place names, table names etc. Michael is a photographer so we tried to use lots of photography throughout. We just kept everything very casual and relaxed and friendly. We ignored everything people told us we should do and stuck to what we like – I think every wedding should be personal. We also wanted to make sure that everyone looked like themselves and felt really good. Michael hadn’t seen my dress but had said to me that he wanted to be marrying me as he knew me and not me looking like somebody different!”

The couple loved the mismatched look and so all the bridesmaids wore different dresses and the groomsmen wore different suits. The girl’s dresses all came from Coast, but each wore a different style and colours to individually suit.

The couple used to live in Brighton and has spent many a day lusting over the display in the Choccywoccydoodah cake shop. So when it came to planning their wedding, there really was no other choice for who they wanted to make their cake!

“Our tables were named after wine regions we had visited on our travels,” the bride continued. “Michael took me away to the Yarra Valley when he proposed and we sourced Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir for our wedding breakfast – this was the winery he took me to the night before he proposed and it is the most delicious Pinot Noir I have ever tasted. The tables were filled with antique pieces that we had collected from antiques markets and charity shops.”

“We wanted the tables to sparkle so they were filled with cut glass, silver and copperware. We also had photos on each table of our older relatives (who are no longer around) on their wedding days – the outfits they wore are incredible and there are some great hairstyles! I love pearls so I wanted strings of pearls and flowers to tie everything in together. I’m also quite obsessed with buttons and have a huge collection so our favours were small collections of vintage buttons.”

“The Great Gatsby was my inspiration (minus the abundance of alcohol and affairs!)” bride Katelyn told me. ”Our style for our wedding was very glamorous, but not without that 1920′s quirk.  I like to think my style is quirky too, so this was perfect for our wedding day.  Plus, I love fashion and culture from the past!  Now, I could never justify spending as much money on a party as Jay Gatsby, but I still wanted my reception to be as unique and fun.  So, I replaced stuffy details like flowers with more lively ideas like bright peacock feathers, and I picked a beautiful venue (that happened to be brimming with vintage touches!) where everyone would feel at home – The Guild House, Bakersfield, CA.”

“The wonderful thing about our venue too is, unlike Gatsby’s money, ours is not wasted when spent at The Guild House.  Every person working at house is a volunteer, and the proceeds benefit the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic.  The multi-course meal was delicious, and I know Gatsby would have approved!  The overflowing wine was purchased at a local grocer, Green Frog Market, and was absolutely wonderful as well!”

Katelyn wore a Maggie Sottero gown (these will always hold a special place in my heart as I was a “Maggie bride” too!) and carried a vintage brooch bouquet (some were antiques that had been in the family for over 100 years!) instead of a floral one which she made herself. The bride’s Mother made all of the centerpieces, boutonnières and other bouquets from feathers instead of flowers.
