The Luella’s Boudoir Wedding Fair & My Catwalk Debut!

March 24, 2011

I almost don’t know where to start with writing this post as the whole day is kind of a blur…a fabulous adrenalin-fuelled blur…but a blur none the less.

In actual fact, I know you really all just want to see the photos and video (eek!) of me walking the catwalk so shall we just cut to the chase and get straight to it?

I also have to share some serious love for Alica Barron and the whole team at One Marylebone for playing host and finally the awesome team of Clipso London and the girls at Benefit Cosmetics for working miracles on my hair and make up.

This sparkling red wine from GF Wines was so good… I bought two bottles!

Anna & Ian’s Urban London Wedding

March 11, 2011

As soon as photographer Eliza Claire told me that she had a bride wearing a Vivienne Westwood wedding dress I was excited. So excited.  Anyone that knows me will know that I’m a bit of a Vivienne obsessive so I really couldn’t wait to see the wedding of the bride who was rad enough to rock it out!

Anna & Ian were married in February in London. Eliza tells us all about the day, “Anna & Ian got married at the start of London Fashion Week. So it was only right that Anna picked an amazing British Designer – Vivienne Westwood –  dress to wear.  I think you know already how excited I was about Anna & Ian’s London Wedding. Anna got ready at her gorgeous Mews home in Hackney, before heading to St Etheldreda’s, Hatton Garden for their beautiful wedding ceremony. Anna wore Vivienne Westwood’s Lily gown and had flowers from Rebel Rebel in London.”

“Anna’s best friend and bridesmaid, Poppy, was so poorly on the day of the wedding but held up like a trooper, and looked gorgeous despite feeling awful, in her very stylish black bridesmaid’s dress.”

“We stopped off at Smithfield’s Market and at Soho Square on the way to the reception venue, The Union Club in Soho, where they treated their guests to a fantastic tasty meal, before enjoying The Paul James Band‘s fantastic music into the early hours.”

Nathaniel & Eve’s Quickie Wedding

January 26, 2011

When photographer Eliza Claire tweeted me to tell me the bride she had just met was wearing a Vivienne Westwood dress for her wedding I immediately got excited. So excited in fact that I ‘bagged’ featuring the event before I’d even seen one photograph! Eve’s dress was not an actual ‘wedding dress’ at all, but one from Vivienne’s Anglomania range that she had fallen in love with.

“I’d been non stop dress shopping for two weeks and so far had six wedding dresses hanging in my wardrobe – all cream or ivory, all perfectly lovely, but none quite hitting the spot,” Eve told me. “The fact was that I wanted a Vivienne Westwood dress – I just love that VW look, the corset style waist, emphasis on the bust, full skirt… But I’d been to her shop and couldn’t find anything, I think at that point I was still set on a white wedding you see. Then, the week before the wedding, in one last ditch attempt to find THE dress, I was racing through Selfridges when I passed the Anglomania concession – and there it was. I fell in love with it straight away. It helps that grey and navy are my favourite colours.”

“However, I was conscious that I needed to ‘wedding it up’ – and I only had a few days to make the look work, so I booked a personal shopping session at Selfridges (it’s a free service) for three days before the wedding. Luckily for me I got Debbie styling me. She’s getting married herself in March – so she’d been doing her own wedding recce of the store for the past year. Debbie totally got the look I was imagining (wedding with an edge) and proceeded to storm round the store picking out killer heels (me: “but i can’t walk in those!” Debbie: “who cares? it’s your wedding – IT’S FASHION!”) and beautiful head pieces. She fixed me up with Christian Louboutin shoes (D: “all brides should tread on red darling!”) and a Cherry Chau head piece (mercifully in the sale…).  I’d love to see what she looks like on her wedding day – amazing I bet…Now all that remained was to take those six ivory wedding dresses back….”

The wedding took place in Oxford, and after a ceremony at Oxford Town Hall the wedding party headed to North Oxford Community Centre for their last minute reception! You see, Nat & Eve may have been together for more than six years but it they got engaged and married within a month!

Eve explained, “I’d been bugging him to propose for years – he didn’t see any immediate need. But then everything changed…In November Nat and I interviewed for jobs in Qatar, in the Middle East, but we weren’t really expecting to get them. Suddenly, on 19 December 2010 it was on – and on fast. They needed us to start in a month (our first day in our new office was 18 January) – and by the way, it’s illegal to live together in Qatar if you’re not married…So action stations – we had four weeks to end our jobs, get married and relocate to the Middle East. Add to that the fact that everything was closed for Christmas and New Year and you’ll see why our wedding was a ‘make do and mend’ affair – and all the better for it we reckon…”

Nathaniel didn’t actually officially propose until a week before the wedding too! “It occurred to me a few days before the wedding that the nature of the job offer and the necessity to get married meant that I’d never had a proposal”, said Eve. “I pointed this out to Nathaniel who immediately went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I cried – which seems ludicrous when you consider we’d already been organising the day for three weeks…”

However, Eve was sure that the last minute/throw it all together and see what happens nature of their wedding was what made it perfect – and perfect for them.

“I wanted the day to not just be a wedding, but a leaving party too. Most importantly I wanted it to be fun. I’m usually someone who’s really into the details, but I couldn’t be, I didn’t have time, and I think that’s what made it work.  Given a year to plan, I’m sure I’d have become obsessed with it, planning the minute details and watching as the costs rocketed. But as it was I knew I needed everyone to rally round and help, which seemed to make everyone feel more involved in the day. It wasn’t a case of Ii hope nothing goes wrong’  – it was so last minute that my ethos was ‘things will definitely go wrong – but let’s just make sure we enjoy it whatever happens’.”

“Nat and I sat down early and decided what we wouldn’t compromise on – what really mattered. We wanted people to party – there had to be plenty of food, plenty of drink and tons of dancing. For us – our priority was a laid back ceremony and photos of the day to treasure forever. So we invested in a great photographer, a delicious middle eastern themed buffet and a great live band. We made sure we had plenty of booze from Majestic – and the rest we didn’t worry about too much.”

Laura & Paul’s Vintage, Mismatched, Rock n Roll Bride-Inspired Wedding

September 7, 2010

I first laid eyes on Laura & Paul’s fabulous wedding when I saw a sneak peek on their photographer’s blog. Over the next few weeks I pretty much pestered their photographer Eliza Claire until she agreed to let me feature it – this is my favourite of all Eliza Claire‘s weddings to date!

Laura, a regular Rock n Roll Bride reader throughout their planning, was keen to add personal and alternative wedding touches throughout their day…and they certainly did that. It was also a lot down to Paul too, who really got stuck into the planning and the desire to create something unique.

“Paul was adamant from the start that he wanted our wedding to be personal to us,” Laura told me. “Your blog and Cosmopolitan Bride Magazine gave us the confidence that was hidden away to keep our wedding individual to us. There became a time when it spiralled and started to become ‘everyone else’s wedding’ but after the two of us sat down we got back on track and carried on with what we wanted. We didn’t want traditional bridesmaid dresses and were SO pleased with our choice. The girls looked stunning and so different to other bridesmaids we had seen at previous weddings.”

Laura had actually emailed me a few month’s back when she was having a bridesmaids dress crisis. I told her to not feel like she had to get a specific ‘bridesmaid dress’ for them and to go to the high street and buy them something beautiful. I’m ecstatic to say that she followed my advice and found these little beauties in New Look!

Mad Hatter Rock n Roll Bride ~ Candy Floss, Beach Huts & The Great British Seaside

July 6, 2010

It’s that time of immense excitement for me again, when I finally get to share with you a ‘lil project I’ve been busying myself with behind the scenes. Unbelievably this shoot has been in the pipeline for over a year but it’s only now that I’ve had the time to get it all organised properly!

The Photographer
I first met Eliza Claire just over a year ago at the very first ‘Rock n Roll Bride meet’. We met in a teeny cocktail bar in central London. We drank cosmopolitans and mojitos and talked way into the night about business, photography and changing the face of the UK wedding industry…and look how far we’ve come in only a year! At this first meeting we talked about doing a photo shoot together and would you believe it’s actually taken this long to get it together. However, as always, the wait was so worth it as within the past 12 months we’ve got to know so many more amazing people in the industry, a few of which we asked along to join in the fun.

Heart Shaped Candy,The British Seaside & Mad Hatter Hair – a ‘Lil Sneak Peek of the new Rock n Roll Bride Shoot

June 30, 2010

So I don’t usually post sneak peeks on the blog (I prefer to tease you on Twitter and Facebook!) but I am so in love with these that I just had to make sure that every single of of your saw them. I headed down to Whitstable beach yesterday with photographer Eliza Claire, Vintage planner and stylist Tiffany Grant-Riley and hair & make up artist Elbie Van Eeden. It really didn’t feel like work – it was just a girl’s day out in fact! And although I’m proper shattered (and quite sunburnt ooops!) the results are looking like they are aaall going to be worth it.

Wanna see a sneak peek then do ya?! Hold tight my lovelies, the full set and my report will be on it’s way to you as soon as physically possible! I’ll even tell you about the OAP blasting Barry White out of his scooter. I kid you not.

High Rocks

April 22, 2010

When I featured Nadia & Damien’s London engagement session back in January I just knew their wedding would be a beaut’ and these images sent over by the lovely Eliza Claire certainly haven’t disappointed.

The pair got married at The High Rocks Hotel in Tunbridge Wells which proved a pictureqesue venue with dramatic ‘high rocks’ outside. These acted as the perfect backdrop for some stunning portraits. Nadia looked every bit the glamorous bride in her Stephanie Allin dress which not only has a belt and lace over-lay but had pockets. Yes! stylish and quirky!

Mischievous

July 27, 2009

I was lucky enough to meet both Eliza (the photographer) and Ly(the model) who sent me this trash the dress session to me a while back on a now rather infamously drunk night out in London! I can safely say the fun and frolics you see below perfectly reflect their slightly mischievous personalities.

Tattoo Regrets, Laser Removal and Learning to Love my Ink Again

August 6, 2018

Lisa Jane Photography

I was just going to share this on Instagram, but then I realised not only did I have quite a lot to say, but that I hadn’t sat down and written a proper article about anything other that weddings for a while so this felt like the perfect opportunity. I’ve been getting tattooed since I was – I think – 16 (yeah, not my finest hour) so I’ve had my fair share of good and bad experiences! Tattoos and Rock n Roll Bride tend to go hand in hand, in fact publishing photos of beautiful tattooed brides was really how I started this blog, so I thought you might be interested to hear about my personal journey.

While I have quite a few tattoos, I’m going to focus on my sleeve in this post, mainly because it’s the one I get asked about the most, it’s the most recognisable and it’s the one I’ve been working on the longest!

I started it in 2010, when I was 26 (OMG these photos – haha!) Initially I was pretty happy with it (although after 18 hours of tattooing I was probably mostly just happy it was over!) but after a few months a lot of it really started to bother me. The red areas were too red (I really wanted them to be more pink) the girl’s face had no ink in it, so her skin was just my skin which made her look like a weird naked ghost, and the small cupcakes looked really amateur. I also wished it had more colours in it. I think it was a classic case of being a bit of a tattoo novice, being too nervous to speak up about what I really wanted (and didn’t want) and, in retrospect, not researching artists well enough. I don’t think the tattoo at this stage was in any way ‘bad’ but it didn’t turn out how I originally envisioned it.

In 2013 I decided I wanted to have it reworked. After doing a lot of internet research, and being met with many brick walls from tattooists who said they couldn’t  – or wouldn’t – help, I found Leah Moule. I visited her in Birmingham and we added some more colours and gems. She shaded in the girl’s face, changed the little hat from blue to teal and added my favourite part – the rainbow on my shoulder! I was so much happier!

How Often Should I Be Blogging?

Eliza Claire Photography

November 12, 2013

rocknrollbride whistable eliza claire4

Dear Kat
I’m in a quandary… I’m expecting my first baby in three weeks time and am obviously not going to have time to post on my blog as regularly in the coming months. My blog is a wedding blog and is fairly new (only launched five months ago) but it’s going really well and I want to keep the momentum going in the best way possible.

I have two questions. Firstly, if it’s not going to be updated for a while do I need to have a post explaining why, or can I just leave it standalone with the content as is? Obviously viewing figures are going to go down whilst I’m not updating regularly – there’s nothing I can do about that – but do I need to tell the world that I’m on a little maternity leave?

Secondly how often, as a minimum, do you think I should be aiming to post? Do readers genuinely expect updates or can they be happy with the content as is? I look forward to hearing any thoughts.

Well firstly, congratulations. It’s going to be a super exciting time for you. If you want to keep blogging you’re going to need to have a plan because I imagine you’re going to have your hands full!

A blog is like a baby in itself. It needs to be nurtured, to be given regular love and attention or it won’t continue to grow. So, yes, if you want to keep the blog going in some capacity, you need to be posting regularly. How often you post isn’t actually the most important thing, as long as you make the commitment to update at regular intervals. Most of all you need to find a schedule that works for you.

Remember, if you don’t blog, no-one is going to tell you off. You need to be accountable for whatever you decide to do otherwise it can be all too easy for it to fall to the wayside. You’ll wake up one day and think “Oh I’m too tired/ busy today, no-one will mind if I don’t blog” and you’re right, they won’t, but without the commitment to do it, one day will quickly turn into two… to a week… to a month… and soon enough you won’t have blogged for a year. You’ll have no readers left and you’ll basically have to start again from scratch.

A Quirky Alice in Wonderland Wedding: Nic & Ed

September 28, 2012

Nic & Ed chose Gaynes Park in Epping as the perfect spot for their June wedding. “It is the most amazing venue ever and their food is the highlight”, explained the bride, “In fact people are still raving about it now, it was better than any restaurant I’ve ever been to! It’s also a beautiful space, which didn’t need a lot doing to it which was perfect for us. I just put a few bits here and there to make it ‘ours’.”

“My inspiration came from my love of cakes and Alice in Wonderland. Ed was very happy to let me go off and try and put as much of ‘me’ into the wedding as I could. My aim was for people to know if was our wedding.”

“We made quite a bit ourselves including our table numbers which were numbers from hobbycraft which we decorated with glitter, fabric, sheets of music and pages from books. The table plan started life as a mirror. The name places were the hardest to make and took me nights and nights to get them all done. They were made from red foam, cut into a heart shape and decorated with red glitter. I used fimo to make a scroll and then painted people’s names onto them. I now see them in people’s houses when we go round!”

“We really weren’t worried about what people would think of the way we did things”, Jenny continued. “We had silly readings and came out of the ceremony to Beat Surrender by The Jam. Ed put his foot through my dress dancing down the aisle but we didn’t care as we had so much fun!”

To Blog or Not to Blog?

September 21, 2012

Blogging. If you’re in the wedding industry you’ll be hard pushed to avoid it. Still a relatively new medium, the first blogs (called web-logs back then) were launched in the late 90s. The wedding industry quickly adopted this format as their own with many wedding suppliers now using a personal blog to promote their work and to connect with others in the industry as well as potential clients. There are even people (like me!) who make a full time career out of blogging.

There are currently a reported 164 million blogs in existence, so how do you make yours stand out? Is blogging even right for yomu and your business? Two UK wedding photographers battle it out…

Sassy of Assassynation Photography doesn’t have a blog, preferring to use Facebook to preview her images to her clients and fans

Photography Credit: Lisa Jane Photography

Before I start I should say that I am in no way saying that it’s bad to have a blog, but it just isn’t for me right now. I have never ever had a blog and I can’t see me getting one any time soon. For me, I just can’t see how they will add value (not just workload) to my business. I know all the reasons that people give as to why I should have one (SEO, showcasing your personality, sharing your latest work etc) and I have basically been told that I am a total idiot for not having one. It is probably even more shocking for me to be of this opinion because in my previous life I was marketing manager!

Everyone seems to think I am breaking rule number one by not having my own blog. When I launched my photography business I wrote all the content on my site. I managed the whole thing myself, and being able to update my site as much as I like (I don’t have to go through a developer or anything) I am basically able to update it as much as I want. So instead of blogging, I constantly update my gallery with new weddings. For each of the weddings that I feature in my gallery my couples write a little bit about their day. I’m also very lucky that a lot of my work gets picked up by the big UK wedding blogs (thanks bloggers, I love you guys!) from my Facebook previews or when I submit weddings directly to them. These blogs have a much higher readership than any little blog I could write. I am not a writer, nor do I have any desire to be one. I want to tell my stories through imagery, not words, and having a blog would mean people would have to listen to me prattle on *yawn*.

An Eclectic, ‘Junk Shop’ Inspired Wedding: Penny & Martin

June 7, 2012

Being wedding photographers themselves, Penny & Martin wanted to have a wedding that was completely personal to them. With an intimate ceremony in the Scottish highlands and a quirky reception in a Brighton coffee shop, they achieve this in spades!

They had always wanted to get married outside and as this is currently still not legal in England they traveled all the way from Brighton to Scotland for their intimate (just the two of them!) ceremony at Kingairloch Highland Estate. “We wanted to be married somewhere beautiful, dramatic and remote – somewhere that was just ours!” Penny told me. “We got some recommendations from a friend who knows the highlands well, and fell in love with Kingairloch when we saw the photos. We hadn’t visited the estate beforehand, so we spent our first day at the cottage exploring its stunning surroundings, and found the perfect little spot for our ceremony.”

“We wanted to have an outdoor ceremony which isn’t legal in England. We had considered doing the legal bit in our jeans the day before putting on the main ceremony for our friends and family, perhaps in the woods, but we were uncomfortable with the idea of already being married. Scotland (and most of the rest of the world) is more relaxed on their marriage laws so we would be able to have a legally recognised, humanist ceremony wherever we liked… and well, the Scottish highlands are stunning! We were really concerned that our nerves would overpower all other emotions on the day if we were to stand up in front of an audience, so we made the decision to have our little ceremony all to ourselves.”

For the photographs they set up their own cameras to photograph the ceremony on a timer. “We just loved the idea of having our own little photo project and actually the photographs mean so much more knowing that we took them ourselves!” Penny continued. “Martin was super-clever in how he organised all the cameras on tripods hiding in every available patch of long grass, set to take photos every second during the ceremony and every few seconds during the ‘couple shots’! We have loads of pics of Martin running into the frame, bounding over rocks and streams!” They even shot a video (which neither of them had ever done before!) themselves which they then played to their guests at the reception. You can watch it here. “It was so wonderful to share the wedding video with our friends and family at the reception, watching their reactions- laughter and tears, all of which we would have missed had we been at the front worrying about getting our lines right!”

On returning to Brighton, the couple wanted a big party to celebrate with their friends and family. They chose the quirky Marwood Coffee Shop for its relaxed atmosphere. “We really didn’t want anything formal and we wanted it to be memorably quirky! The Marwood with their extensive collection of awesome tat combined with skip-dived furniture and peeling walls was perfect! Plus it isn’t actually a designated wedding venue so it was unique to us. Most importantly, they serve kick arse coffee and life changing cake!”

The venue didn’t need much decorating but the couple added a few DIY elements to personalise the space. These included paper flowers, a Choccywoccydoodah cake and twinkly light fabric garlands made from strips of reclaimed fabric (which they’d also brought to Scotland with them and tied it to a tree for their ceremony backdrop!)

“We also pegged little ‘wishes’ on ribbons tied to embroidery hoops and hung from the ceiling,” the bride explained. “On one side they read ‘It is usually customary for the guests to grant wishes for the bride and groom – we are turning that on it’s head! Pick a wish and keep it safe’ and the other had little wishes such as ‘find a pot of gold’, ‘find someone who makes your toes curl’ and ‘be visited by the stork’!”

Just like the venue, Penny wanted her wedding dress to be unique and to scream ‘her’. She found her perfect designer, Armour sans Anguish, on etsy. “I wanted something that was mine, a one off, designed for just me! I was gathering inspiration on etsy and toying with the idea of designing my own, when I came across the wonderfully talented Tawny from Armour sans Anguish who uses reclaimed fabric (girl after my own heart) to create one-of-a-kind garments to order. It was a bit of a risk ordering a dress for a designer in California without having any fittings or even seeing the colour of the fabrics in person (photos can be rather deceptive)! However it really paid off. A few tweaks from a local seamstress and it was just perfect!”

A Sunday Kind of Love – The Temple Gregory Party at The Savoy

March 11, 2012

with Eliza Claire, Eliza’s sister & Lucy Ledger

Last Wednesday I was lucky enough to be invited to a party hosted by wedding planners Temple Gregory at The Savoy, London. Holy posh venue batman!

I rocked up with Debs & Lucy in my Charlotte Balbier finest, my $5 Hot Topic Barbie necklace and my Janine Basil star headband.

with Alexis of OMG I’m Getting Married & Chanelle of Segerius Bruce Photography

It goes without saying really that the venue was freakin’ stunning. Located on The Strand, the hotel was first opened in 1889. After extensive renovations between December 2007 and October 2012, the hotel still boasts striking original features. The art deco vibe makes me go weak at the knees!

The party was held in the Lancaster Ballroom which I’m sure you’ll all agree is a little bit special huh? The pale blue walls worked perfectly with the pastel colour scheme of the party.

Oh yes…and a wedding industry party wouldn’t be complete without a photo booth would it?!

The fill gallery of photo booth snaps from the party can be seen here.

And of course some Instax action!

To Watermark or Not to Watermark, That is the Question…

March 2, 2012

Photography Credit: David McNeil Photography

Whether or not to watermark or add a credit line to images published online is always a touchy subject because everyone seems to have a very strong opinion on the matter (as I’ve learnt when researching this article!) It is an issue I have wanted to address for some time and finally feel that, after various discussions with bloggers and photographers alike, I am finally in a position where I am comfortable to open up this debate.

To lay my own opinion out from the beginning – as a blogger, I prefer to see and feature non-watermarked images. However tastefully integrated the watermark or logo may be, my opinion boils down to the fact that the image was not originally conceived with it included, and that therefore the whole concept is compromised by the addition. My job as a wedding blogger is to share inspirational weddings with future brides and to help the photographers I feature get bookings from these brides. In order for me to do both these jobs, I want the images I share to look their best.

This opinion was echoed by all of the wedding bloggers I chatted to. “We feel that watermarks distract from the overall look and feel of an image,” agree The Wedding Chicks, one of the largest wedding blogs in the US. “When we put a featured wedding together, we want all of the images to flow and look cohesive without having the distraction of watermarks.” However this is most definitely not a straightforward cut and dried issue, especially when you get into discussions about ownership, copyright and proper image use online. We work in a visual medium, and whilst I respect and understand an artist’s right to protect their work and their copyright, I am of the opinion that fundamentally images with watermarks are less attractive. I am a publisher, an editor of my own online magazine, and just as a print magazine would not publish images with watermarks on, so I have rejected images where the watermarks distract from the overall impact of the image.

Unlike traditional print media however, an online publication has the problem that the images it publishes can be copied, edited or re-published with just a few clicks of a mouse. There are therefore a large number of photographers who only allow their images to be featured online with watermarks or credit lines on them, especially those who have had their work stolen or misused in the past.

Photography Credit: Stuart Stevenson

Photographer Stuart Stevenson posted some of his images from a trip to London on his Flickr a few years ago. His work was well received and he gained a lot of praise and encouragement from the website community. However one day he discovered that some of his images had been downloaded, printed as postcards and were being sold at a tourist market in the city. “Seeing the image for sale made me sick” he told me. “To me it was a completely different ball game to having a shot re-blogged on tumblr or on someone else’s blog. It also really scared me, because my images were clearly able to be copied at 1024 pixels, and some people thought this was good enough to make prints. Also my portrait work is generally of my kids and the thought of those pictures being used anywhere else made me act quickly by downsizing everything by half, killing off the ability of users to see large views, and slapping on a watermark that takes up roughly one fifth of the image on them.”

Isn’t the photo at the top of this post beautiful? It’s one of my best friends, Katie, who got engaged at Christmas and is getting married in March (they’re doing it so quickly and it’s well exiting!) Photographer Lisa Jane came to Reading last week to do their engagement shoot and after seeing just this one frame on her blog I can’t wait for the rest!

I also asked Lisa if she could do some new headshots for me. I’m keeping most of them offline for now, but some of the outtakes were so funny I had to share them…

What a knobber…

In other news, this is the last Thursday Treats for a fortnight because I’m off to Vegas next week! Don’t worry my pretties, I promise to be back with a bumper edition on Thursday 1st March to make up for the absence.

I also want to give a little mention to my girls at Upper Street Shoes who featured me on their blog again this week. They asked me if I wanted to design some more shoes…well I couldn’t say no to that could I!?

So, what have you been loving this week? Why not share some of your favourite links in the comments below?
