Fee and Steve’s fabulously colourful, budget friendly wedding took place at Hemingford Abbots Village Hall in Cambridgeshire. “We wanted a fun day that we were both involved in”, Fee explained. “We didn’t wait it to just be about the bride, but both of us equally. Lots of colour was involved, and guests were requested to leave office attire at home! We both wanted to have a day that was about us, so we ensured that we included as much about us as possible. Early on in the planning we trawled wedding blogs, but mainly just looked at Rock n Roll Bride as we found that is was the only blog that included low budget weddings, and weddings that encompassed different themes.”

“We also made sure that we threw out any traditions that we weren’t sure on. We both wanted to embrace our feminist and humanist values, and only use traditions that we felt were appropriate to us.”

The bride wore a beautiful green dress from Honeypie Boutique. “My dress gets quite a few comments, with most people asking why I chose green, instead of white. This really encompassed the whole day for us though, as we chose the traditions that were applicable to us. Steve also gets lots of comments about how great his outfit was!”

The wedding budget was £5000. “The handmade element, from the veils to the flowers to the decor, was great to bring a laid back feeling to the day”, she continued. “Almost everything was homemade, apart from the catering. We even made our own wedding rings at Rachel Jeffrey after reading about it on Rock n Roll Bride!”

“I wish I’d known before we started planning how much work has to go into a DIY wedding. There was a lot of setting up and arranging. We wouldn’t have been able to do anything if it wasn’t for our incredible guests helping out. They helped flip the room between the ceremony, the wedding breakfast and the evening entertainment. They were amazing at helping pull the decorations down and packing stuff away. It felt like we were all packing down after a great party! Kudos also to my brother Dave who fantastically scaled a perilously high ladder to hang up the honeycomb paper balls!”

“The best thing about our wedding was that we had almost a blank canvas for a venue so we could make it our own, and that meant that we could choose our own suppliers. Also, spending the time with our humanist celebrant, Julia, was fantastic, and so meaningful and worthwhile for our relationship. Every guest said that it was the best fun that they had ever had a wedding which was the main aim of our day.”
